Is the number of Coral pieces you need to feed the chest fixed or random?

To answer your last question, there are infinite peices. Every time you re-enter a section, the chests have been refilled. Don't know about the other two questions, tho.

You need to feed the chest 22 pieces of coral in one go. Also, the first time you fight your way through Ebot's Rock, the chest will never let you pass if you don't have Strago with you.
