I've just seen a demo of this game on my PS2, looks superb! But all I've read so far says it will be on the PSP,
![]() Keep in mind I'm from England, so if you people have seen it already, please be kind enough to use spoilers. Anyway, it's looking good, I hope to see a DVD release soon. ![]() I hope the plot is brilliant, like the game's was. I wonder who's in that wheel chair, hmm. I am almost positive it is going to get a DVD and PSP release, and I'm also fairly certain that this has been covered over and over. Check the CoN news posts from the summer of 2004.

Wait...
Quote (fatman) ...this game... Isn't Advent Children a movie? And yes, I've seen the trailer. Although Cloud kinda looks...different. Or maybe it's simply because of the FFVII game's original graphics. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. ..well, they usually have games on demos..
![]() erm, anyway, it is indeed a movie. And the topic may have been talked about almost a year ago but I thought as it is nearing release, this may spark up some conversation about it. And once it is out, this particular thread could be used to discuss the movie still. ![]() Who else has seen the advertisements for this? -------------------- 'Let that be a lesson to all oppressive vegetable sellers.' |

There was actually a 25-minute preview of this movie screened someplace (forgot where). The details of the preview can be found here. MAJOR SPOILERS, just in case you don't want to know about the plot.

Well 25 minutes may be a good portion, but unless you can understand what they're saying you wouldn't get that much out of it now would you?

There were quite a few screenings actually, one of which was held at the Film Festival here in Montreal. I shelled out the money last october to go see it, it was pretty damn intense. I won't spoil anything, because even though it wasn't 25 minutes (more like 15 minutes and then a 20 minute "the making of"), it still gave away a few nice details about certain characters. Mainly, a certain useless Ancient in the game, a certain silver-haired masamune wielding badass and a certain nutty proffessor. That's as much as I'll say.
I'm actually dying to see this movie, I've been waiting for it's release for quite some time now, I'm starting to feel like it'll never happen. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

It takes a lot longer to render 10 minutes of that stuff than it does to record the footage for ten minutes of a film, digitally alter the coloring, and then throw in some special effects if the scene required them or leave it without them if it didn't. Wasn't there also the possibility of a theatrical release? Maybe just in the little artsy theaters of big cities. That's a-ok with me.
Anyway, I think I'm going to be very disappointed. The movie (spoilers for Advent Children trailers!) Possible spoilers: highlight to view so far looks like a bad after-game fanfic. Oh dear. That's about it really. Just oh dear.
Well, I like a good plot, but I'll settle for a good action. Some movies pull off both (Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, The Matrix -first one-, etc...) and others fall woefully short on plot but are still entertaining enough (Chronicles of Riddick, Terminator 3, Resident Evil) and others just don't need action. This unfotunatley looks like bad action. "Bad Action" : Any movie where the action and/or violence either has no point, a very bad reason, or just plain stinks. Such occurences include swordfights in my definition, if done daftly or badly. "I like swords, but guns are better." Logic aside, the plot here just sounds a tad lame. Like L. Cully says, Possible spoilers: highlight to view Bad after-game fanfic. As in really bad. It actually vindicates my ideas! On that subject, this expansion is also quite annoying to some extent. It means we don't have the freedom to think in terms of 'what happens next?' as we're going to be told that. We can't actually make up our own version of evens without going all DC comics and having Gaia-One, Gaia-Two, Earth-Forty Bajillion, Earth-forgoodnesssake... In short, it's not going to expand much , and it probably won't be good IMO, and may in fact STUNT FF7. It's regarded by some as 'best thin evar' though, so Squenix will get the money they want, even as the plot-folks wail in anguish at the awful film, and the people who won't mind actual action like me swear loudly at those damned swords. -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

For those of you who've seen it, remember Pokemon: the First Movie? The movie itself (not including the Pikachu's Vacation 'extra') was about 70 minutes long, and I was disappointed that it felt rather short. (Maybe they were too used to making 25-minute episodes...) However, Advent Children isn't an entire story itself--it's an extension to the plot of FFVII; come to think of it, though, Mewtwo Strikes Back is also merely an episode in Ash's journeys...so...I guess it makes sense. But given the shortness, it might be a good idea that Square isn't marketing it in theaters, so as to decrease the risk of losing money. (But that might just be motivated by their experience with The Spirits Within...) (Now just watch xzidane22222 flame me over this...) Quote (Squall of SeeD) 70 minutes of CG cinema at that level of rendering detail It really does take a lot of work. I'm talking quantity, not quality, here. Sure, it might look dazzling, but if I'm only looking for an hour plus change, it better be the best damn 70 minutes I ever seen to make up. And if the naysayers are right, it probably won't be.
Call me pessimistic, but I don't think they can equal or top FFVII. Lightning usually doesn't strike twice. Just look at the Matrix sequals. -------------------- |

