OK, so my brother is playing FFT. He is leveling in Grog Hill. After a couple of hard-fought battles, I hear the familiar sound of battle. And then, with a heart-stopping gasp from my brother, I stop typing on the computer. I turn to see what the sudden release of carbon dioxide is all about. On the screen of my 13' TV are ten monks -- ten! All of them are between the levels forty and fifty. My brother's party runs eagerly into battle. Agrias, Arthur (Ramza) the Monk, Musashi the Archer, Abraham the Samurai, and Sabateini the Ninja are all roughly level forty.

One Monk falls to Sabateini's blade. Agrias dishes out a hearty helping of Stasis Sword, silencing one of the Monks. The Ninja then falls to one of the Monks. Arthur's Hamedo kicks in, and a Monk falls to his fists of fury. After a few enemy attacks, Abraham dies triumphantly. The Monks are now massing Musashi the brave Archer, who falls to the ground from a fist wound.

I now fear the outcome of this battle. With three Monks dead, my brother continues to fight. Agrias releases another Stasis Sword, silencing two Monks and killing another. Sadly, Arthur falls to the Wave Fist of one of the enemy Monks. With only Agrias left, a Monk revives one of his fellow men.

With one final blow, Zincus annihilates an injured Agrias.

Has anyone ever seen a battle like this? I mean with the ten Monks. I'd be interested to hear your replies. By the way, how was my report? Did you like it? tongue.gif

Ahh yes, the infamous monk battle at Grog Hill. Well, if you're wondering how you get there, it's the secret battle of that location and is only able to be seen by entering Grog Hill from Lesalia. Entering from Yardow or Dogoula Pass won't trigger it.

If you want a short tip, if you break a monk's armor and then kill it, he won't be revived. The AI's priority doesn't seem to feel that reviving a crappy monk will do anything for the battle, so it'll avoid it. Meliadoul is good for this (Orlandu makes it less challenging). I remember the first time I fought there too and I got annihilated about as fast as you did. Six out of the seven monk abilities rely on PA, so getting a Dancer with Polka Polka away from the fray can increase your chances of surviving by quite a lot.

It's one of my favorite secret battles when compared to boring ones like a few people appearing in Fovoham Plains or the Knight/Bull Demon battle in Zeklaus.

Remember, my brother fought this battle. His skill does not compare to mine. His strategy is to run in and attack the closest person, tossing away the idea of healing anyone. I didn't know this was a secret battle, however! Thanks for the information. I remember him coming from Lesalia when he fought that battle. I'll try next time to fight them.

By the way, thanks for the compliment!

I really dug the play-by-play, man. Kept me on the edge of my seat. I was thinking Agrias was going to be the sole survivor there for a second. happy.gif

The Grog Hill Monk battle is definitely a pisser...... just wait till you hit the all-Ninja team in the Araguay Woods.

When it comes to deciding if monks or ninja are more difficult, I'll always go with monks. They can revive, heal, attack, have Martial Arts, and don't throw crappy items like balls and shurikens when they're level ninety or below.

Also, all locations that you can normally fight on have a secret battle. For instance, the secret battle of Mandalia Plains is a bunch of Dragons and Blue Dragons fighting against your party, but you'll never get into the battle unless you enter the location from the Thieves' Fort. Just a little tidbit, I guess.

Like your Arthur character, Hamedo is a good idea for people who are weaponless and don't have much range. You might have to watch out for Secret Fist though, although I'm sure that won't occur much. You could try and bring six of your own monks into battle if you wanted to and show 'em the truth in the power-in-numbers theory. cool.gif

The Monks appear in more numbers, but the Ninjas always give me more trouble b/c the second swing in their two-swrods attack always hits me. My teams usually lack in speed, so they close the gap and attack quicker than mine.

The Monks, unless you have Orlando with Lightning Stab or a party where you are specifically looking for them, are truly brutal though. If I go hunting for them, I usually have at least two characters with Punch Art, for the Revive and Chakra. I stay in the flats with the healers in the middle, where they can affect everybody on my squad. If I'm using Mustadio, he's a Chemist.... so I'm blasting the Monks from a distance and I have his items to heal/revive too. Distance attacks are a must. It's very hard to go toe-to-toe with the horde unless you can soften them up first. They *usually* won't Chakra themselves unless critical. Multiple-hit attacks are excellent, as well. Draw Out and Holy Sword and magic come to mind.

Only problem with the report is that Stasis Sword doesn't use silence. Other than that, fabulous.

Yeah, sorry about that Neal, my brother was attacking so fast I didn't have time to remember the name of the attack. It's been ages since I've played FFT. It was Lightning Stab. pinch.gif Anyways, thanks for the comments on the report. I may do a few more. Would that go into Site Submissions?

No, just in the game section, unless you wanted to make it a fanfic of sorts.

gee, talk about a bunch of "all job group challange"
like the Ninjas in the woods as well as the archers,
The Archers are kind of hard since they had those crossbows.
but the Ninjas are VERY hard since they kept tossing stuff at my party and I didn't have "catch" equiped.

I tried to get this rare battle too, for the same reasons you are. Check the link below to find your answer.

If you're getting stuff you don't want, don't prolong the battle. End it and then try to get the fight again. They will throw Ultimate Javelin's, Chirijiraiden's, Chaos Blades.... all kinds of good stuff.

What a ninja will throw depends on his level, and what ability he's equiped with : if you want on to throw a Javelin II at you, you can only hope that one of them will be equiped with the Lance throw ability.

At some point, when the ninjas have a high level, then all the ninjas in the battle will throw the highest weapon available in each weapon category. This means that you can save yourself a pretty good time by not going for the correct poaches : I provided a good list in the other thread.

Yeah, the friendly ninja make any unique weapon in abundance. I'd rather spend eighty-eight hours trying to get one Masamune than trying to dupe 'em, myself. If I remember right, you have to get a level 92 female ninja to get Masamunes, and those conditions are fairly hard to find.

Also, unless the ninjas are above level ninety, all you're going to get is balls and shurikens. Talk about holding out, eh?

I can't stand cheating at any game, let alone my favorite one. I think it's an unsaid code of honor to not dupe rare weapons, especially when it's possible to get more elsewhere albeit with a little bit of luck and patience.

omg, I just now beat the monks on my first try, and one of them was higher level than ramza. Then again, it seemed like they were going easy on me, what with not reviveing or anything. Just think, had they attacked en masse, I would have been massacred.

A few more details on the positons of the people could've been used, but other than that a very good report.

I'm wondering what the other secret battles are and how to get them. I encountered the Monk battle (only my Squire survived but I was fast enough to keep the rest from turning to crystals) and the Dragon battle.
