Just give me a basic rundown of your thoughts on this class, backed by evidence of course. I'm just interested to know what all of you frequenting FFT posters think about some of the classes. There will be more of these "Thoughts" threads to come.

I'll chime in as soon as this thread gets going with a few posts.

Ok, seeing as how the threzd got going and I don't want to double-post, here goes.

Thieves are a nice addition to the Job bench...early on, that is. Their ability to steal items that normally wouldn't be available for a while, i.e. Black Costume, become available. Comboed with a Ninja, the Thief's Steal skill becomes so much better seeing as how Steal is based on speed, and Ninjas have the best speed in the game. The one thing that hurt the class was it's inability to stay alive for long periods of time in battle. The Job's lack of damage contributes widely, also.

Why not chime in now? You started the thread, you must have some thoughts in mind.

I appreciate thieves a lot more now than I used to, except for the fact that they're rather useless except for stealing. And unless you're overleveled, you'll find that most of the battles where stealing is useful (i.e. story battles), you need all your characters to mount an effective defense. You can't afford to use a character to steal, because they'll be out of the attack and likely quickly killed unless you have their defense bulked up.

But as an experience builder, thievery is good, and you can get some decent items out of it. So that much I like.

I don't particularly like thieves. They are weak. However, I find steal to be pretty useful in that you can get some nice equipment early on in the game (I have had Black Costumes in the beginning of Chapter 2). Also, steal heart is a useful ability for the pesky monsters you'll run into.

I definitely like thieves. I tend to get a thief early on with a generic purchased from the soldier office with a specific zodiac sign in mind so I'll get an extra few percentage points when stealing from Elmdor. It's a lot of work, but that's one of the most important things you can do with a thief.

I like thieves, They tend to get useless towards the end of the game but they've always been my favorite class...I want thier outfit. I don't steal much, unless I change my Job into something else, most of the time a lancer. Stealing in my idea, is a lot better than Break...but...It has a lower percentage of making contact...

I consider the thieves to be jacks-of-all-trades. They definately excel in different situations, whether it be catching thrown items, defending as a counter, poaching, and, of course, stealing. They have some good physical evade, also.

Despite all their good qualities, I consider theives to be in the same boat as priests and samurai--the potential their skills have can be achieved easier on other classes. I like thieves but would never have a permanent thief character in my party for those reasons above and that they have weak weapon and armor equips, also.

Outsource the skills, I say.

The thief is definetely a job where all my characters spend some time at. Seeing that my usual team through most of my games consists in Ramza and four generic soldiers (two fighters type and two magician type), I always have my female fighter become a thief ASAP, which generally means she's a good thief for the story battle at Dorter.

As a skillset, Steal is very useful throughout the course of the game. In particular, using a female thief can be very handy in story battles, since most fighters are male and thus subject to Steal Heart. Plus, the opponents almost always have one or two equipment better than yours, so it can be a great asset to strip them. As an added bonus, the Thief carry some of the most useful Support, Reaction and Movement ability with Move + 2, Secret Hunt and Catch.

However, and like most of the previous posters, I generally prefer to use Steal as a second skillset : the Thief is too weak and far too easy to dispose of. In all, the Thief is generally a job where all my fighters spend some time in (while the magicians only get the Move + 2 and Catch abilities), but it's not a "final" job.

hmmmmmmmmmm. can't say thieves are particularly useful on their own. they have a wonderful ability set (move+2, jump+2 for certain story battles, poach (!), and catch -- the latter two which let you get some of the best items in the game otherwise unattainable or undoubleable), but they are simple way too weak to be a strategic part of a tactical offence or defence. certainly for certain story battles (elmdor comes to mind) and certain random battles (stealing yoichi bow?), steal is a valuable asset, but, like you said, it's much better when applied to a ninja as secondary action ability.

and while samurai may suck, draw out is a wonderful action ability set that warrants their usage in some particularly difficult battles where your team may benefit from an early all-haste or all-wall.
