This are (at the moment) my favorite RPG's. Which are yours?
1. Ys III - Wanderers from Ys (Falcom, MSX 2) Because of the atmosphere, smooth gameplay, and the music. If you've only seen the SNES-version, take a look at the original! 2. Final Fantasy VI (Square, SNES) There is just nothing remotely bad about this game. 3. Xak - The Art of Visual Stage (Microcabin/Square, MSX 2) This game must have the best game music I've ever heard. The game itself is good too, well thought-out realtime battles. 4. SD Snatcher (Konami, MSX 2) The story is so different, the music is very cool j-funk/synth stuff, and the Bladerunner-like atmosphere is wonderful. 5. Breath of Fire II (Capcom, SNES) Like the atmosphere, the characters and the way you can upgrade/merge them. Hope I've posted this in the right section, btw... ![]() -------------------- |

You know... I'm sure this was a topic before.... But, whatever ^-^ I'm probably wrong.
Moderator Edit I did manage to find a favorite RPG topic, but it also included a "non-RPG" list. Since there's a live favorite game topic too, might as well let this one live. ![]() FFVI - Square (Snes) Great storyline and characters, the story was near flawless (in my opinion) and the game rarely got boring. My favorite FF game. Breath of Fire II - Capcom (Snes) Didn't care for the merge system, but the outstanding battle/boss/etc music made up for it. My only other complaint was there was to many spellcaster-type characters. (Jean, Nina, Bleu, Bow/Rand (Healers) Sten) It was really difficult leveling EVERYONE up. FFVII - Square (PSX) First 3d-ish FF game, and really well done. Basically I've done everything in this game, save for beating both Emerald/Ruby Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars - Square/Nintendo (Snes) A good game, turned away from the 'side-scroller' thing the Mario games had going. Introduced two new characters (Playable) onto the scene as well as several NPC characters. Also allowed you to control memorable Mario-ish characters. (You hafta admit though, by now Luigi has got to be getting pissed off, having been left outta both this and Mario 64, as well as other Mario games o.o) That's all I can think of, at the moment. I'll add more later. This post has been edited by Rangers51 on 22nd March 2005 16:18 -------------------- Link: "What is it?" Mario: "It's coin, what the hell does it look like?" Link: "Well.... Top 5 eh? Okay, I'll go with that.
Tends to change a lot. =P 1. Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (Koei, PS2) Koei's best RPG to date tops my chart. Its gameplay and lighthearted humour far out-do the later Phantom Brave. I can never get enough of this game. 2. Final Fantasy VII (Square, PS) The RPG I have played all the way through more than any other, and aldo my first ever real RPG. From music to characters it's (almost) flawless to me. 3. Tales of Phantasia (Namco, SNES) A great soundtrack, story, and graphically stunning, ToP was the lesser known father to the well known Star Ocean series. 4. Chrono Trigger (Square, SNES/PS) A famous game among true RPGers everywhere, need I even explain why it's so good? 5. Live-a-Live (Square, SNES) A vastly underrated game only known to hardcore RPG fans who hunt rare RPGs. Its a nice slice of fiction with humour to have you laughing out loud and a soundtrack that can often be kick-ass. Whaa, 5 already?? I have no room for BoFII, Star Ocean 3, Super Mario RPG, FF Tactics, FFVI, FFIII, or Bahamut Lagoon which are interchangable with the above depending on my mood. Hmm now that's a toughie...
La Pucelle Tactics (even though I beat it once) Super Mario RPG FF6 FF7 Legend of Dragoon If my emulator wasn't so damn "perfect" I'd have been able to beat Chrono Trigger BoF2 was just too damn frustrating for me, even though I merged my characters with Shamans, leveled up and get their strongest weapons I still couldn't beat DeathEvan -------------------- |

Interesting entries.
![]() It appears there's a lot of games which I don't know, but should. I thought Koei only made strategy games, for instance. The Namco RPG sounds interesting too. -------------------- |

