First off, if you didn't see the title, this isn't to discuss his identity.
Anyway. Can someone please explain to me with a good response, why the hell so many people consider Gogo so worthless? I mean, c'mon people, this is quite possibly one of the most versatile characters ever. The only downside I can really see to him is the lack of ability to equip espers, which means there is no stat manipulation. But even then, he's still a pretty krad character. Equip him with a Merit Award to get some good results. But, what i'm saying is, why so much hatred? A lot of what I hear is "He's a copycat that does everything halfass." So you lose about 1000 damage with bumrush, big deal. Mimic is his only natural command, yeah. And then there's some abilities on his choice list that are blacked out. But you fix that with a Merit Award. And you've got to admit, the ability to put him in a party full of spell casters, give him the "Magic" ability, and have him know every spell the others do is pretty nifty. But let me go one step further into his versatility. You can actually make Gogo the closest thing to an official dragoon in the game. And, I know i've said this before, but I don't think it's getting through to some people. And I know a ton of you loved Kain. So, here we go. Just ONE of many possible set ups to make Gogo awesome. Right Hand: Spear of your choosing. Left Hand: Aegis Shield or Paladin Shield Head: Genji Helmet Body: Force Armor Relic 1: Merit Award Relic 2: Dragoon Boots Now maybe there are better combinations for battle gear, i'm sure there probably are. But, anyway. Next we mess with his Commands to make them look something like. Mimic Fight Magic Item Now I know it looks a little weird at first, but bare with me. Mimic can easily act as a makeshift fight. Hell, his default move with it is to fight if he is the first to go in a battle. Fight becomes Jump. And there you go. Gogo is just about as close to an official dragoon as you can get. Well, sorry for my little rant, but yeah, you get my point, right? -------------------- This one time I punched a bear in the forehead TO DEATH! I still have the scars on my chest. That is a good question, I never understood why there was so much loathing for Gogo as well. He one of my favorite characters, and when I get him is always in my party.
I do one of two things with Gogo, I give him sketch and a fake mustache to control enemies so I can steal the pants of them, or I give it a sneak ring to steal as well. It usually also has Blitz, Magic, and Item (I believe Item, but I could be wrong). I also use Marvel shoes, which I love! Nothing special in the equipment, just optimize unless there are special circumstances. It usually Controls, Bum Rushs, Steals, or uses magic anyway. So the weapon doesn't really matter. I also find Gogo handy becuase even though you can choose three skills, Gogo can still mimic anyone! Wham blam Ultima x 4, Cat scratch frenzy, etc etc etc. -------------------- "Look at me! Gogo became one of my best fighters when I got him/her, I mean, s/he can use any attack at all, they really needed a secret Gogo in FF9.

I really have no idea why people don't like Gogo. Perhaps they don't like him because they can't determine his gender and it upsets them inside........or maybe they just haven't tried using him.
Hopefully they'll start to notice that others actually do use him and use him quite well and then they'll try |

Quote (Kane @ 4th September 2004 12:53) I really have no idea why people don't like Gogo. Perhaps they don't like him because they can't determine his gender and it upsets them inside........or maybe they just haven't tried using him. A lot of people define a character, not only by what they say and look like but by what they do. What a character does, gives them personality and well... Gogo can do just about everything and so he/she's not quite as defined as the majority of the other characters. Gogo also lacks the background history that a good deal of the other characters had. I'm not saying that Gogo isn't interesting or powerful, just that Gogo is lacking in certain areas, areas which some people find important. EK, maybe that's why some like him? His lack of background can compensate as a mysterious background, couldn't it? Some people may not like not knowing background, so I understand where you're coming from.

Quote (Mu the Squirrel @ 4th September 2004 11:41) I can think of no reason at all why s/he'd be considered a poor character, mebbe the people who say it just never realised how to set skills. ^^ Ya know, that may be it (or one of the bigger reasons). The first several times I played through I never once glanced over Gogo's skills 'n' stuff in the menu. I used him/her for, like, two battles, cringed at the subpar mime abilities, and then vowed never to use him/her again. Get this: it wasn't until three or four years ago that I actually discovered Gogo could use other characters' skills in addition to mimicking them. Now Gogo's always one of my most prized party members. Square had a good reason for hiding him/her as well as they did; Gogo's a freakin' powerhouse! When it comes to character depth/background, I'll admit Gogo's definitely the worst. However, in terms of battle strengths and versatility, he's/she's one of the best. Quote (Glenn Magus Harvey) For (probably not) the last time, Gogo kicks arse. Sure, he can't do a Bum Rush as well as Sabin can, or GrandTrain as well as Strago can, but as someone said before, "two Bum Rushes are better than one". So what if Sabin's Bum Rush does 6700 damage but Gogo's only does 5600? It's still a huge frickin' chunk of damage. And--what other character can choose between Bum Rush, GrandTrain, and Ultima? There's a good reason why I think Gogo is one of the most powerful characters on my team. Somehow, I foresaw that that wouldn't be the last time I said that. ![]() -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Quote (Zero Hawk) Can someone please explain to me with a good response, why the hell so many people consider Gogo so worthless? I mean, c'mon people, this is quite possibly one of the most versatile characters ever. That doesn't mean he's not worthless. All the other characters do his attacks better, and there's no point in the game where Gogo's extra versatility really becomes a great asset. So he can have the magic command and have knowledge of the spells learned by up to three other characters. I can see this as being a good thing early in the WoR when good spells like Life 2 and the Tritoch spells are hard to come by. But once those three characters know all spells and that fourth slot taken by Gogo could have been another character who knows all spells, where's the advantage? Ok so let's forget magic and say that Gogo has three character abilities. In what situation would you strategically choose Blitz over Lore, or Rage over Blitz? Could it be for a certain elemental attack perhaps? Late in the game you should have enough powerhouse physical attackers to not have to worry about elementals. If you do have to worry about elementals, everyone has the magic command to cast bolt, ice, fire, pearl, wind, poison and earth elemental attacks. The only thing missing is a water elemental attack. Is it good to use Gogo because of a shortage of powerful physical attacks, making the whole "wow two Bum Rushes!!" statement a logical one? You have Gau's Catscratch, Sabin's Bum Rush, the Genji Glove & Offering combo, Strago's Grandtrain, Cyan's Quadra Slice, Umaro's attacks and to a lesser degree Edgar's Chainsaw. What do you need two Bum Rushes for? There are many other comparable attacks. Plus Gogo can't even do a good Bum Rush, making those comparable attacks superior. Again, where's the advantage? Quote (Zero Hawk) The only downside I can really see to him is the lack of ability to equip espers, which means there is no stat manipulation. But even then, he's still a pretty krad character. Equip him with a Merit Award to get some good results. So he's a krad character because he can have good results with the Merit Award? Almost every character can have good results with the Merit Award. No stat manipulation is Gogo's only real weak point, but it's a huge weak point... nothing you can just ignore. Late in the game a character's stats determine so much. Try raising a character to level 99 without stat boosts and have along a character at level 99 with the stat boosts. You will see a huge difference in performance, like night and day. The stat boosted character will be running circles around the unboosted character. With Gogo it's even worse because his stats start out worse than the starting stats of the average character. What a mess. Even if you only train your characters up to the mid-40's for the end of the game, that's still what, 25 stat boosts for most of your characters? You typically get espers when your characters are near level 20. -------------------- FFXI (Siren server) Tauu the Windurstian Tarutaru! White Mage & Paladin |
