As the battle for the handheld market begins to shape up between Sony and Nintendo, the latter's latest entry in the market is selling like hotcakes --- and it has not even been released yet.

Many major video game retailers, including Gamestop, are ceasing from taking further preorders for the Nintendo DS as they have already sold out of their launch day allotment of the device. It is beginning to appear that it may be difficult (just as it has been with recent past hardware releases, the Nintendo 64 and Playstation 2 coming specifically to mind) to get the handheld on its November 21 launch date.

The titles (as of right now) that are expected to be in store by launch date are: Asphalt Urban GT (Ubisoft), Madden NFL 2005 (Electronic Arts), Urbz: Sims in the City (EA), Feel the Magic XY/XX (Sega), and Spider-Man 2 (Activision), and, of course, Super Mario 64 DS.

Someone want to be my Rich Uncle Pennybags? With its backward compatibility with the GBA, I would love to have one of these things. I can neither afford nor justify spending 150 dollars on one at the moment, however.

Or so we hope; if FF3 failed to come out for this platform, it wouldn't be the first time such a thing has happened.

Because it's illegal and not for the SNES.
Having it on a handheld device would be much more convenient than a desktop computer.

Dang it sold out practicaly, I think I will get my DS when they have a price drop on it or scanning Ebay for a buy-it-now. either way i never get a console/Handheld when they come out at least not a year or two (Although I got a GBA 2 months after it came out.). Either way they better make FFIII for DS, I also read in a Electronic Gaming monthy about some talk of FFIV, V, VI, and Chrono Trigger Maybe coming to DS. Lets Hope any of the 5 come out DS (Preferably FFIII).

Unfortunately I'll have to wait until next month before I can get my hands on one but it'll be worth the wait. This system is probably the one that I'm looking foward to the most. Actually, I've never wanted a system this bad in my life so I'll have one in a couple of weeks. I don't think that we're sold out of reserves where I live though because I live in a town that sold less than 1,000 Halo 2 reserves so we had people from Georgia coming in to my little town in Texas to get a copy the day it came out.

Then again, the N64 also ran up a long pre-order queue. The DS is just selling pre-orders well because it's a Nintendo handheld. Time will tell if the system is wildly successful or not. With Sony attacking the handheld market, it may not be easy.

It appears that The DS didn't sell like hot cakes here. I went and bought one this morning and I didn't even have it reserved, granted there weren't any games out on the shelves yet when I bought it so I just had to settle with the Metroid First Hunt playable demo that came with it, but I still had to have it. If you egt a chance, pick one of these up. They are definately worth the money.

They're definitely selling here, as in they're sold out. Most of the stores won't actually have them available until tomorrow, and the store I'm getting mine from said they'll only hold preorders until tomorrow evening. I'll pick it up around noon just to be safe...and because I'm impatient. tongue.gif

Supposedly they'll have the games in by then, too.

It just so happens that I did get to try it out beforeI bought it. A week before as a matter of fact. Walmart had one on display around the 15th or so and I got to check it out while I was there. I knew that the Nintendo DS was going to be good, but I was going to wait until the end of December to buy one. After I played it though I decided I had to have it the day it came out so I woke up at about 6 AM in the morning and rushed down to the store to get one. The lady that sold it to me had to go to the back to get one because they hadn't even put them out on the shelves. If that doesn't tell you how bad I wanted this system then I don't know what will.
As for the games, GameStop has a few games now (they got them in around noon), but only a few. As in Spider-Man2, Mario 64 DS and some Simms game, and that was it. I hope there are more releases between now and Christmas because I can't wait to start grabbing new games for this thing.

I got mine today along with the demo and SM64DS (it's like the original times four. Literally!) and as far as I can tell the dual screen isn't the least bit clunky. Using the stylus on the touchscreen kinda acts like an analog stick, so for some games you'll only really need that and the control pad. Plus, you always have the option of using the wrist strap instead so it's just like an extra two or three buttons.

It's lookin' to be well worth the money.

well, i'm now thinking about getting one as soon as possible. when that'll be is a mystery. of course, some of the games i want take priority over the DS, so i guess it'll just have to wait.

I work for a Wal-Mart Supercenter, in the electronics department, and we had people in line to get the DS at 3:00 pm on Saturday, just so they could buy a copy at 12:01 on sunday. We were sold out by 12:10.

