Most of Final Fantasy follows a similar formula, even the movie.

There's always an Evil Empire, there's always some sort of airship and the unleashing of an evil from the buried past, a group of heros assigned to stop an disaster of epic proportions, some sort of villian close and tangible, final form of super villian etc etc.

Nothing really new to see. In fact, if there was a deviation, it would probably be derailed.

I'd have to agree with elessar here. Personally, I see it as a good thing because with each subsequent game, you're finding things that are similar (interface, item selections, characters, battles, etc) to previous FF games, while not having to be a watered down plot sequel. They take what's good from previous FF games, build further on them, add in a few new features, and follow a unique group of characters.

LOL I see your point.... but then that makes every game where the goal is to rescue a princess/female of some sort just a ripoff of the first NES Mario Bros., doesn't it?

No, some girls that get captured can normally beat their own share of the bad. Princess Peach doesn't fight at all, unlike Zelda.
And not all video game villans are the same, Kefka has to be the 2nd most orignal. It's more like FFVII is a spinnoff of VI.

Don't forget Super Mario Bros. 2 and Paper Mario 2

(you fight against her as part of the final battle in the latter).

Anyways, I agree that those points listed are just similarities found in several RPGs. Now if only the people who think FFIX is a rip-off of FFVI would pound that revelation into their heads. tongue.gif

Edit
My bad for going off-topic. To elaborate: In FFII and FFVI, the motives of the empires and their emperors are very different. While they both apparently want world dominition (and who doesn't?), the ways in which they attempt to gain it are not at all related to one another. That's almost like claiming every RPG featuring a corrupt kingdom is a clone of another. Also, while it's true your parties consist of people opposed to those empires in both games, the individual stories of those characters involved as well as the backgrounds of their groups (the Altair rebels and the Returners) can't really be compared. As for Borgan (whom I assume is who you're referring to there), I never noticed any Kefka-ishness to him. While it's probably true that Square intetionally reused some ideas, FFVI isn't anywhere close to what I'd call a "clone".

Lets compare the characters. (FFII first)

Princess Hilda: would most likely be Celes, ruler of an army.
King: Former king of Figaro, both suffering from some illness
Black Knight: For some reason he reminds me of Leo, he is quite strict and has a seat of power.
The Traitor (sorry I forgot his name): Kefka, except without the laugh and clothes and theme.
Paul the Thief: Locke, both are supposedly the greatest theives of all time.
Maria: Terra
Guy: Sabin, they look the same

And that is all the connection I can make right now. Except of course that both summon another creature to do their bidding. (demons/monsters, espers)

Edit
Cid: Cid, they even look alike...
Minwu: Maduin, or Shadow, both sacrifice themselves

Well most RPG's follow the formular of saving the world. so it's hard to talk about a clone since they look alike, yet they are so different:)

Hmmm...

I don't think they're really clones...their battle systems are totally different.

But if you think about it...their storylines are oh-so similar...

The people of Fynn are like the Returners and the Paramecian (sp?) empire are like the emipire.

And there's a plot-twist that's not in FFVI:

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Maria's brother Leon is actually the Dark Knight (I think that's what the knight is called, it's been awhile since I've played FFII), who works for the Paramecian Empire.

Perfect plot twist! thumbup.gif
