Tekken 4 is of questionable value, but Tekken 5 is definitely a good buy. It's got a lot of cool features, interesting characters, and all of the solid gameplay that made Tekken 3/Tag so great. If you only buy one, go for Tekken 5.

I preferred Tekken Tag Tournament to 4 by a lot, and I admittedly haven't played 5 (which is supposedly awesome). If you want Tekken action, you can find Tag for less than $10 nowadays (I got it for between 10 and 15 around a year ago or so), but 5 is a better value, with more characters, unbelievable visuals, and the fact that it contains ports of Tekken 1, 2, and 3 (3 is my favorite in the series!). So bottom line, if you want a better game, get 5; if you want a game with more bang for your buck, get Tag. Avoid Tekken 4, its battle system had some new additions that did more harm then help.

I like 2 and 3 because of all these characters that you unlock from beating the game w/ special characters, Panda/Kuma, Kunimitsu, Roger, etc. Oh, I can't forget about Alex and Gon! Coolest dinos in a video game!

I was going to make a brand new Tekken 5 topic, but I figure this one is as good as any. I've just recently really started to get into the game, and I like what I see. It's no secret that I've been something of a dabbler in the Tekken series, as even the excellence of 3/Tag was unable to pull me completely from my undying love for 2-D fighters. But Tekken 5 is a game that I find myself truly enjoying.
This game is a true anomaly amongst (good) tournament fighters in that the tiers really don't matter all that much. Steve's safety, Nina's oki game, and Feng's punishing reach are all great, for sure - but if recent tournaments at home and abroad are any indication, there is a truly massive blur between top and middle tiers in Tekken 5. This is a refreshing change of pace from Tekken 4, which was basically everyone trying with their favorite characters and then realizing that Jin was better than all of them combined. Of course, the tiers may become more and more defined as time goes on. I'm going to try my luck with Hwoarang, who seems to have a lot of fun options with his stances now, and an ever-increasing arsenal of killer combos courtesy of innovative Korean players. I was thinking 'bout renting Tekken 5 and trying it out. Admittedly, I haven't really gotten into a Tekken game since 2 (my favorite of the series), but that was also one of the last fighting games I played over 'n' over at the arcade several summers ago...before it closed down. There's just something missing when playing these games at home; probably why I don't play a lotta fighting games anymore.
Tekken 4's definitely one to avoid, in my book. It was kinda a sour experience, and I really didn't expect 5 to be much better. If it's indeed as awesome as you say then maybe I'll give it a look. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway. 5 is what 4 should have been: I solid improvement to 3/TTT. The action is faster, the characters have new moves, the fighting arenas are graphically stunning (especially the one where you're in the moon-lit field) and the arenas have walls that you can pin opponents to. But if you can do without these extras, the game is not a whole lot different than Tekken 3 and Tag Tournament. Its the same formula with a lot of shine and polish.

I shall go all Tekken now...
Tekken I got with my PS, as one of the first 3D games (game number 00005) around it was kinda' dull, but the story showed promise. Tekken 2 I got a very short time later, it totally out did the first all over even with its block-ish graphics. By now the story had really unfolded and some of the endings were class (Kazuya got the 'best' ending in 2) Tekken 3 was and is my fave Tekken of all time. The gameplay was fast, the moves were perfect, the music was cool, and dear GOD the FMVs were breath taking. T3 had the best opening of any fighting game 'ever'. Tekken Tag Tournament was nice...it wasn't a big change from 3, but the character line up was greater and the tag thing was fun. However I missed the story (note, TTT is not in anyway part of the story, even bring back dead characters) and also the endings although Unknown 'did' get a really cool ending. Tekken 4...well...as a game it's okay, but compared to Tekken 3? Less characters, 'much' slower, and boring endings. The only thing better than 3 was the in game graphics, but that hardly matters to me...It does have Steve however, who I really like using. (I trash people with the duck, weave, punch!, weave, grab) Tekken 5...isn't released in the UK for another 80 something days =P I'll let you know then. ~Tekken fan -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |
