The topic says it all,if this topic has been made before i'm sorry for wasting
space(spamming) Guardian Force(NES)-this game is weird AND underrated, its a great game (like Zelda)but is a little weird you play as a guy(or is it a robot?!)who must save a star from evil organisms, its like zelda but you shoot instead of using a sword, you also get new guns and a laser sword *gasp*,the music reminds me of Sega Genesis RPGs the ones when your in space.I consider this underrated because i've never heard anyone talk(type) about, unless its a bad game. Well, i'll post more underrated weird games later,it doesn't have to be an underrated weird game,it could just be underrated or it could just be a weird game, and again i'm sorry if this has been posted before -------------------- "...But we will succeed. Monster Party for the NES is pretty underrated, and pretty weird, but I'm one of the few people who actually likes it, apparently.
You play as a boy who encounters a griffinlike creature from another dimension named Bert (the creature, not the dimension) who thinks the boy's baseball bat is the most capable weapon for ridding his world of evil monsters, or something. So you, as the boy whose name I forgot, must traverse through several areas of Bert's world and fight off enemies like dog-people, walking pairs of pants, land fish, and cute little kittens. There're also a few bosses in each level like a scythe-wielding bull who shoots miniature cows, an inanimate well, a giant coconut man, and a bouncing piece of fried shrimp that morphs into an onion ring and then into what looks like three fish sticks. Occasionally you can pick up a power-up that resembles a Prozac pill which will allow you to control Bert for a limited time. Bert is much better at the whole "fighting" thing than What's-His-Face, which makes what little story there is a moot point. The game is kinda short, but entertaining, and there's a nice twist during the ending. The Adventures of Lolo series (especially the first one) is underrated, too. They're addictive puzzle games with an innovative style and a blue blob with eyes. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. Earthworm Jim. Though at the time you could make a case for it being very rated. Weird game though.
My number one? Toejam and Earl!!! (the original) I don't know how many people have played this game but it is excellent. You walk around on all these islands in space collecting present boxes which contain random good and bad items. You fight off the boogie man (boogie boogie boogie!), mad scientists, and if you find an opera singer you get rewarded with something. Not to mention that some of the islands have cheese like quicksand and it rains tomatoes. I definitely recommend it to any old schoolish gamer. "Wake up, Wake up. WAKE UP!!" -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |

"Pocky and Rocky"(SNES) was a weird, underrated game. You could play as a shinto priestess or a racoon who threw cards or leafs at anything that moved. The plot is a little cliché but if you take the time to actualy play, it does seem quite odd. Just take a look at the first boss, his giant brown head, shooting nuts as a weapon and storing an extra life in his basket. Very weird indeed.
Brawl Brothers(SNES) Was another odd yet underrated one. You could choose two of any of the main characters at the start. Then the others must have all been brainwashed or something because they were bosses. Some people might not think that is weird but consider this. After you beat the final boss he asks you what kind of cereal do you eat and comments on how he broke a nail. If that isn't strange, I don't know what is. Honerable mention to Earthbound(SNES again), though not underrated, it was the weirdest game ever. Since it isn't realy underrated, I won't discribe it. (But what would a weird game topic be without even the slightest mention of it?) -------------------- |

HAHAHAHAH I remember that game now. Aside from the nostalgia effect, that game was terrible! but you've reminded me of Zombies Ate My Neighbors(SNES). 60 levels of un-ending b-movie references....so good. Pocky and Rocky was so so...Legend of the Mystical Ninja was much better. They've actually made 2 sequels to ToeJam and Earl. Zombies ate my Neighbors is definately up there. Quality, mindless SNES game.
Maniac Mansion for Nintendo was a great, weird game. It was one of those point and click puzzle games, where a group of teenaers walking around a mansion trying to save the main character's girlfriend who's been abducted by a mad scientist who's being controlled by an evil meteor. They just don't make 'em like this anymore. Wish I could find a copy of this game, haven't played it in ages. I love unrealistic sports games, too, like Super Baseball 2020 and Archrivals. -------------------- Hip-Hop QOTW: "Yeah, where I'ma start it at, look I'ma part of that Downtown Philly where it's realer than a heart attack It wasn't really that ill until the start of crack Now it's a body caught every night on the Almanac" "Game Theory" The Roots |

I played it on my friend's original cart too, with the hamster + microwave! Good stuff, Maniac Mansion. I had down to such an art of getting through it in two hours.
Another game had that puzzle feel, Shadowgate. I honestly forgot how to beat it. Last time I played, I lost keys, so it was a bum trip. The nostalgia alone was priceless though. |

Ganbare Goemon2,3,and 4(SNES)-Their not underrated(their quite popular in Japan),but their weird though, they were only released in Japan but I managed to download them, and since i don't read Japanese they are weird to me (I don't even know the stories!)these are the only things I was able to note about these games GG2-There's this guy in a rabbit suit(1st boss)and the last boss is a mexican-looking guy. GG3-You get a gay(?) guy as a partner as he skips around and some lady(?) who looks like your partner.'Nuff said. For GG4 I coudn't note since I haven't made it past the first house. And if anybody's wondering these are sequel's to the SNES's Legend of the Mystical Ninja. Go Go Ackman(SNES)-Now this is Underrated at it's finest, again I consider this underrated because i've never heard anyone talk(type) about it,you play a demon from hell who must collect souls from angels...At least I think that's how the story goes, and Akira Toriyama(creator of Dragon ball and Dragon ball Z)drew the characters,so you'll see familiar faces (any Trunks fans look at the main character for a surprise). -------------------- "...But we will succeed. The Dynasty Warriors series. When it comes to mindlessly hacking up hundreds of soldiers, nothing comes close. Critics never like it, but it's got a following like you won't believe.
Going old school, I was a big fan of The 7th Saga for SNES. That game was a lot of fun, even if there was a bit too much of a need to level up. -------------------- |

Thinking about the game brings a smile to my face. But I don't want some poor sap playing it thinking it's going to be a good game. The graphics make me cringe...as evidenced by the fact that you can never really figure out what the heck you are fighting? The music was pretty cool though. Obviously the non-sensical story is the game's #1 selling point. Upon looking back, it's hard not to classify any of the games we grew up on as wierd. Super Mario Bros.???? Plumbers fight turtles and corrupt mushrooms in a land they traveled too in a pipe? Kid Icarus??? I'm not even sure what the story was for that...something about medusa, but you turned into an EGGPLANT for heaven's sake. Secret of Evermore. No, seriously. I played it all the way through 3 times, as opposed to Secret of Mana I played all the way through once. It was just quirky and cool in a really cheezy way, plus I liked the concept of alchemy for the magic system.

I do. The alchemy does in fact rock hard. I love the music, and the characters are pretty cute. I say everything is cute, dangit. Terranigma and Illusion of Gaia, doods. Both very cute, and fun to play with awesome music. I think these two and Evermore were a series? I'm not sure. I mean, it's not as though the names give it away. And FF Mystic Quest, dangit. Despite how hated it is because of how late in the FF game it came, it was still a very cute game. The graphics aren't bad, and I kind of like the battle layout. It was like one of the gameboy games on the SNES. Besides, if you're a 10 year old it's easier to start with that FF rather than jumping into say... FF4 or something more complex. The Bouncer. Not too many people have played this game, and those that have sometimes think of it as a sub-standard replacement for an early PS2 Final Fantasy. But when you take away all the comparisons, I think it's a really solid game. The fighting mechanic is fun in the old beat-'em-up style, and the plot, though not revolutionary, was entertaining. The characters were interesting as well, for the most part. The graphics were gorgeous too, of course. Something about the feel of The Bouncer really appealed to me, and though it is generally remembered fondly, I think it deserves a little more attention.