I really want one, but with my current budget, I can't justify spending $180 (console + game) for one. Maybe my wife will get one for me for my Birthday next year. = \

I am a nintendo fan here but I am not interested in the DS for a several reasons. These mainly have to do with the implementation of the two screens. Here are my main reasons for not being excited by nintendos newest handheld:

1. I would be constanly distracted from one of the screens by the other.

2. The touch screen would force me to take my hands off the controlls just to interact with it.

3. The price sounds ridiculous. 150 dollors without the game!!! I could buy a new GC and a new game and still have twenty bucks left over. I am broke and would rather get the money and save it then spend it on a liability.(Or maybe buy a couple more games instead. smile.gif ) It could get ruined quite easily.

4. Gameboys have a bad habit of getting lost and having their only screen scratched. I don't expect the DS to be any different. See #3 for more detail.

5. Nintendo will probably come out with a better, more compact, better version of the same thing, at a later date.

Normaly I would try it out before I pass judgement on it but my local game store doesn't carry them yet. . . That has left me with allot of time, time I used to reconsider my initial excitement over the device. Now I won't be able to say I own all of the nintendo consels sad.gif . For anybody who is considering buying one here are a coulple of pointers from Video Game Music Archive:
Quote
•The DS can play GBA games, but not GB/GBC games.

•The DS can not play multiplayer GBA games... there's no port to plug in a GBA link cable.

•When you buy a DS, try it out before you leave the store. In particular, look for any dead pixels on the two screens. If you see one, exchange it for a different DS.

•The battery only has a partial charge. You'll need to recharge it before any serious usage.
Edit
I forgot to mention, I am glad the DS is selling well. Nintendo is a good company and it looks like they needs the sales. That and even though this idea doesn't catch my interest, it is innovative. And not in that Super Mario Bros. is coming out again kinda way. Then again maybe innovative isn't what the videogame industry needs right now. . .

I kinda get what you're saying, Tonepoet, but a few of those reasons I don't see as real problems.

Quote
1.  I would be constanly distracted from one of the screens by the other.

The bottom screen acts mainly as a map for most games, so you'd only have to glance at it if you're stuck. I'm easily distracted too, but have no trouble ignoring the bottom screen if there's nothing spectacular going on. smile.gif

Quote
2. The touch screen would force me to take my hands off the controlls just to interact with it.

Like I said before, the wrist/thumbstrap included with it can be used in place of the stylus, and by doing so any interaction with the touchscreen can be done without truly taking your hands off the controls. Also, out of the two games I have, neither one requires any interaction with the touchscreen (besides playing mini-games in SM64DS, but those ONLY use the touchscreen). You are allowed to change the control setup to your liking, so you can use only the traditional D-pad and buttons if you want.

Quote
4. Gameboys have a bad habit of getting lost and having their only screen scratched. I don't expect the DS to be any different. See #3 for more detail.

I don't know about getting lost, but like the SP, the DS folds together when not in use, so it's pretty well-protected.

Quote

I'm assuming they mean before you play it for the first time, as the manual suggests. After recharging, however, there are quite a few hours of battery life, so it's not as though you have to recharge it between each lengthy playtime. You can also play while it's recharging (although that slows down the process), so it isn't an issue unless you're on the go.

The high price problem I can understand. Like with any system, though, there'll probably be a price drop in a year or so depending on sales. 'Til then I would recommend trying it out once you get the chance.

Speaking of which, does anyone know the best material to use to wipe dust off those screens without damaging them?

Like a microfiber material. Anything's that's not rough, like a napkin or a paper towel. Stuff you'd use to wipe off glasses.

I read a review today on IGN and they said that Nintendo DS has sold over 500,000 DS systems and 800,000 GBAs and GBA SPs in just the last week, meaning Nintendo is selling handheld systems more than any other company is selling any systems. Over 1.3 million systems in one week! Wow.

Nintendo better come up with some better game developement... because their platform sucks, and handhelds won't keep them afloat in the long run.

I think Neil made a topic about Nintendo's expected System that's suppossed to release around the time the PS3 and the Xbox Next will released (I think it was called the Revolution). I don't know much about it though, but they say it will be good.
