Heh, sappy question time ^-^
My question is this, do any games (whether you own them, or have merely played them) hold any special meaning to you? I'm not sure how I could go about explaining this, so I'll list a few of mine. Super Mario World (Snes) This was the first Mario game I ever played (And that was when I was 3 o.o) Basically the only memory I have from when I was 3 is playing (And beating) my parents at this game. (I'm sure they let me win back then though o.o) Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening/DX (GB/GBC) The first game I paid for myself, I felt a strange sense of pride holding it. Throughout the next few days I played the game, and it was a much better expirence knowing I had got it all by myself. Diablo I: (PC) The first time I played this game was when my uncle lived with me, we always used to play this together. As well as build things (EG: Cardboard action figure bases) This went on for about a year, then he went back to Toronto, and I only saw him last year for the first time in 8 years o.o Now hes gone again ![]() -- I hope that clarifies what I mean, (Cause basically I have no other way of explaining it o.o) Do any of you have games that are like this? -------------------- Link: "What is it?" Mario: "It's coin, what the hell does it look like?" Link: "Well.... What do you do with it?" Mario: "You buy lives with them." Link: ".... Isn't that slavery?" ~Mario/Link crossover comic~ |

i guess i have to say that chrono trigger is a game that i hold dearly:) it was the first game i really got into aside from ff6. it was a great experience the first time thru, thats prolly why i love replaying it so much! also, SMB3 is another game thats special. it was the first nes game i actually beat lol! -------------------- "The answer is, of course, that it would be best to be both loved and feared. Pokemon Red/Blue (not Yellow): Brings back the old days when I would get up at 6:55 AM just to catch (no pun intended) the Pokemon episodes, and then play the game later that day using hints I learned from watching the show.
Pokemon Gold: I got to about the 3rd or 4th town when I stopped playing my GB cartridge, mainly because I had too much stuff to do in high school. There's that old feeling, though, of missing being a child who could enjoy videogames, carefree, without worrying about obligations. Mega Man X3: First played on SNES console. Many years later, played on an old SNES9x emulator that didn't support that rom, and produced heavily glitched graphics. I wanted to hear Toxic Seahorse's theme, but I was disappointed that I couldn't get past even the intro stage. Add to that the frustration of having somehow coordinated my first experience of being obsessed with a girl and my getting a viral infection that made my skin red and dry for exactly three weeks, and William Golding's Lord of the Flies. The intro stage track is now Meredith's battle theme in my game. Final Fantasy V: 'I cannot be defeated by anger or hatred...' -Exdeath...this quote has a special significance because of my having to see through the 2004 election. And that's only a short selection. I tend to associate a lot of things that happen around the same time, so that explains some (but not all) of them. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Mega Man X. My first game for my the SNES (which I got not long after the PSX was released). I can still get all of the upgrades (including Hadoken) and beat the game in around forty minutes.
Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons. I met one of my best friends through common interest in these games, about six years ago. I had Seasons and she had Ages, and we swapped to play linked games after we had beaten our own. Even though we dated briefly in high school, we've managed to stay friends for a long time. Nothing else comes to mind, but yeah, those two games were special. -------------------- |

