TuneUp Utilities is a program made for cleaning your computer. This can clean your computer and find lots of Megs. But this is not always much nedeed. But use it one time each time you log on to your computer. Anyway you should download it! It is totally free to!
The following utilities on TuneUp is what YOU are going to use when you get it: go to Clean Up & Repair and use both of them and then go to Optimize and Improve and use the TuneUp system Optimizer. Then your PC should be pretty clean! This post has been edited by Chimp on 19th September 2004 16:14 -------------------- I am a Chimp! I am the newest n00b here! |

I have a tune up utility. It's called Windows Explorer and the delete key. An even better program is called "format c:". One thing I don't think most people do enough of is to clear the boot drive and reload it again. Once at least every 2 years is good, more if you're a virus magnet (ie visiting all kinds of random websites thus greatly increasing your chances of getting spy programs and viruses). My dad screws up his computer multiple times a year and tells me to fix it.

On the contrary, most people I've known are far to keen to say "Something's gone wrong... oh well, format, start from scratch". This is the option tech support lines tend to give you to save having to guide inexperienced users, and I fail to see how this is any more of an expert option than cleaning things up manually.
In fact, simply deleting things in Windows Explorer tends to cause more problems than it solves, because it doesn't clean up any Windows registry entries that may have been left behind. It's fine for your own personal data files, of course, but make sure you've used a program's own uninstall utility first before manually deleting anything it might leave behind. Nevertheless, I used to use various so-called tweaking and tuneup utilities, and I never found one that made much real difference or did anything you couldn't manually tweak otherwise, either in Windows itself or through registry editing based on online tips. Your mileage may vary. This post has been edited by Tiddles on 19th September 2004 19:48 |

I'm a former PC Tech, and while I try my best to help fix other people's machines without reinstalling, when it comes to my own situation, things are different. If it's a relatively simple problem I fix it, but if it's going to require a few hours of my own time to track down the problem, and an extensive Google search hasn't turned up any clues, then I would rather just do a reinstall of Windows. It saves me a LOT of effort and it takes just as long. It's not so much of an expert option as it is the easier, less labor intensive route in many situations.
Mind you this is what I do. As I said, I try to avoid doing that with my customers. They don't always make good backups, don't always have drivers on hand, and many don't even know how to install Windows. ![]() I'm glad that you are enjoying your TuneUp program! I hope it does a good job, because it's going to save some person in tech support from getting a head ache. ![]() This post has been edited by Endless Knight on 19th September 2004 21:22 |

I keep my computer, simple as that. every 3-5 months I'll format because I just accumulate things that I no longer use. If someone uses my computer and gets stupid crap on it, I ban them from it

Never heard of TuneUp until now...
Personally, I try to save my computer from a reformat as much as I can, and that means a lot of AdAware, defragging, and manual cleanup... only recently did I reformat after over two years of not doing that, and that's only 'cause I needed to combine two partitions (I wound up creating a whole new partition system ![]() But mostly, I just run a lot of antivirus and spyware removal stuff and do a lot of defragging and manual cleanup, and then use some tools to clean up the registry. Worked fine for me up 'til now. =) -------------------- ~Status Report~ * Completed... Dragon's Head * Completed... Soldiers of the Empire: Disciples (release pending) * In Progress/Undecided... You should use it anyway. It is easy to use, and it discovers lots of Megws that can be recovered!