Quote (Strife543 @ 22nd March 2005 10:39) You know... I'm sure this was a topic before.... But, whatever ^-^ I'm probably wrong. You aren't. But that won't stop me, at least until a mod locks/merges this thread. In honor of the glorious NCAA Basketball tournament, I'll try and wangle an elite eight. Oh, and for the record I think of RPGs as menu-implementing, party-oriented games that focus on storyline and character development. This means that RPG-element action games like Zelda, the Soul Blazer trio (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma) and modern Castlevanias AREN'T RPGs. 1t. Chrono Trigger ( pub/del Squaresoft, SNES) - The beautiful simplicity of the game's mechanics, my favorite OST in all of gamedom (Mitsuda and Uematsu working together??? WTF???), great characters, great storyline, and lots of little things make this game wonderful. Things like ditching random battles for environmentally-placed enemies, a wonderfully smooth ATB system, and a wonderfully streamlined magic system that implements combinations beautifully. The only downsides to this awesome, awesome game are that it is a little short and not very difficult. 1t. Skies of Arcadia (pub Sega, del Overworks, Dreamcast) - In this game the world map actually becomes fun. Finding discoveries, ship combat, and exploration are key points to this title, making for a great new dimension to travelling across the world map. A solid if cliche storyline with FANTASTIC characters (Gilder is overlooked as one of the awesomest characters in gaming history, Vyse is a great traditional hero, Aika and Fina make good female supporting cast members), and a really really good turn-based battle system with balance make this my favorite Dreamcast game along with Soul Calibur. The music is decent, but the graphics are excellent, especially the environments and textures. All of the dungeons are so well designed, it is no chore to dungeon crawl in this game. My only beefs with this baby is that there are too many random battles and towards the end of the game money is NEVER a problem and you can buy your way to victory by purchasing stat-up items. 3. Final Fantasy VI (pub/del Squaresoft, SNES) - This game is the culmination of everything good about Final Fantasy in a single package. The storyline works very well and is always interesting, the FOURTEEN playable characters (take that, Wild ARMs) all have excellent character development (take that, Suikoden) and feature a good degree of balance, neither heterogenous nor homogenous. The OST is excellent, though not my favorite, and the graphics are excellent by SNES standards and is an excellent classic look by today's standards. Excellent overall, and the best Final Fantasy game to date. 4. Tales of Phantasia (pub Namco, del Wolf Team [which became Tri-Ace not long after], SNES rom) - The storyline is quite cliche, with rescuing mana spirits and saving a dying world that seems (and probably is) stolen from Secret of Mana and classic Final Fantasies, but the characters are solid and the principal villain, Dhaos, is my favorite RPG villain to this day (barely beating out Kefka and Galcian). The real joy of this game is the combat. It's set up like a 2d fighting game, controlling the main character while your supporting characters (a healer, wizard, summoner, and archer) back you up following a Star Ocean-esque strategy system that works fairly well. Very recommended. 5. Final Fantasy Tactics (pub/del Squaresoft, PS1) - The best strategy RPG ever devised. The plot to this game can be considered nothing short of epic, even if all of the characters short of Ramza and Delita are pretty flat. That doesn't stop Ramza and Delita from being two of the deepest, most intriguing characters in gaming history and everything else about this game being incredible. Though the battle system is kind of cumbersome, it is so entertaining that leveling up is actually fun and rewarding with a somewhat complex but well-designed class and ability based system. 6. Seiken Densetsu III (aka Secret of Mana 2, pub/del Squaresoft, SNES rom) - My favorite action RPG to this day. The multiple endings and dungeons and balanced variety of characters give this game more replay value than any other Squenix game I've ever played. The combat menus are exactly like Secret of Mana, but the rest of the battle system is way simpler, getting rid of those stupid weapon levels and weapon gauges. Plus, each character undergoes exactly two class changes, allowing you to customize what they bring to your party. Each class change can be light or dark. For example, your fighter character's first class change is either light (Knight), or dark (Gladiator). Knights can equip shields and learn healing magic while Gladiators get a larger boost in their attack stat and can use elemental saber magic. With each character having four possible "final incarnations" (LL, LD, DL, DD) , and six characters for a three-person party, there are 9600 final possible parties. Sweet. This rom teamed up with ToP and FF V to create nearly 200 hours of rom-addiction. 7. Final Fantasy VII (pub/del Squaresoft, PS1) - Doesn't it seem fitting that VII is number seven? This is the RPG that created a new generation of RPG players, with its cinematography, style, and storyline. This (or maybe FF VI) might be the turning point that brought Final Fantasy from a fantasy feel to a sci-fi feel, but it does so very well. A classic battle system with a very entertaining Materia customization system that does a fine job of keeping characters customizable, while their inherent stats and Limit Breaks keep them differentiable. Overall, a very good game worthy of the title Final Fantasy. 8. Pokemon Gold/Silver (pub/del Nintendo, GBC) - You guys are going to ridicule me for this one, but it's hard to deny that Pokemon is one of the huger phenomena in gaming history. I've only played Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Stadium, and Gold/Silver was the best game of the lot. It had an enormous variety of strategy and depth in combat and breeding, and was not always an easy play, even if leveling up was always a solution (gah... I detest leveling up). I'm certain that a large number of us were affected by the Pokemon fiasco (I was around 12 or so when the originals hit, but gave up on the franchise after G/S), and they were great games for a long time, really revitalizing the Game Boy. Plus, I'm willing to bet no one here could take on my Evee/Snorlax super-party. Sorry for being so long-winded. I feel like such a tool for putting down so many Squaresoft games, but hey, I was raised on 'em. And the SNES and PS1 are the greatest consoles ever. No question. Edit Haha, I took so long writing this that only Strife543's reply was up when I started. Weird. This post has been edited by laszlow on 22nd March 2005 22:23 -------------------- |

