In my opinion I think they are both good systems. They both have their pros and Cons. they both have good games. and Squenix (I think) is devoloping bor both systems as well (I know Crystal Chronicles is going to be on DS). Also I was reading EGM and saw that someone made a joke about the DS and how it was big and CLunky because they are (it is a joke probaly) going to release a DS-SP for double of the Price.

While PSP will have better graphics then the DS, I still think the DS will be better. The reason is because Nintendo, in my opinion, has made better quality games then PS or X-Box. Besides the duel screens and touch screen is great and you can play Gameboy Advance games (which I own) on a DS.

Neal has a good point... but I can't help but pass partial judgment on them both and what little I know about them. In the end, the PSP does not look all that appealing to me while I will probably get a DS the day it comes out, so I voted DS. I've never been a big fan of playstation, other than the Final Fantasy series.
Edit
they both have backlight screens right?

The graphics power they boast about depends on light, so yes, they're backlit.

Ok... just watched the E3 video a couple of nights ago soI guess it would do some good to add a little bit of information about my choice.
The PSP, gained alot of points because they played a Spider Man 2 preview on it and it looked just like I was watching TV, and it also does not have a normal backlight screen. It has a LCD screen and takes a... I guess you could call it a watch battery (since I don't remember what they are actually called) so your battery life is alot longer than the normal GBA SP rechargeable battery, and they also mentioned the fact that they are going to try to cut the price down as much as possible but were aiming the product at 18-35 year old males since they have more interest in games with more disposable income. That was bout all I thought was good about the PSP (and by the way the LCD is a widescreen, incase it wasn't obvious in the prototype pics).
Ok, now to the DS. The Nintendo DS of course is popular because, 1: it can handle graphics more powerful than the N64. 2: it has two screens with one being a touch screen. They showed a demo of the new Metriod first person shooter game and let me tell you... I was very impressed. They guy showing off the DS showed that the top screen will be the map of the area you are in and the bottom screen will be the first person view. the great thing about this feature is that the bottom screen is the touch screen meaning if you get in a bind just tap your finger on what you want to shoot, and it will auto fire (which is going to be a feature on a lot of games like this to come). Pretty cool huh? Another thing I thought was neat, I noticed it is a big rumor that the DS system will not be backwards compatible. This is only a RUMOR... the representative for Nintendo assured everyone at E3 that it WILL be backwards compatible with all of the gameboy systems, only there will be two different ports instead of one (one for Game Boy and one for DS). As for multi player features (which weren't mentioned about the PSP by Sony) you can link 16 players together wirelessly (which we already all knew), but not only that, you can also link online with a friend in Japan or where ever else you might know someone far away with a DS, and I thought it was pretty neat that they showed some demos of games like Wario Ware Inc. that are nothing but touch screen throughout the entire game.
There was alot more about the DS but I don't remember all of it, but in short (or as short as I could make it) the DS wins for me hands down... the PSP didn't seem that interesting, but I 've heard that alot of people are questioning whether or not the PSP is going to be more like a PS1 or a PS2 graphic wise and the games I saw were unmistakeably more like the PS2 which was a plus but still not good enough to take cash out of my pocket before the DS does.

I think the PSP will be better due to it's graphics capability. The system will most likely get the full version of Gran Turismo 4 which is totally awesome, especially with the wide screen. The DS has worse graphics and won't have GT4. What will the DS have? A small handful of games that have to be specifically designed for the DS to accommodate the touch screen and the odd graphics capabilities (better than N64 and worse than GC). There will be no easy ports like there will be with the PSP. Oh yeah, and did I mention the PSP allows you to play GT4 anywhere you go? biggrin.gif You can do a race or two at work during breaks and lunch!

I'm for the DS because of it's originality and backwards compatibility.
Sony's version of backward compatibility with PSP is "here buy a new copy of the game" no thanks.
I like the wireless capabilities I've heard both have.
I like the power the PSP claims to be having.
I like the ease of programming PSP claims, apparently some game companies are planning on exclusively making games for the PSP and nothing else because it is so much easier than other systems.

That being said I still like the idea of the DS better because of the two screens. I have FFCC and it has made me realize that much more how good it can be to have two screens for a game. there is also a computer in my office with two monitors for our draftsman and he can do wondrous things on them so I expect similarly wondrous things for the DS.

there are things I like about both, but I think I'll go with the DS mainly for those reasons and secondly because I have kids so Nintendo just works better for my house.

Well, for those of you that are going for the DS, it is now up for reservation ($25 at gamestop). I don't know if the PSP is availabe yet but then again, I didn't ask because, well, I really don't care. I'll gte one when it comes out, maybe.

When it comes to handheld systems, Nintendo is like the Atlanta Braves. Until someone actually beats them, I'm going to have to keep picking them. While the PSP looks like the strongest contender to date, I kind of feel like Sony's been kind of stagnant lately with their video games. I personally would never consider a company other than Nintendo when it comes to handheld systems.

i've basically decided, if the DS is backwards compatible with the GBA like it's been said it is, i'd choose it. the PSP looks good, but i don't think it'll beat the DS. i mean, it uses Universal Media Disks...that only work on the PSP. real smart there Sony. XD

Battery life and backwards compatibility are my main concerns, since I know that both systems will have good games. The DS seems likely to be ahead on battery life due to the lesser power requirements of cartridges. (vs optical discs)

I will purchase them both if I can, but in the meantime I like this GBA SP just fine. (In fact I prefer the looks of the SP to the DS.)

Yeah... I agree. Maybe if Sony had got into the handheld console race a little earlier then they would be a little better off but since the DS will have a reason to be backwards compatible and the PSP won't then that may end up taking away alot of business from Sony. I for one don't understand why Sony didn't enter the hand held race a long time ago considering they faired so well with the PSX and the PS2. Well whatever... DS will still take Sony down.