My brother still has the cart for Maniac Mansion. I still remember when I was little, watching him playing it. I recall him running into the crazy scientist.
![]() As far as Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma being part of a series, the first one was called Soul Blazer. Great game. The Lufia series is something you don't often hear about (probably since it's quite rare). One of the greatest RPG series. Where I live, only the second one was released (there's 4 games: 2 for SNES, one for GBC and a GBA one). I recently picked it up, unopened, for AUS$100. I've played the other 3 in a...different way... If you haven't heard of this old PC game, it's most likely under-rated... X-Com: UFO Defense (aka X-Com: Enemy Unknown in Europe). From what I've seen, not many people are familiar with it. The game commands a small yet loyal following, with at least five fan projects having been started in an effort to recreate it with updated graphics and features (only one stands a good chance of being completed at the moment). You can still find this very addicting game on ebay, but finding a computer slow enough to play it can be tricky (486 or a Pentium no faster than 233mhz... unless you can get those CPU slowdown programs to work properly... sound and all).
There is no other game like X-Com. Aliens are invading earth, and the governments of the world meet together to form X-Com (Extra-terrestrial Combat Unit), an agency responsible for dealing with the alien threat. You're the head of this agency. At the start of the game you can build a base anywhere in the world, which is a globe you can spin with the controls. Each major country pays you money every month based on your ability to deal with the alien threat in their areas. You need to take this into consideration when picking a place for the base. Once built, the base scans the skies within the rage of it's radar systems. When a UFO is detected, you send out interceptor ships to attack it. If you can cause the UFO to crash land, you can investigate the crash site with a transport ship filled with ground troops. The battle system here is turn based. Each one of your soldiers has a certain amount of time units to be used per turn. These time units can be used to walk around, shoot aliens, throw grenades and many other tasks. Once you're done with your turn you click an end turn button and the aliens take their turn. When the mission is over (assuming you defeated all the aliens at the crash site) you send the alien materials back to base for research. You have a team of scientists there ready to research the goods. At the start of the game all of your technological stuff is inferior to what the aliens have. Once you finish researching alien weapons and technologies you get to use them, and manufacture new stuff. You also learn about the aliens themselves by researching corpses and live aliens (it's hard to capture certain races alive). You learn more by capturing higher ranked aliens, which you'll find only in large UFOs and alien bases. This learning process goes on for a while with new alien races appearing with new weapons. Eventually you can use mind control to bring alien units under your control. This is extremely fun. Make other aliens do the dirty work for you, or even have them be suicide bombers. This is great because aliens are dangerous, and your soldiers can die very easily (in one shot many times, even with armor). This makes the process of finding aliens very creepy. Soldiers that survive a mission are rewarded with higher stats and rank. The aliens do more than just fly around waiting for you to shoot them down. Each UFO has a mission, and there are different types of UFOs to carry out these different tasks. Some come to terrorize cities (which you have to respond to or risk losing a lot of finacial support from countries). Others come to build and supply alien bases (which you have to find, infiltrate with troops and destroy). There are also UFOs are sent for scouting certain areas or abducting animals. UFOs can come to a country to take over the government (which means no more money from that country). Finally, UFOs can also be sent to attack your base (which you have to defend with troops and/or exterior missle defenses, or you lose the base). As you may be able to tell from this long description, this is a very deep game. If you have an old computer sitting around, I highly recommend picking up a copy and playing it. There's a bit of a learning curve due to a significant amount of micro-management, but once you get the hang of it it's a fantastic and one-of-a-kind game. I almost guarantee that you'll love it if you have any interest of strategy games. There were 4 sequals, each one worse than the last. So the original is the best. All three of the games I can think of are N64, probably because I missed the era of the SNES and the NES, where apparently all the weird games were.
Glover- Probably not underated, but surely weird. Really weird. Extremely.... weird. Who wants to be a magical glove who plays basketball? Apparently a vast majority of the gaming population. That's just plain disturbing. Mischief Makers- Not so much underrated as weird. I love the part where you get to throw ghostly like people into raging flames. And the part where the stalker wants to be just like you. =P But seriously, this game was fun. At least, I enjoyed it. Most of the people I know would want to have a ceremony where they burn all the copies on the earth, though. Banjo-Kazooie- Almost overrated, but hell, weird games seem to attract attention these days. In this game you get to control a banjo playing bear with a kazoo playing bird unhumanely sutffed in your 1*1 foot backpack. I'm sure that's the reason the bird has anger management problems. Youi also get to learn mover from a mole, and have to save your sister from the ugliest witch who conveniently lives next door to Banjo and his friends. God, I love this game. Quote (Hikaroo @ 21st December 2004 05:14) Terranigma and Illusion of Gaia, doods. Both very cute, and fun to play with awesome music. I think these two and Evermore were a series? Illusion of Gaia and then Terranigma were both sequels to Soul Blazer, another single-person action-rpg classic. They are both tremendously fun games, but the plot to Illusion of Gaia just fails, especially comparing it to that of Terranigma. Secret of Evermore was a solo effort from Square America, whose job used to be just localizing Japanese games, that had moderate success and was modeled after Secret of Mana. I liked Mana and Evermore, and there is a rather die-hard contingent that wants there to be a sequel to Evermore, but it isn't happening. Edit Oh, and the Soul Blazer trio was Enix America, I'm not sure if they ever got a Japanese release either... This post has been edited by laszlow on 24th December 2004 15:50 -------------------- |

