I think adding a Debate section to the forums would be kinda neat. I know I am new on here, but there are some really interesting issues I'd like to talk about. I don't know about anyone else. Just a thought.

I hate debating or arguing of any kind, but I don't really see a need to, IMO. If there's a topic somebody wants to talk about, there's GT and then a whole bunch of other forums they can debate in already...

While this is a good idea in theory, in practise debates can turn into a mud-slinging match alarmingly fast.

We are open to starting debates on certain topics, in the General Topics section, provided they stay as debates and aren't offensive (we obviously wouldn't allow topics like "Do gay people have rights?" or "Should women be the sole caretakers of babies?" or "Does God exist?" that are or suggest sexist/homophobic/racist/intolerant attitudes. Religious debates in particular get ugly after, roughly, the second post.)

If you have a topic and want to know if you think it's okay before posting the debate, feel free to PM a moderator for an opinion.

Sounds like a pretty sweet idea.

A lot of topics worthy of such a board have crept up (for instance, the Schiavo situation...) Many have remained on-track and flame-free. And if someone starts causing serious problems, it would've only been a matter of time either way. Maturity is not restricted to serious topics; these only make a lack thereof more obvious.

Could be interesting if kept clean; a trial run would at least show if a more serious section on the boards would survive without people feeling a need to troll or flame. Though if that's a no-go, there's always general discussion... smile.gif

We're not making a new board for this, people, it goes in General Topics.