I don't expect either system to be a colossal failure. They will both grab a pretty big chunk of the market share. Since Nintendo rules the handheld market my prediction is that the DS will hold 70% of the market share while the PSP takes 30%. The days of Nintendo's handheld monopoly are probably over since Sony is such a powerful company with great video game momentum. Nintendo has proven to be very vulnerable in the last decade.

Well, I have a Nintendo DS so I know I like Nintendo's system, but as I learn more on the PSP I become more and more disappointed with it. The most recent thing I learned is that the PSP will have an average battery life of 4 hours for game play and 5 hours for movie viewing, where as on the other hand the DS has about 10 hours on it's battery life. When I read this I thought "maybe it won't be so bad, maybe I can buy a spare abttery or two if they are priced as cheap as Nintendo priced the GBA SP's battery." I was wrong. Reviews say that a spare battery alone will cost up to $45 each. That's more than I pay for mosrt of my video games... tsk tsk. Anotherthing I was a little disappoibnted in is the fact that the Japanese release of the basic PSP 1000 model (just the console and charger) will release in Japan for over 19,000 Yen, totaling around $200 in US currency. If they release it here for that much then in my opinion that's rediculous. There's no way I'm paying over $200 (after tax) just to get the system and an AC adapter. I gotta say, Sony is already turning out to be a real disappointment in the handheld market and they don't even release in Japan until next month. I have no clue when they will release the PSP here but I don't think I'm gonna bother getting one of these.

Although I'm not really a fan of handheld systems (the screens are so damn small), I'm rooting for the DS, reasons being...

---The PSP, from what I hear, is hardware that Sony typically dishes out: shit. Apparently the screen (while wonderful) is very easily damaged/scratched, while the system is very easy to break. I put stock into these rumors, backed by history. Years back, the disc rotator on my old PlayStation pratically fell part one day. As for my PS2, I bought one of the "faulty" ones that gives you a damn "Disc Read Error" notice on ANY format of disc you put in (plus it freezes my MegaMan Anniversary constantly).

---The Dual Screen is obviously a great idea. Being able to access everything all at once is really nice.

---After their relationship's been soured (the second version of the PS2, the "Pulse", which releases soon, does not allow for the HDD (so much for FFXI) ), Square-Enix,from what I know, is publishing their games on the DS exclusively (as opposed to the PSP, not considering other systems). Obviously this is reason to get the DS.

---My friend brought the DS into programming last Tuesday, and I was amazed by the graphics it was able to push. The only downside is the design, which is a bit square, so it's mildly uncomfortable in the palms of your hands. I was surprised by this, since I thought Nintendo's always produced the best controllers since the SNES.

I'm pretty sure the last time a handheld had a completely flush screen, it was a Lynx. Have we not learned lessons from that experience?

Wasn't the UMD supposed to be Sony's proprietry media as the wave of the future or some crap like that? Come on people, nobody likes buying into a new media format until everyone has it. It's a disc, correct? It stiill needs moving parts. The last thing I want in a handheld game is for it to skip. I foresee fighting games coming out on PSP. The UMD is lauded as some magical format to hold both audio and video. Gee, I could've sworn that's what DVD could do. Even if the media catches on, it'll still get pirating b/c a UMD writer would also come about. Final verdict: UMD = poopy.

The PSP would really need a knockout game to convince me to get one.

I'm for the DS. The FFCC wasn't the best game because of the 4 GBA needed, so the DS should be able to fix that.
You may say that the PSP has better graphics, and that FFT was created there, but, where had Final Fantasy begun? Nintendo.

I second that... And am I the only one here that is outraged that the PSP is only going to have a battery with a 4 hour life span??!! Someone earlier said that the DS graphics are going to be better than PSP, I don't know about all that, but I do know that Sony has made another product that isn't worth what they're going to be asking for it.

The batteries are only 4 hours?! Hopefully the battery can be recharged, otherwise you'd need to buy new batteries each time. I can imagine what would happen if I got DS and my friend got PSP:

Me: How's your game doing? I'm on the next region in FFCC
Him: I had to stop playing (insert PSP game title) because the batteries died and are recharging. And I forgot to save so it's back toward the complicated maze.

Playstation games have been making worse graphics when both they and Nintendo make the same games.

Well the Sega Game Gear burned six double-As in like six hours so there has been at least one popular system with high battery consumption before. It's tolerable but not very desirable. Most people will probably end up plugging in the PSP to play anyway, defeating it's purpose. A car cigarette lighter adapter would be nice for long trips.

Yes, they use a lithium ion battery that is rechargeable. Unfortunately that kind of battery does not hold a charge for 500 charges like Nintendo's previous batteries. Oh, and they cost $50 to replace. I could almost buy a GBA (not SP) and have almost $10 left over for that price (seeing as how they are $39.95 now).

Edit
Ummm... What was I thinking?! The DS uses a Litium Ion bettery also. The PSP just doesn't hold a charge as well as the DS. Which doesn't make much sense to me because you would think with two screens that the DS would drain more battery having to support two different images, and more backlight output.

Yeah, I know i'm ressurecting a really old post here, but I bought a DS a few weeks ago and I'm totally in love with the thing. My only complaint is the control scheme. The buttons are somewhat small and an analog control would have been better than the D pad.

Still, I think the DS has a lot more potential than the psp with the touch screen idea. If you want to play a next gen console, buy a ps2 and play it there. If you want handheld fun, the DS seems to be the way to go. Also, using the stylus to play metroid prime gives you the amount of control a mouse gives you. It's a nice set up.

I just hope more games come out soon. Also, it would be nice to have a portable version of chrono trigger or FF6. Ah, a guy can dream.

With our luck, we'll proably get a port of Quest 64.