I have to agree with Super Mario RPG and The 7th Saga. Great games.
I love Legaia 2: Duel Sage for PS2. This RPG had everything I looked for in an RPG, and is one of the best on the system in my opinion. Also Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits. Not a great game, but one hell of a storyline. Basically two brothers fighting against each other, one of which is a human and the other a demon (well, they're actually both demons) You'd have to play it to truly appreciate it I suppose. -------------------- This is my world: (Got my second chapter up, 3rd Chapter about 80% complete) http://www3.sympatico.ca/daniel876/homepage.html |

I also agree with Super Mario RPG, no one knows what I'm talking about when I try to talk about it.
Another game is Guardian Hero's for Sega Gennises, there isn't a hero really. Anyway, you control an ancient Knight who came back, and there are several ways to finish the story. But most of the young Final Fantasy's are underated. I try to talk about FFI, FFIV, FFVI etc.; but no one has any idea what I'm talking about. But EVERYBODY knows about FFVII. I wish they made all the old games anew... -------------------- Could you repeat that? |

I totally agree with Zombies ate my Neighbors. Classic all the way.
I'm not entirely sure what ranks as underrated, because I didn't really start paying attention to reviews or anything until the current generation of systems, but from what I can tell, the following games are. Correct me if they were crazy popular and I'm just a fool. 1. Skies of Arcadia (DC) - As I mentioned in its thread earlier this week, this might be my favorite game of all time. Great plot, interesting characters, and a well-integrating ship combat system. It just had the misfortune of being released on the most doomed system since the Jaguar or R-Zone, if you consider the latter a system. Absolutley worth the $15 cost of a Dreamcast. 2. Jade Cocoon (PS) - While this was a hardcore Pokemon ripoff, I don't really care. Some of my favorite games of all times were copying established games, including FF. Jade Cocoon had an intersting merging system that I found enjoyable, and the battle system was good enough to keep me playing until the next capture. 3. Rock and Roll Racing (SNES) - The most badass racing game of all time (sorry Mario Kart fans, it's true). There's nothing like exploding Rip and Shred with missles and then hitting the boost to pass Rage along the final stretch, all the while listnening to a 32 bit rendition of Paranoid by Black Sabbath. If you never played this, it should be on an emulator by now, so give it a shot. I also agree with Green Magi about FF games. Sure, everyone here knows about IV and VI (it's why we're here, in fact), bust most people don't. Some of my friends consider VII to be old school FF, and I think a lot of the general populace thinks the same way. |

Crusader of Centy, for the Sega Genesis. Great game, totally a zelda ripoff, but great nonetheless. If you haven't played this game you MUST. I honestly don't think I've ever seen people even talk about this game, but I love it. The one weird thing about it is. As you go along, animals join you. You can have two animal helpers out at a time and each one gives you some ability. The games a definite favorite though.

Quote (The Ancient @ 17th December 2004 10:45) They've actually made 2 sequels to ToeJam and Earl. So they made a Toejam and Earl for X-Box? I would totally get it if I didn't have PS2 instead. It appears similar to the original which is good (because the second one was terrible. jar throwing? what??) Quote The Dynasty Warriors series. When it comes to mindlessly hacking up hundreds of soldiers, nothing comes close. Critics never like it, but it's got a following like you won't believe. Yes, quite fun. The game also makes learning about ancient china and the Three Kingdoms incredibly fun and interesting. If anyone has to take a course in Ancient China, go right out and buy this game. -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |
