Is this map legit? I notice two things I've never really seen in the game, that I remember... First, the pathway from Goug to Warjilis, going through the water. Also, above the Deep Dungeon, the location in the middle of the water there...

Are these things that I just don't remember, or are they accidental/jokes on the part of the person who made the map?

The waterway is legit; you use it in Chapter 2. I've never seen the second dot above Deep Dungeon's location, though.

I remembered the waterway shortly after posting, comicly... But, I don't think the dot above the Deep Dungeon was there... I think that's either an error or a hoax, or something of the sort.

I'd probably rack up that lone dot as an error in placing the real Deep Dungeon. They're both in the same relative location, I suppose. =/

Is it just me..... or does Ivalice resemble Europe, with Australia right below? And that language on the map.... looks almost Russian to me.

Heh... It does look a lot like Europe... And I do see what you meant by australia! I wonder if it was intentional. And I wish we knew how to translate the things on the map, if it is really done as a language... It would be interesting to know what the map had listed on it...

Maybe "Here there be monsters"... Then they realized that everywhere there be monsters!

Edit: Hey, here's something interesting...

This map's in english, and most of that text is covered here... And, if you compare the text in the game, you can actually see what it says, somewhat...

Edit 2: Heh... Was sitting there, looking at stuff, and decieded to do it myself... Here's the map.

This is a medieval fantasy game whose story mirrors the corruption of the Catholic church just before the Reformation. Intentional? I wonder.

biggrin.gif True! I suppose it's made to resemble Europe, so that it strikes that cord. Though, it is only a cursory resemblance... It's not like they traced a map, heh.

I always though Ivalice resembled the Portugal/Spain region of Europe, which was where the Inquisition was based. There are noticible landshapes that would give off the description of the world globe though, like where India and the Bering Strait would be. Romanda could even be Greenland.

I do think that Ivalice was supposed to be a mirror of the catholcism schism (rhyme) that happened centuries ago. The game have deeply religious roots, and knowing that it could be based off actual events makes the game that much more realistic.

Looking at the map again, I started wondering... Is the North Loe Sea ever mentioned in the game, at all, other than the map? Is that even accurate for the translation? Basicly, I just compared it to the other instances of the symbols, coupled with what those translations were...

Nope, the North Loe Sea is never mentioned, not even as a vague allusion in the propositions. It's pretty far away from Ivalice, so you'd expect it to be mentioned in one of the first bar rumors, "The Fifty Year War", but it's not, even though it was near the war zone.

The Bugross sea is mentioned as a whole but not any of the directional parts. Remember Ramza telling Alma to throw the holy stone into the Bugross Sea if he gets captured?

I can't remember anything about the Black Coral Sea, actually, but I'm guessing it was referenced to as much as the North Loe Sea. Some of the Warjilis and Goug propositions could have mentioned them, but not as extensively as to identify it as anything but a place where ships go, etc.

Heh, the translated map is actually kind of fun to look at. Thanks for taking the time to put that together, Darkfox.

biggrin.gif No problem. This game is somewhat of an obession for me - I've been wondering what those things on the map said for a long time, and just recently pieced together that they could be translated at all... I'd still like to know if my translation of "North Loe Sea" was right, but that will require someone coming by that knows what language the text is in.

And, actually, part of the way I got the Bugross Sea was from the Deep Dungeon, it's mentioned when you hit select on the location...

My memory is fuzzy.... but isn't the deep dungeon below a lighthouse? Can't seem to remember.

Anyway, I don't think the map language is a "real" language, so that kinda blows the interpreting idea out of the water..... *unless* one of the FFT developers ever were to wander in here. (how friggin cool would that be?!?)

Well, it holds up as an alphabet, in the least. The words I was looking at on it do have letters that correspond... And you can even see that the map says some things, if you look carefully. For instance, look at West and East Bugross Sea... You can see the text there, where it would translate to West or East Bugross Ocean... Or, at the North Loe Sea, and the Black Coral Sea. You can see the word Sea in those... I think it may just be an altered version of our alphabet, but it's possible that it's something else entirely. I'm not a language expert, so, I can't really determine it...

And yes, the Deep Dungeon is below an old lighthouse.

Is this where you found the translated map? I looked everywhere for info on the language, but haven't turned up anything yet.

Edit
I found the translated map on a few other sites after I searched some more, including the untranslated map with the errant dot in the sea. Most interesting.

I don't remember exactly where I found it... I think I came across it on a couple of websites, and just saved it as a novelty. That dot in the ocean still bothers me... I wonder why it's there... Maybe someone put it there by accident, or maybe it was a hoax?

I'm thinking maybe it's a battle site that was never used in the actual game.....

Or a bug that popped up when the person did the map...

Or, it could just be BS. pinch.gif

I seem to remember that you can actually make that dot appear in game with the debugging codes, but I could be way off on that. Heck, I don't even remember the debugging code... but that's for another topic.