From what I've seen so far, AC is basically a bad fanfic brought to life. Bring back a few fan-favorites, toss in new characters for the sake of reaching for new material, and of course, have Sephiroth take part in things by looking badass and stuff (lol cuz sephy si teh so coooool!!!!!
![]() ![]() ![]() With 70 minutes to spare, they'll barely have time to expand on FF7's loose ends. Possible spoilers: highlight to view What happens at the end of the game? It seems like either the human race is brought to extinction by Holy, or something really special happens, but there has been way too much speculation and debating to just randomly go on without explaining anything. What about Sephiroth? They CAN'T bring him back: the ending showed his spirit being destroyed in the lifestream. How are they going to explain that? What about Midgar, shown in ruins in the future and arguably destroyed by Holy: has it just been rebuilt in a few years? Rufus is also in AC, yet he was caught in an explosion and killed by a head-on hit from a Weapon. Even if he somehow survived, a serious deal of explaining would be required for THAT. Considering Square has been producing very highly detailled games that last 70+ hours, a movie that lasts 70+ minutes will have to be damned good... -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Possible spoilers: highlight to view I was never one of the folks that thought that Holy wiped out Homo Sapiens. That Red XIII was still around suggested this to me. He's not a Homo Sapien, but he was riding in a ship being flown by some, and unless he suddenly gained Homo Sapien-like appendages on his paws, flying and landing that thing himself would have proven to be quite an adventure. Quote (Silverlance) Possible spoilers: highlight to view What about Sephiroth? They CAN'T bring him back: the ending showed his spirit being destroyed in the lifestream. How are they going to explain that? Possible spoilers: highlight to view If they're at all employing logic, they'll just have it be JENOVA's head in his form, as parts of JENOVA were in his form during the game. The fact that JENOVA's head is said to be in the film and that the box that Kadaj looked in which was supposed to contain its head was ripped open and he screamed -- implying to me that the head isn't in the box -- suggests to me that they're going that route. Quote (Silverlance) Possible spoilers: highlight to view What about Midgar, shown in ruins in the future and arguably destroyed by Holy: has it just been rebuilt in a few years? Possible spoilers: highlight to view In all fairness, we don't know the full extent of the damage that Meteor rendered unto Midgar. If it has been rebuilt to an extent, and then gets abandoned after a few years, in another 498, that would still allow things to work out just fine chronologically. In all honesty, I think Midgar will be abandoned. The film is obviously placing an emphasis on the importance of the children, the previous generations having made a lot of mistakes that these children can learn from. Perhaps with them the lost ways of the Cetra will be re-embraced and humanity will once again treat nature with respect and abandon their technological behemoth to be taken back by the Planet. Quote (Silverlance) Possible spoilers: highlight to view Rufus is also in AC, yet he was caught in an explosion and killed by a head-on hit from a Weapon. Even if he somehow survived, a serious deal of explaining would be required for THAT. Possible spoilers: highlight to view It wasn't a head-on hit, though. Diamond's energy blasts entered Rufus' office and exploded across from him. True, he was engulfed in the explosion, but it's not as though they have him in Advent Children without a scrape from the matter. He's wheelchair-bound and missing his left arm, and possibly suffered some serious burns on his head (which would explain why he keeps the top of it covered). Quote (Silverlance) Considering Square has been producing very highly detailled games that last 70+ hours, a movie that lasts 70+ minutes will have to be damned good... In this regard I agree completely. A lot of folks feel that their previous film would suggest that they're not up to the challenge, but I don't believe this to be the case. Yes, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was lacking the level of characterization and viewer-attachment to the characters that players of the games would develop over several dozens of hours, not only through the cutscenes, but through battles, as well, but Advent Children won't have to worry about introducing characters (except for Loz, Yazoo, and Kadaj) for the character to get to know and become attached to. They already will have done so from having played the game. 70% of the work is already done for them in that regard. All they have to do at this point is spin a relevant story that feels like a logical -- or at least plausible -- progression of the game, uphold storyline integrity by not producing plotholes through the contradiction of anything in the game or the omission of something relevant that had been in the game, and they should be set. Granted, the question remains "Can they do that?" Considering the level of inconsistency in Final Fantasy X and X-2's plots ( Possible spoilers: highlight to view ), we may have cause for worry. why are the Aeons back? Sendings: Where did they go? The open-ended nature of FFVII's plot was always one of my favorite things about the game.
Possible spoilers: highlight to view Like SoS, I never took the ending to mean that the human race had been wiped out. You do hear children laughing at the end. Still, I understood it when people said that laughing was supposed to be the "ghosts" of human children, happy in having abandoned the world or something like that. That's what I loved about the game, the debatable points. Now we're going to have answers. That might appeal to some people, I can't say I'm too thrilled about it. This is like an "official" explanation, and after seeing the movie it's hard to ignore any plot points and say "well, I like my way better." You can do that, but now there's a stamp of approval on an alternative explanation. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to see AC. I hope that I'll even like it. But I think too many sequels focusing on one story line can dillute a good story and turn it into something sub-par. I think of what happened with each succesive Planet of the Apes sequel. |

Well, even if it's terrible, I'm probably still going to like it as a film, if not a sequel to a videogame epic. I don't think they would be able to make a good sequal without many many hours of film, or turning it into a TV series. Plus, the ending of FFVII didn't really make it easy to pick up the strings and run with it again.
But despite all that, I'm 90% certain I'll be disappointed. -------------------- |

Official Website For "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children"
I actually just played through FF7 again after 7 or so years since I first played it. Figured I'd go see what Square is workin on and much to my surprise I see a remake of FF7 and a sequel... So has anyone checked this out yet? Not too sure if I like some of the character models they don't exactly match up with the originals, but close. But to make a sequel to, in my opinion, the best Final Fantasy game ever they're really taking a risk. That's one tough act to follow. Hope they don't screw it up. They show every playable character (including Aeris) except Cait Sith in the trailer; even though they don't list Red XIII(Nanaki) in the character section. So what do others think about this? I'm not sure if it's a good idea or bad idea. Edit: I'm also wondering what platforms it will be on. This post has been edited by Zellidon on 25th June 2005 10:26 |