In no real order.
Final Fantasy IV It's challenging, with more developed characters, and a good storyline. Final Fantasy VI For all the reasons stated, and the first game with the funny moogles who made fun of espers. And Ultros, can't forget about Ultros. Final Fantasy I The one that started them all...And started the 8-bit Theater. Super Mario RPG I enjoyed playing as Bowser, and Geno was a nice add in. Final Fantasy II The first FF where playable character actually died, and the weapon system was okay. Tales of Symphonia A game with good graphics and a fair plot, though it did have some of the old cliche's. There wiil be more later, I just can't remember right now. Edit Added some, fixed the moogle thing, thanks laszlow This post has been edited by Green Magi on 22nd March 2005 19:19 -------------------- Could you repeat that? |

Um, lemme see...
1. Final Fantasy VI(SNES, PS) It's got a kick-ass soundtrack, battle system, magic system and summoning system. Not to mention it's got great characters and storyline. 2. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars(SNES) Yes, Princess Peach just killed a dragon with a frying pan... 3. Final Fantasy IX(PS) Definitely the best one of PlayStation, but that's just my opinion. 4. Chrono Cross(PS) The best replay value in the world, not to mention it's one of the only Perfect 10 games on GameSpot.com... 5. Seiken Densetsu 3(SNES) Another great SNES game and has an immense storyline and replay value(Light-Light, Light-Dark, Dark-Light, Dark-Dark). 6. Champions of Norrath(PS2) Incredibly addictive. I like all the classes, but I like Berserker the most. 7. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I(Xbox, PC) The best RPG for Xbox because of its light-dark system. Not to mention various classes, Force abilities, etc. 8. Final Fantasy X(PS2) It has the best graphics and a great storyline. Nice to get away from the Levelling Up system. 9. Final Fantasy Tactics(PS) What person doesn't like Zodiac spirits, stabbings, its class system, and more stabbing? 10. Diablo II(PC) Its one of the most addictive games on PC. My favorite classes are Druid and Barbarian. They provide for an interesting choice of classes from the obvious Knight-Mage-Thief-Cleric classes in every game. I'm gonna keep it at 5, otherwise I'm bound to ramble on forever. Keep in mind that 2 - 5 occasionally switch places on each other (or with other games) for no particular reason.
1. Final Fantasy VI (SNES, PSX) - A turning point in the series that broke a lot of traditions (i.e, a focus on technology, no crystals, airships that look like blimps/zeppelins rather than flying boats/ships, barely any distinguishment between job classes (much like in FFIIj), the ability to make everyone magic-using clones, etc.). Now, technically, that should mean anyone who has the gall to call themself a true FF fan should hate this game with a passion, but...I don't. Its plot, characters, and soundtrack in particular make up for any and all the grievous taint it introduced to the series, much of which has since flourished. Too bad most the ones after it, in my opinion, failed to hold their own in the same way.[/stick-in-the-mud] 2. EarthBound (SNES) - If you have not played EarthBound, you have never really lived. The sequel to the never-offically-released-outta-Japan Mother (aka, EarthBound Zero) on Famicom/NES, it's one of the worst blows to RPG's ever...but in a good way. It's humorous, has talking dogs, and contains a bad drug trip via magical Happy Cakes. What's not to love? Oh, and the plot's great, but more importantly you get to beat up on cultists. Dude, they paint their cows! 3. Bahamut Lagoon (Super Famicom/SNES) - Yet another gem that was apparently too good for western gamers, there's just something infinitely awesome about BL - I think it's the Mushrooms. Regardless, the raising dragons thingo adds a whole 'nother layer to a damn good strategy RPG. Kinda easy though, given the sheer amount of playable characters even more massive than FFVI (but not quite as massive as, say, Chrono Cross, and thank all that's holy for THAT). Also, as one of the last games released for the SNES, the visuals are some of the best you'll ever see in a 2D game. 4. Final Fantasy IV (SNES, PSX) - The best of the classic FF's (that is, the ones with the crystal fetish, among other things). In fact, I almost want to include FFIX and just make it a tie, but of course FFIX doesn't have Mithril Town/Silvera, so it gets bumped down a few notches. May a (not so) harsh fate befall those that don't have dancing pigs! In addition to its fantastical storyline (the only one I think got the "fantasy" atmosphere right), characters, and all-around greatness, it's also the last FF to seem impossibly challenging at times if you're unprepared (depending on the version you're playing. The so-called "easytype" isn't exactly what I speak of). Yay for challenge! 5. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES) - Had a hard time choosing between this and Chrono Trigger, FFIX, FFT, Wild ARMs, Live-a-Live, FFV, or Paper Mario (but we all know the originals are often better than the sequels) but c'mon. It's MARIO! Besides, Princess Toadstool hasn't been able to kick around enemies like this since SMB2, and since she isn't half bad at it, that counts for something! Quote The first game with Moogles was FF V, but none of them were "a fast-talking, street-smart, SLAM-dancing Moogle." Actually, the first game with Moogles was FFIIIj. They were Dorga's guardians. ![]() -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway. Well, my favorite RPG's are as follows:
1) Final Fantasy Tactics: The game that I jus' can't get enough of. I continue beating it and replaying it, and I never find it dull or boring. 2) Final Fantasy VIII: My first FF game ever and traditional console RPG in a long time when I got it, this game is one of the best ever. 3) Final Fantasy IX: The FF game I played after VIII, this one brings traditional FF elements to a modern era of gaming, and a fitting end to the PSX FF games. 3) Diablo: PC RPGs at it's very best, this series is definitely a must-play! 3) Phantasy Star: The Phantasy Star series got me into RPGs when I first started learning to read, thus this series holds special to me. I'm sure there's more, but that's my list for now. -------------------- "Thought I was dead, eh? Not until I fulfill my dream!" Seifer Almasy "The most important part of the story is the ending." The top RPGs of all time include the following:
Final Fantasy VI Simply one solid game. A stunning soundtrack by the great Nobuo Uematsu adorns a beautiful tale magic, technology, power and its abuse, good vs. evil, human emotion, grief and coping, friends and enemies, etc. etc. etc.. The graphics are some of the best I've ever seen on the SNES, trumped only by the smoother graphics of Chrono Trigger. In my opinion, this game ties with... Chrono Trigger Another extraordinary work produced at Squaresoft's peak. Mitsuda does an excellent job with the soundtrack (although helped by Uematsu on a few tracks), and the graphics here are even better than those of FFVI. Of course, we encounter some logic-holes related to time travel, but the game so successfully deals with this aspect that it doesn't leave me asking 'wait...shouldn't [abcdefg] have happened?'. A very solid plot, so well-done as to explain the origin of as diverse a cast as a teeange boy, a tomboyish princess, a nerd-girl, a cavewoman, a strange entity with interesting powers, a frog, and a robot. This game also has the best battle system I've ever found for an RPG. Super Mario RPG This game was simply fun. Despite the occasional plothole (well, this isn't the real world anyways!), the plot was nice and solid, and the music (done by Yoko Shimomura (who also composed for Kingdom Hearts), occasionally remixing the work of Koji Kondo and Nobuo Uematsu) just kicks ass. Not only did the game have an excellent story, the great number of side-features and minigames gives even veteran players of SMRPG a chance to have fun doing stuff. Add to that the sheer number of jokes and amount of humor that went into the game: From moments like the 8-bit Mario to "Drink punch...Eat cake...That sounds...complicated...", the game was chock full with good, clean, somewhat childish, but nevertheless truly funny humor, which has made it a pleasure for me every time I play through it. The only three things this game lacks are (1) the depth of meaning one can garner from a game like FFVI, (2) difficulty (this game was extremely easy, even without ultimate equipment, which was quite easy to access), and (3) Luigi. Other favorites include... Final Fantasy V Excellent gameplay involving the classic manipulation of character classes and abilities, set upon a very direct and powerful plot with exciting characters. The music isn't Uematsu's best, but is still very notable. Megaman Battle Network Whlie I haven't actually finished this game, this seems pretty darn good so far. The story seems pretty solid, as does the gameplay. And I like the battle system too. Final Fantasy IV Not the best Final Fantasy, but a solid one. A kind of precursor, graphically, musically, and in the quality of its storyline, to greats like FFVI. Final Fantasy VII A very complex and detailed plot, coupled with one of Uematsu's best soundtracks. The gameplay isn't the best, however. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance A nice tactical RPG which I haven't finished yet. But the plot doesn't seem to be the greatest one, and the equipment-learning system is a bit annoying. But the music is great. Supposedly great RPGs I have yet to play: Final Fantasy X Final Fantasy Tactics Tales of Symphonia Chrono Cross (despite the fact that I disagree with the story) -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. What, no Final Fantasies? Anyways, Morrowind is very, very long and an open-ended game with cool features like weather, wind, day and night, etc. Very cool. Plus, you can commit crimes like murder, theft, and breaking and entering. Nice.