The one game that holds the most significance to me is none other than Adventure on Atari 2600. Released in 1980, it's often looked upon as the precursor to modern console RPGs (even though it can be compared more to Zelda games nowadays) and was my first video game. The latter reason is the significant one, though.
![]() I have a lotta fond memories of Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt (NES), too. My older sister and I obsessed over that game(s) more so than any we had played before it came out, and every single day for about two years we'd come home from school and immediately plop down in front o' the TV intent on proving who was better (and to this day she still wins there ![]() Both Star Fox (SNES) and Star Fox 64 (N64) make me feel really nostalgic whenever I play them, probably because it's one of the only space-shooter series I've ever been all that interested in. Not only that, but SF64 alone I probably spent more money on renting and re-renting than all the games I ever bought (at that time) combined. Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - I got it the Christmas after it came out, but at that time our neighbor was borrowing our SNES, so my sister and I couldn't play it. That is, until we snuck into his house through the window one morning. This also sticks out in my mind because it was one of the last few winters where we got over a foot of snow 'round here that didn't melt before noon the next day. Anyway, we stayed for several hours playing all the way up to the industrial area. Yes, two game addict sisters breaking and entering (without the breaking, that is) just to play DKC. Ahh, memories. To make the day even better, in my twisted idea of humor, on our way back home a snowplow came down the road and my sister, standing a little too close to the road, ended up getting covered in the white stuff. I guess it's one of those "you just had to be there" moments. Then there's Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VI. I can't even begin to list the sentimental value those two games have. But among many things, they forced me to truly appreciate great music in video games, and they're two of the best examples of that. And lastly (although I'm sure there're many more I'm forgetting), good ol' classic Pac-Man. Outta all the games I've played against my mom, it's the only one I can beat her into the ground at. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway. If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong. - Murphy’s Law Boing! Final Fantasy 7 holds a very special meaning for me, it was the first game that ever got me emotionally involved. I first played it when I was around 13, the characters, plot and everything else really got to me. What really got to me were the Midgar situations, Barret's past and the "incident" at the end of Disc 1, if at all they motivated me even more to beat this game.

Phantasy Star II. This game got me interested in RPGs when I was first goin' ta' school, and I've been hooked on RPGs all my life.
Diablo. It got me hooked on the RPG PC market and I realized, "hey, RPGs aren't bad on the PC rather than home consoles." It also got me interested in "dark" themes and characters. Also my first RPG I played after about 2 or so years. Thus, this one is a special game to me. Final Fantasy VIII. I got this as a Christmas gift in '99 and the first home console RPG since my Sega broke down. I've been playing the Diablo series, and wrestling and fighting games on my newly brought Playstation (at that time) and this game recaptured that fire and emotional goodness I got out of Phantasy Star, thus I've been a huge FF addict. So these are my proverbial "top three" games that hold special meaning to me. Right now, all I play are FF games whenever I can and Smackdown! games every once in a great while. -------------------- "Thought I was dead, eh? Not until I fulfill my dream!" Super Mario Bros. When I first got a Nintendo, this was the only game I had for about 2 years. But that didn't stop me from playing it every time I got the chance, until I knew every hidden block (although I still couldn't beat World 7-4 until I was much older.)
Tecmo Super Bowl Best. Game. Ever. Me and all my friends, when we weren't out playing sports, were at someone's house playing this game. We'd all pick a team and go through an entire season in a weekend. It was awesome. I wish we still did that. -------------------- Hip-Hop QOTW: "Yeah, where I'ma start it at, look I'ma part of that Downtown Philly where it's realer than a heart attack It wasn't really that ill until the start of crack Now it's a body caught every night on the Almanac" "Game Theory" The Roots |

I can't say I've ever had a strong emotional bond with the games I've played. Not quite there yet... >_>
However I have had strong emotional moments when playing them. FFVI had a lot of 'em. When Sab and Edgar reminicse in the castle, it was the first time I realized these characters felt real. I'd never played a game where I witnessed the kind of subtlety that the scene displayed. Silent Hill was a real jolt as well. First time I ever played a game that out and out scared me. I hadn't seen a horror movie that scared me like that game did. Ico I think was the last game I played that had an emotional impact on me. Not as straight foward, but...odd. I felt real protective of Yorda, the princess you had to drag around everywhere. I actually played the game different because of her, doing whatever possible to keep her from being forcibly yanked on the arm by my character. I ended walking through most of the castle when I could have ran. Weird stuph... -------------------- |

Parappa the Rappa. It was the very first epic tale I ever played, about forbidden love, war and chaos, madness, insanity, revenge, and Moon Pies.

