In the silver edition of Pokemon I had got all 251 Pokemon's, guess what happened then... right, my Savestate were erased, I don't know why, I didn't smash on it or anything like that...
It was damn hard to get all 251 Pokemon's and then my Masterpiece of a Savestate was killed ;__;

Yeah, I'm reviving dead topics now. Aren't I cute? tongue.gif

First of all Glenn, if you still care about your Blue save file, I had a copy of pokemon red that lost a file several times. I was able to recover the data that was lost with the ancient tradition of blowing the cartridge. I had to blow the cart more thoroughly then normal though. It worked about seven times for me.

And now, less fodder and more topic. As you all probably know by now, my favorite console is the SNES. A humble system that most here are probably familliar with, seeing as this site was founded on the basis of an SNES game. However, despite everything that I love with it there's one fatal flaw. STUPID LOST SAVE FILES! To extrapolate upon the problem, the save files are saved in the cartridges that you play the game on and the cartridges are quite big. They stick out of the top of the system and you can see that good two thirds of the cart while you're playing. Also, he only grip the SNES has to a game is the part it reads data from. Unfortuanatly, this all leads to one problem. Even just the slightest bump to the game cartridge can end up erasing some or all of your save files for that game if you have your SNES on. Now let us see how many games I've had to play through multiple times, only for this reason:

Kirby Super Star: 3 times
Super Mario World: 5 times
Final Fantasy VI: 3 times (Two of those are thanks to my cat)
Super Mario Kart: 4 times (Do you know how hard the 150 cc Special Cup is?}
Super Mario RPG: 2 times
Yoshi's Island: 1 time
Super Mario All Stars: 2 times (All four games though, that sucked)
Final Fantasy IV: 2 or 3 times (I can't remember)

There are more but those are the only ones I specificly remember at this moment in time. Also, that list doesn't count the first save file I had. That means when I say I had to play SMW 5 times because of this, I mean 5 times in addition to the original file that got erased. I rarely ever erase save files myself when I finally beat a game. On the bright side though I'd have never have found Shadow if it weren't for my cat. That doesn't off set my dislike of losing my save file but it's a silver lining, kinda. Basicly, that's my bad gaming experiance. It might not be a specific one like everybody else was listing but still, it's a bad gaming related experiance.

There, I'm done. I feel much better now that I have all of that off of my chest. Not that I was ever guilty of anything in the first place. Really . . . eh.gif

Wow, guys, just.....wow. I'm sure I've had a few, but for the life of me I can't remember any of 'em...and they'd be nothing to compared to other peoples.

The most recent one was, I was playing FF5 and spent about an hour or so leveling up and I fought the boss at one of the meteors in the 1st world...all those bombs...and I ended with Faris the only person standing, fighting in vain. Needless to say, I got creamed. I hadn't saved, either.

And BTW, Legend of Dragoon is a bad gaming experience, period.

Evidently, some games battery save capabilities COMPLETELY die out if you mess up the cartridge somehow. Once I was playing my first save of Harmony of Dissonance, I had about a 140% castle map (that's out of 200%, mind you), I paused and put my SP on the coffee table to get a drink. When I come back with my iced tea, my dog is jumping all around me, probably hungry or something. Well, my dog's tail is exactly coffee table-level, so she knocked my SP across the room and the game falls out upon contact with the ground. I rush over to see what happened, and the screen is still at the menu, but it's making all kinds of strange notes. Panicked, I put the cartridge back in (before turning it off; HUGE mistake!) and press buttons to no avail. I then turn the SP off and on and notice that my game has been erased. That got me upset, but I didn't get angry until I realized that the cartridge would never save a game again. I could play it and try and save, but if I used a hard reset the save would be erased. Since Harmony is sort of a hard game to find, Gamespot paid fifteen bucks for it, the suckers. I found it online later for around ten bucks.

Most of my personal experiences have to do with saved or overwritten data. You've all covered that, so I'd like to relate a story that has nothing to do with me.

I didn't actually even see this event. There was a Smash Bros. Melee tourny at my school that I CAN'T BELIEVE I missed. My friend was there, however, and he told me about this incredible battle he witnessed.

It was Kirby vs. Donkey Kong during a 5 man KO round. Kirby had obliterated Donkey Kong and was up 5 lives to 1. Then, DK staged a comeback. He obliterated Kirby and had him up against the ropes, finally getting it down to 2 lives to 1, with Kirby on a higher percentage.

It looked like it was all DK, all the way. Until, that is, Kirby pulled off the ultimate desperation move. He swallowed DK and jumped off the stage. The move took both of their lives, but since Kirby had 1 left, he won. I heard the kid playing as DK was so POed he stormed off ala Pink_Nu during Bball. Supposedly the entire auditorium was in an uproar, with cries of "cheap," "so awesome," and just laughter dominating the hall.

