Are there people here who own or owned an MSX?

I still love it. Many great games were released on it in the 80's and 90's.
For instance, the Ys series, Xak series, Dragonslayer/Legend of Heroes series, the first Final Fantasy...

If you like to play made-in-Japan RPG's, but don't know this system, try to get an emulator, there are lots of shareware ones out there.

I can help you out with it, if you need some help finding it.

By the way, they (former ASCII) are planning on bringing the MSX system back to life.

As a reminder, note that you can help people find the emulators, but I wouldn't suggest helping anyone find ROMs using CoN resources. Thanks! - R51

Well, it had a superior version of the first Metal Gear (making the NES's version laughably bad in comparison), but other than that I never had my hands on one long enough to really get the full flavor. Sadly...

MSX is a computer system, developed by ASCII in cooperation with Microsoft, in 1982/1983.

The idea was to make a standard. Meaning, a system with 100% compatible components and software, no matter which company made stuff for it.
Also meaning, with TRUE plug and play. Everything made for it actually works on it, just plug it in and turn the computer on.
So, not like Commodore, Spectrum etc...

Companies that made MSX computers, hardware and software were, amongst others:

Panasonic/Matsushita
Sony
Technics
Casio
Philips
Konami
Square/Microcabin
Falcom
Compile

I believe MSX was the first system to have a decent graphical display (512/212 pixels in 1986).
Also, it was the first system able to perform a really well working combination between sound and graphics.

The last official type of MSX was manufactured in 1993 (if I'm not mistaken).
This computer, called the Turbo R, had an R800 chip, PCM sound sampling and a 16-bit processor.
Currently, Kai Nishi, former topman of ASCII, is working on a project to bring MSX to life again.

Many, many great games were developed on MSX.

The best feature of the MSX, though, always was the user-friendlyness and open structure.
Anyone could make something or do something with an MSX.

Hmmm... would the Turbografx-16 be considered a MSX system? I know Konami developed games for it but I'm honestly not sure if it's MSX or some kind of similar post-MSX deal.