Terranigma will always be the greatest game of all time for me, because, epsecially at the time I played it, the hero and his story just resonated with me so completely.
Chrono Trigger remains one of my greatest gaming experiecnes because its story, and "cinematics" and hell, everything there was to it jsut blew me away. Its was the third RPG I played, adn the frist really good one. Final Fantasy 6 later had the same effect. Those probably have the most meaning to me in terms of really capturing the essence of living the adventure, and really hitting home for me everything I desired in an amazing story. -------------------- And behold, I saw a Pale Gaming System, and the name of he who rode it was Squaresoft, and Enix followed him. |

Sure, I had a great time playing Command Keen back in the days, or the very first Leisure Suit Larry that pixeled its way on floppy's through school....B:/ drive, people!
But as far as sentimental value goes, it's simply FF VI. It was this game that got me into gaming forums (first CoN, GameFAQs later), and gave me the push I needed to start exploring the data in the game. It's a wonderful experience to talk to people around the world who have a shared interest, and feel what you feel when you've found yet another insignificant bug in the game. FF VI is more then a game to me; in fact I hardly ever actually play it. It's the foundation of several communities I participate in, and that's definately a 'special meaning'. -------------------- |

I started playing in the SNES era, and my first game was Mario Paint. That game holds a special place for me...
LoZ:Link's Awakening was the first Zelda game I ever played, and it started my obsession with games and Zelda. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was my absolute favorite game on the SNES, and to this day it my all-time favorite. I beat that game over and over, and it was THE thing I did after school EVERYDAY. I love that game too death, and I consider it to be the game that really made me a gamer. It was, in every way, the ONLY PERFECT game ever. No game will ever compare to it, EVER. No matter how many new Zeldas they dish out (like 2005's upcoming one, which I currently have reserved), they won't compare, regardless of how good. When you love gaming as much as I do, and you have a devotion to your fav game, you never will let another game give you that same feel. LttP gave me a feeling that can't really be expressed. Is it the atmosphere? The music? I have no idea, but it drew me in like no other game can. If it were the last game I ever could play, I'd be satisfied. *looks up* Damn. ![]() --I wuv you LttP.-- *TRIBUTE'D!* -------------------- "Dance, water, dance!" -Demyx, Kingdom Hearts II "I met my love before I was born..." -AFI, 'Love Like Winter' from 'Decemberunderground' Currently Playing: Guitar Hero, Shadow of the Colossus |

One of my most euphoric gaming moments was finally playing FFIX. It was after VII, VIII and Origins I really started getting in to Final Fantasy (forums, websites, all that) and it struck me I hadn't played FFIX. I wandered down to HMV and ordered it.
Two months and four days. That's how long it took. Every week they'd say 'oh, it's just gone platinum (which it hadn't, it'd been platinum for quite a while) and they'd have to get in contact with the warehouse. Finally, it arrived, I got some vouchers as an apology, and I ran home to play it. I maintain the intro to that game is the greatest intro ever, and the one thing that thrust me head on into the world of FF. I love that intro. |

Well yes, I have a few:
SMB1 (NES)-- What can I say? This was the very first game I ever played. Donkey Kong (Arcade/NES)-- The first game I ever beat, age 4 or 5. Dragon Warrior (NES)-- My very first RPG, ever. I played this game when I was 6-ish and beat it when I was 12. I'd say it is what opened me up to RPGs. The Pokémon series (GB-GBA)-- I was really hooked to this game. I would play it hours on end. I looked forward to getting up early in the morning just to play it. The Zelda series (all Nintendo Systems (*except for DS ![]() Super Mario RPG SNES) -- The first RPG I ever beat, and one of my favorites at that. Kingdom Hearts-- This intrested me in the Final Fantasy series, and this is one of my Favorite Games EVER. Final Fantasy X-- My First FF and the First one I defeated. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance-- This one was the second one I defeated, and made me an RPG addict. Final Fantasy IV-- My favorite FF ever. What else is there to say? Final Fantasy I (NES or PS1)-- This game made me realize when I was 14 that the old games are just as fun as the new ones. -------------------- Dang.