Most of mine are of the minor "power outage" variety. The power here likes to go off all the damn time, usually coming back on immediately afterwards. Thing is, I'm one of those idiots who just doesn't save until we're ready to turn off the game. It's not because we're so wrapped up in it, it's just that we treat premature saving as breaking some unwritten rule (those're really the only words I can give it). There are dozens of times where I've gone 3+ hours in one sitting just to be thwarted like that. I call us "idiots" because sooner or later we'll regret having that save point habit but never actually learn from it.

My WORST experience goes back some several years to one day when I was playing Castlevania on the NES. At that time we had a little, less than 12'' TV in the kitchen with the system on top of it all sittin' on a not-too-stable stand jammed right up against a window. This was in summer, too, so that window was open. If you can tell where this is going, then good for you! Anyways, I was up against Frankenstein and Igor when I, for some unfathomable reason, managed to kick the television stand slightly. It swayed a bit -- not enough for me to really care -- until one of the back legs folded, yes FOLDED, under it. Well, the rest was just kinda a blur, but what happened was the stand fell over backwards sending the TV and NES flying out the window. What's worse is the impact somehow dislodged the game and ended up getting it caked in mud. No, actually the worst part is that it was a rental and my mom had to pay full price for it. Luckily, though, the TV and NES only suffered a few scratches and had to be cleaned up a bit (I suppose the puddle of mud cushioned their fall dry.gif ), but from that day on they both found a more reasonable place in the house to sit and entertain.

First Experience: Let a "friend" borrow my playstation and I would borrow his N64 (cause I'm addicted to Smash Brothers). Well, when we decided to switch back, I throw Chrono Cross into the playstation. Hit power, and I hear this awful stratching sound like the disk wasn't in properly. Game messes up, I turn the power off, open the lid and practically lose it. My friend broke my playstation. The little silver balls that hold the game in place and that black thing holding the silver balls in place broke off. Chrono Cross, doesn't work any more and I was without my playstation for about 6 months until I got PS2.

Second: Transfering save data from a PS1 memory card to a PS2 one. Thought I had another copy of brother's 200+ hour Dragon Warrior VII file already on the PS2 memory card. Nope.

Third: Diablo II, this game has made me realize people can be just, pardon my language, complete assholes. I join this game and the guy says he'll give me this alright item if I do one little thing for him. I had to go to this site, download something and it would give this guy a point or something like that in this contest. At that time, this was shortly after getting the internet and was unaware of the kind of crap out there. Anyway, I download the thing, run it. Next thing I know, my character is dropping all of his equipment and there was nothing I could do to stop it. Literally hundreds of hours poured into this character just to have some little punk cheat me out of it. This naturally became my muse for writing an article for a site though which has gotten me some minor attention within the realms of the game. Nonetheless, the entire game was ruined for me forever.

Final Fantasy Tactics.... the Game That Breaks Your Heart.

I once spent over 6 hours playing this game off and on one fine summer day that I should have been outside. I got through all of Chapter One, Chapter Two, and was just getting into Chapter Three, where I planned on doing some power leveling for a bit.

During the course of the game, I was switching jobs for everyone after they mastered them..... this was to be my first game with all classes mastered for every character.

Long story short, I had a team of three archers and two thieves when I ran into a nest of bull demons and skeletons at Zeklaus Desert. Wiped me out. And no, I had not saved at all.

I learned a valuable lesson that day.... and all you FFT'ers out there take heed.... If you are mastering all classes, never, EVER take more than two people out of a strong class at a time to master weaker ones. Bleache. pinch.gif

Not sure if this counts as a gaming related expierence... But it's close

I basically had high lev.s on every char in FF7 & 9, had a completed file on Metal Gear (Solid) as well as a few other files like that. Unfortunatly, I was carrying my memory card around to long, I guess since it was so hot out it got fried in my pocket or something.... The playstation wouldn't recognize it so bye bye saved files.... Man, that SUCKED!

Come to think of it, maybe it was the larege dent it had on the top....

There's been a few, but back in the early days of my gaming habit, I played Crash Bandicoot: Warped for about four hours without saving. I got into the final section, and...

Powercut.

Hmm... Most recently was in Ace Combat 5. I was playing through it for my second time, on Ace difficulty, and decided to just tool around in a free flight for a bit. What I forgot was that when you do a free flight, it sets your campaign back to the first mission on Normal and I went and saved when I was on the third last mission. Needless to say, I cursed profusely. But, in two days, I caught up and then beat the game again on the third, so it wasn't a terrible travesty, just a slight setback.

However, what DID really frustrate me was my old PS memory card. I was playing FFVII for the first time, was about 30 hrs in nearing the end and went to bed satisfied. The next day, when I went to open the save I got this lovely "Unable to load - file corrupted" and pretty much wanted to kill... So I had to go get myself another memory card (got one of those big three pager ones which I've had since) and started again. I was an extremely unhappy camper...

But I finally beat it after being Supernova'd three times by Safer. That bastard...

Mine was very very saddening.

