Was writing a little thing when I realised at no point that I recall were we ever told exactly what the heck Red and his species are...
Possible spoilers: highlight to view for there must be more of his speicies according to the ending. And so, I just selcted some names that I made up for his species. I made them into a Poll, a rather flexible one that can help remind me if we were actually told, and lets other names be put forth, and decided to see... what name fits best? And no, the Uberroxxor Mountain Devilbadger is NOT applicable! ![]() Edit Oh yes:I Reckoned he was a Cosman Mountain Lion This post has been edited by Del S on 21st March 2005 20:41 -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

I've always preferred the term "Lionhound" for Nanaki's species, myself.

He reminds me more of a Wolf than any feline species, thus I voted for the Western Mountain Wolf.

Canyon lionhound.
Edit In response to what Dark Paladin wrote below, yes, I shoul have mentioned this: I also think that Red XIII was intended to have both lion-like and canine-like features. (Notice I specifically said 'lion' but used the more general term 'canine'.) The problem is that all the choices listed only offer wolf and lion as "one or the other." It defenitely looks like he was intended to have both features.
"Lionhound" really doesn't work, since "hound" is more of a "dog word" than a "wolf word." -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

Canyon Lionhound sounds about right. When you look at him, the way his muzzle looks, the way his shoulders are set, and his shorter coat make Red seem more doglike than wolflike, at least to me. Actually, his muzzle and tail are really the only vaguely catlike things about him, but whatever; I like Lionhound.

"Cosman" just doesn't sound right. Cosmoyan. (Similar to Samoia/Samoian) sp?.

Quote (Tidu-who @ 22nd March 2005 08:32) "Cosman" just doesn't sound right. Cosmoyan. (Similar to Samoia/Samoian) sp?. Perhaps, but maybe it's a little bit like how some people would say I am 'Scotch' when the correct term should be 'Scottish' or 'Scots' and the unfortunate creatures were offically named by some Midgarian biologist who wasn't thinking very hard. I mostly did this to figure what would make sense in a fic really. I reckon that gives the name a little bit more of a historical qurik actually. Another maybe: Maybe the names like 'Canyon Lionhound' and such were unofficial or local names? Quote (tifas lover @ 22nd March 2005 08:07) I'd prefur mountain lion but im not entirely sure hmm maybe we should e-mail square- enix... I don't reckon they ever actually said what he was, and they probably don't really care. Of course, three people at this time think otherwise... ![]() And on that would the three people who said we were told please tell me where and what we were told it was? Thank you. ![]() This post has been edited by Del S on 22nd March 2005 11:52 -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

Ok, at first I thought "We were told, fool!" was some kind of Mr. T. remark....
But seriously I'd call him a Midgarian Red Pantherwolf. That I'd say fits. Midgarian? But he lives quite a distance from Midgar.
Anyway, I'm sure Humans made a decent name, but what would the species name themselves? Certainly they had some name for themselves. Remind me, what was his father's name? There's Nanaki... Was his mother's name ever mentioned either? -------------------- |

Fabulous Freebird Makes a very good point to as the fact that he reminds me of a wolf more then a feline therefore I voted Cosman Desert Wolf.
And yes Kidjal, Nanaki's father's name was Seto. Lol just passed that part on the game like a day ago heh heh. ^-^ This post has been edited by Zeil on 24th March 2005 02:33 -------------------- Money is no good unspent. There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity. |

Well, it was mentioned that Red XIII had both a mother and a father.
Possible spoilers: highlight to view his mother died on the front lines fighting the Gi tribe while his father died preventing the spirits of fallen Gi from attacking Cosmo Canyon from the underground. Before learning of what happened to Seto, Red XIII was proud of his mother for what she did and ashamed of his father for not dying with her. One can only presume that Red XIII met another Lionhound (or whatever the hell you call them) to reproduce, as the ending to FF VII suggests he does.
