Well, I liked it as a gimic. The dirty mag is an RPG easter egg in Japan. There have been a few games where it has shown up, like Tales of Phatasia (weak weapon), Bahamut Lagoon (Dragons shouldn't eat porno...), FFV (Bartz searches books for a Playboy mag.. but can't find it) even later games like FF8 (Girl Next Door) used it. Not just Square RPGs either, a Japanese friend o' mine pointed out the scene in Disgaea where Volcanus finds a 'book' was most widly seen as a hint to the old Jap 'porno mag' easter egg custom, but western players were unlikely to get the gag. Other games released here most likely had the gag at some point, but any game before 98 most likely edited it out or 'replaced' it. Mya.. makes me sad. ;-;
Moderator Edit If some of the posts in this thread don't make sense, it was because people couldn't post on topic in the FF4 PornoMag thread and as such I split it to a new thread. Thanks. -R51 This post has been edited by Rangers51 on 21st April 2005 10:46 -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

Can't forget FFVI's good ol' "Book of Secrets" (aka "Porno Mag" in the Japanese version).
In regards to why everyone seems to want it, I agree that that tends to be a normal reaction when it comes to Easter eggs (I certainly wouldn't go after it if that meant seeing something risque. It'd most likely be aimed at males). Plus, I thought Cecil's reaction to it in this game was humorous. ![]() -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. The editing of dialogue has happened in many rpgs coming over to america
for example: in the origonal breath of fire there is an old man who'll pay nina to give him a "back rub" (you should be able to figure out what happened in the japanese version) which all that happens is the screen flashes pink and you'll see dialogue boxes go oooh.... aahhhh.... and afterwards the old man gives you money this just proves how perverted japanese game developers are This post has been edited by Cloud_Strife510 on 28th August 2004 18:12 -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

Just to add to your list of dirty, dirty things found abound in video games, though it ain't Square, BOF3 for PS1 contained, within Momo's tower, a vast library of things labeled, "Adult Material" and "XXX" and so forth. Then again, they weren't shy in that game, especialy when it came to Ryu being confronted by a very angry, and very naked Deis partway through the game.

After reading all this about references to dirty literature in RPGs, I now _so_ have to put a porno-mag into my game. eAlthoug|, there'll likely be a twist... Possisle spoilers: highlight to view maybe when the player usesqthe item, it does an automatic game over and the game c|astises the player for having a dirty mind. [insert mean smiley1here] Edit I feel like smacking some of these game developers for their dirty thoughts.

But it's uh, a bit off topic. >> Moderator Edit So true, so true. -R51 The humor in that game was priceless. The "which one of the girls would you rather do" convegsation, the "but there's only one bed" conversation, that bar scene with Arche's "drunken wet dream," and the absolutely priceless hot springs scene. I couldn't believe what I was watching u{fold; it seemed so randomly inserted inaan otherwise mostly-serious RPG, but I wouldn't have it anytother way.... Anu now, just so the post is on topic, I don't think there's ever been an RPG with pronography featured more prominently than in Shadow Hearts: Covenant. I donb9;t own the game, but it's high on my list of titles to find because it friggin' rocks. One of the playable characters is an old puppeteer named Gepetto (spelling could be wrong, there) whose weapons are dresses for his marionette. To ge5 these dresses, you need so search for male erotica (called "Stud Cards") and give itato a pair of french homosexual male dressmakers in Southampton. Priceless. |

Shadow Hearts: Convenant is a real mature game with some obvious sexual refrences, and the game got an easy Teen rating....but let's not forget the orginial Shadow Hearts, in which the main character Yuri tries to groupe the heroine Alice when she is passed out. Topple that with monsters that attack you with their.......things...and you got an awesome Mature rated RPG!

Not so much an item, but the Honey Bee Inn in FFVII. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what the $#%& room stands for. Wonder if that wasn't censored before it was released in North America.
Disgaea had a lot of "dirty" mentionables. Can't remember them off the top of my head, but I do recall one point where you're arguing about the angel having larger breasts. The porno mags in Bahamut Lagoon (that you can buy by the gross) has already been mentioned, but there's also a little "joke" in the game where it's all but bluntly spelled out for you when a couple of characters lose their virginity.
Also, the fact that at one point you come across some baby dragon poo and are given the option to eat it, which makes Byuu an official dragon keeper. ...Okaaay. Going by the name o' this spinoff topic, I'd definitely consider that pretty "dirty"...in the most literal way. And let us not forget about ol' man Sendak's rather odd obsession with Byuu (ex: "Byuu...your rear is so round..."). ![]() -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. On a side note, flat chested girls like you have absolutely no effect on me. Quote And let us not forget about ol' man Sendak's rather odd obsession with Byuu (ex: "Byuu...your rear is so round..."). Wild ARMs 3 has an optional boss that you can find in the Leyline Observatory. There's a bookshelf that, when you check it, it says "you must be 18 to read". If you get a Migrant Level of 18, you can go back and fight the boss, which really turns out to be a bunch of Adult Magazines. The books look like anime-style porn (I don't know if it has an actual name) and when the books attack you with spells, the pages flip around. The pictures on the inside are the same as on the cover, so there's nothing perverted about it, but it's still funny.

Yeah, Disgaea was pretty funny about some of its sexual humor.
There are a couple items in the game that are pretty funny. There is a monster weapon in the game called "Tentacles". The description on it is "Great for groping" or something with a little heart at the end, which of course alludes to tentacle hentai. I got a kick out of that. Another perverted point in the game is when, this little kid has used all of these different parts to make a super zombie. Parts like "Muscle of Hurcules" and some others I can't remember. And the kid makes a point of telling Laharl and company that he gave his super zombie a "Horse Weiner", which gets Laharl a little scared. At first he wasn't worried but after hearing that he considers the zombie a real threat. What makes it even funnier is during the fight with the zombie you can steal the parts it was made out of, including the "Horse Weiner". The description on it is "An item feared by even Laharl". Quote Laharl: I don't know why, but for some reason, women with sexy bodies cause me pain. On a side note, flat chested girls like you have absolutely no effect on me. I love Etna and Flonne's response to this. Etna & Flonne: Well, excuse us for being flat!!! Yeah, or how about what you first see Jennifer, and she's imagining all the "horrible" things that could happen if she met a demon. I'm not sure whether or not I should print it here, so I'll play it safe, but I'm sure you remember it, Rujuken

Couldn't you also acquire something in Bahamut Lagoon called "Gunzo's ???" where the guy would reach into his pants, scratch himself, and give that to you?

I think the fascination with dirty mags come from the way pornography is highly restricted in Japa. It's a kind of forbidden thing, and yet so casual simultaneously. I mean, just look at some hentai; those guys are so perverted since they don't get the releases we do.

Question: Is the Japanese public more of less perverted than the American public? And is the amount of such 'dirty' items related to the Japanese public being more perverted?

I think it's more that being "perverted" is more accepted as a natural part of (male) human development in Japan. If you look at more of their popular culture and especially at the way victims of sexual assault are treated, that theme really starts to come out. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Heck, even in Super Mario RPG you can get Princess Peach Toadstool's "XXX" (or was it "???", I forget) before her maid comes up and takes it from you and gives you a potion instead.