Back a while ago on my PSX, I was bent on finally completing FF7 for my first time through. Everyone was trained up, and I was ready to go. It took ages walking in that Crater without a walkthrough, but I did it. I didn't see any saves, so the only time I saved was outside the Crater. I finally got to Sephiroth, and beat the easy Bizzaro Sephiroth.

I paused, went down to get some lunch and came back up with it to eat while killin' that rat bastard. Then what happens? My dog excitedly jumps on the bed to eat my sandwich WHILE I'M HOLDING MY COKE. I was in the middle of fighting Angel Sephiroth, and coke splays all over the PSX - note I was drinking out of the 2 litre coke bottles you get. Completely destroyed it. All I could savour was the memory card, but everything else - game included, was gone...

Luckily I got the game and PSX replaced sometime later.

Same thing happened to me... only no coke beverages were spilled in my blunderous mistake. I saved over mine with a new game dry.gif

In FFX, I was in Mt. Gagazet training everyone for a while, trying to wait until I had at least 4 Sphere movements and then I was fighting some Ragoras and they used Seed Burst on Auron and Wakka, my two main attackers, and they killed Yuna and each other.... I had played for an hour or so training.

Also, in Kingdom Hearts, I was in Olympus Coliseum doing Hades Cup in time limit mode. I beat everyone up to Rock Titan and I had like 3 minutes left. I thought you could start over from another place like 20 or 10, but no. I restarted, knowing I couldn't beat that piece of rock in 3 minutes. Then I realized that you can't go forward in Hades Cup time limit. So I turned off the PS2. Then, I realized that I hadn't saved in like 2 hours and I had beaten Ice Titan, Sephiroth and Kurt Zisa in that time... mad.gif

Supposedly the entire auditorium was in an uproar, with cries of "cheap," "so awesome," and just laughter dominating the hall.

For some reason, I found that oddly amusing, since I do that all the time when I play the game.

Anyway:

Experience #1: It was Christmas, and I just got Final Fantasy IX, and planned staying up all night to play the hell out of the game. I got to where you first meet Regal Cid, and I saved my game and turned it off to enjoy a break for about 10 minutes. Anyway, when I went to play it again, the game said my file was corrupted. Well, no worries (I was weak anyway). So I started a new game, and when I got to the part where you run around as Steiner, I just passed out. This led to the game being on for a total of about..say...13 hours (yes, I slept 13 hours). Needless to say, the first disc of my copy of IX was kind of messed up due to the fact I left it running for about...well....18 hours total. (No including the break)

Experience #2: Just a couple of weeks ago, I wanted to recreate my childhood memories of classic Super Nintendo games. So instead of searching for them at my local EB Games, I said "Screw it!" and downloaded ROMS of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Earthbound, Lufia 2, and Super Mario RPG. I blew through most of the games with ease, picking up all the secrets that I missed when I first played the games when I was 10. Anyway, I shut off my computer for the night and go to bed. Next morning, I wake up and my computer is all messed up. I had to delete everything on it and reboot the whole system....ugh....

Experience #3: When I got killed by this cheerleader who was playing Halo 2 at my friend's house. She ran up behind me and bashed me in the head with the shotgun. That was her only kill, too...I'm so ashamed of myself.

How about this for a mild one: I was playing FFVIII and trying to get all of the cards... but I'd managed to spread the "random" rule in every damn town. The inability to pick my own cards frustrated me to no end... I had most of the high level ones, but the random would pick stuff like cactuar, and I'd get wiped out by Irvine and Selphie cards. I went through three controllers (flinging against walls) before I finally got them all. In victory, I decide to play a game against someone and dominate... Then I lost ALL NINE CHARACTER cards to some shmuck with nothing better than a bug. Without saving. That particular fit of rage cost me disk3, another controller, a coffee table, and a girlfriend.

Another one: a buddy of mine "constructed" a gex drive out of the parts of an old PSX, and swore that it could upload ps1 and ps2 card files to the pc. So, I try it with an old card, nothing too important on there (a few MGS files, a few duplicates of stuff I have on other cards, etc). It uploads fine... but something happened that neither of us noticed: it was moving the files, not copying them (thus, the files were on the PC and NOT on the memory card). So, we get through 2 other memory cards when my good one will not work. This is a double card (push the button and another 15 slots appear), and has all of my best files (all of my duplicates were already on the PC). It will not read. Eventually, while playing with it, my buddy manages to wipe the card without moving the files. I nearly flip out, but hereassures me that most of those files had duplicates, so I relax. You know, everything is on his PC, and it's safe. He was going to e-mail them to me after I went home.... then his hard disk failed. Save files for every FF on PS or PS2, ChronoTrigger and Cross, MGS, MGS2 (will EVERY dogtag), a few shooting games, Castlevania: SotN at 225%, Legend of Legia (that game takes forever and is boring), and several others. 30 games, all of which are at least 50-125 hours each, all gone. The last five years of gaming are all gone.
That fit of rage cost me my fiancee. Almost.