Haven't I posted something like this before? Oh well.
Final Fantasy VI: This will always have a place in my gamer's heart. Tales of Phantasia: Awesome story, incredibly long, innovative battle system. Loveable characters. Diablo II: With World of Warcraft around, this game is now on it's last legs. I got into this game very late into the game (maybe two years ago), but I still think it is a classic. Chrono Trigger: Set a new standard in what determined what made a game "great." A grand ol' game that shouldn't be forgotten. |

Final Fantasy X (a load of fun) 5.) Final Fantasy VIII (not for everyone, but has the best main character for an RPG of all time, imo) 6.) Hehe, you basically posted almost every single good RPG. I love most of those games, though.

I hesitate to say that, as my favorite RPG of all time isn't there; I get the idea (s)he posted basically every RPG (s)he had ever played and enjoyed, except for the Castlevania and Zelda games, which AREN'T RPGs. -------------------- |

Legacy of Kain an RPG? Really? Don't just post random adventure/action games and say they're RPGs. That's bad. The Zelda series is the least likely I'd see for a RPG candidate. Castlevania with RPG elements may be a good candidate for an RPG because it doesn't involve many other action/adventure elements.

Star Ocean 2, the game so nice you named it twice.
Anyway laszlow, the jury's out on if Zelda is an RPG or not, so if he wants to call it that, that's up to him...same goes for some Castlevania games...or at least every other Castlevania game =P (IE; Castlevania II, Symphony of the Night etc.) Stop forcing your view of RPGs on him! =o Uh, I've...never heard Legacy of Kain called an RPG...but then, I've never played it. =P -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

I didn't force him to remove them from his list, and I didn't try to force my opinion on the definition of the RPG unto anyone. I just made a strong positive statement that Zelda and Castlevania AREN'T RPGs. He can call them whatever the hell he wants to call them, but I'll disagree with him. Don't take these things so seriously, people.
