I don't know about the rest of you, but rare item drops drive me nuts.  I'm a game completist, and I always want to try to get everything.  But when that comes down to obtaining an item from a battle with an enemy that only drops it 1/294823 of the time, I get frustrated.  What about the rest of you?  What items with crazy odds have you actually obtained?

For me, the only notable one I can think of is the Sword of Kings in Earthbound.  One time through I fought for five hours without getting it and just gave up, and then on another time through I managed to get it after only about five fights with Starman Supers.  Then I realized it really wasn't all that great.  But hey, at least I beat the odds, got the powerup, and won the game.

the only item that has driven me nearly the edge of sanity to attempt to get was the Excalibur II from FF9.
I've tried about 4 times in a row to get it. The most recent time was my closest. I reached the Memoria terrace when the game clock was 2:10:32..... and damn, was i livid that i missed getting it by a mere 10:32

LOL!  OMG!!!  That is the exact one I thought right after I read your first paragraph.

I remember me and a friend were playing it late one night... it around 3 AM.    We were killing these for a few hours straight, and I was about to pass out.  Was sick of finding presants with cheap health items in them.... and I felt my jaw drop after I looted the Sword of the Kings.

On the other hand, I disagree with you about it being not all that great.  Poo had naturally high ATK power, and the bonus 30 from the sword was a nice help to it.  (Considering that it is one of the few weapons in the game he can use, and the ONLY one that will raise his ATK instead of lower it.)

Speaking of Earthbound, another hard-to-find weapon is Ness's Gutsy Bat, which can only be obtained as a rare drop from the Kraken fight in Magicant.  I've never found it personally, and I'm really not going to try: fighting Kraken with Ness alone about a hundred times is not my idea of fun.

Anyway, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is the Economizer in FFVI.  I felled Brachiosaur after Brachiosaur looking for the darned thing.  Even more frustrating is the fact that my friend got it after a few random encounters.  It was worth it in the end, though; aside from the Relic itself, I gained a lot of experience points.  Whoo.

The only rare item I've ever gotten from a battle would be the Sword of Kings. I've never managed to the Gutsy Bat, unfortunatly.  And I've played Earthbound many times.

The only one I really remember, was the Economizer......I never got one and I tried for hours.  the closest other one would be getting another Excaliber         (?Spelling?) in Bahamut Lagoon.  You can get one from any one of Alexanders final heads and there are 4 of 'em.  Unfortunately, they're hard to kill and once you beat one, you're pretty much stuck.

I've never found it personally, and I'm really not going to try: fighting Kraken with Ness alone about a hundred times is not my idea of fun.

Making that task even worse is the fact that there's only three of them in the little place where you fight them, and there's no way to make them come back, so if you don't get it in three tries you have to reset and walk through that whole long passage, just for another 3 in 240 chance of getting the bat.

I've never gotten any rare items, unless I got something rare without knowing it. I think the rarest thing I can claim is the malboro tentacles in FF8. I don't know how rare they were to find, but I just remember that my technique for those battles was to run around on the island closest to heaven and whenever a malboro fight popped up, I'd pray for Odin to show up, or else run away.

It really wasn't an item, but, yes, I fell for that Leo rumor too. The rumor said that you can get Leo if you use Leap in one battle (in the Veldt, obviously) and Gau comes back in the exact next battle ten times in a row, then Gau will come back the tenth time with Leo. Unfortunately, that never happened, and it took me a while before someone told me it was impossible to get Leo without a Gamegenie...sigh.

The only game where I ever got a rare item from a dead enemy was Diablo II. But then, that's not very difficult. Just kill a few unique enemies and you're sure to find something.

Even then I never found anything very good... -_-

Never got that damn pink tail. Tried pretty hard, but I gave up as usual. It's pretty frustrating, but it's way more original than having to fight a big boss or something to get it. I guess item drops add variety.
