Who, in your opinion, has the saddest past/story in FF3/6? It can be a playable charecter or an NPC charecter. I would have made this a poll, but there are just too many people to choose from.

I feel that many characters in FF3/6 have tragic pasts, but I'd have to go for Locke because he feels responsible for Rachel's death when it wasn't his fault, and he's been carrying this burden for years.

Let's not forget Atma, people. Besides most likely having a really hard time finding a date, he's had an *eternity* to ponder the meaning of things. There are few things that scare me as much as the concept of eternity applied to a life.

I forgot that... or how about those poor monster-in-a-box? I mean, how long have they been there? It my not be an eternity, but wow... it may feel like it... especially for those that you only find in the WoR, a whole year after the floating continent...
Seriously though, I would have to say Cyan. Sure Locke's story was tragic and ironic, but at least he has had time to get over it. Racheal still lived, if only for a year and who knows... she may have died anyway. But to lose your son, wife, friends, home, and everything you knew to a coward who didn't have the courage to fight clean (kind of like the Trade Towers), what would you call it? Cyan's story touched me the most too. Second place goes to Gau. He's so different from everyone else and had to survive on his own in the wild. That's rough all the way around.

I'd say Kefka had a sad story. People fail to notice that Kefka obviously had a hard life. Working for an emperor he hated, then there was Leo, and being driven insane becaus of magic.

Edgar and Sabin had a sad story, what with them being orphans during the game. But I gotta go with Locke.

I simply had to register *just* for this thread. I personally think Shadow's story is the saddest. I mean,
Possible spoilers: highlight to view When he and Baram were on the run and Baram was too injured to go on, Baram asked shadow to kill him before their pursuers caught up to him and tortured him. Could you imagine what that would do to a guy? So many feelings of guilt locked up inside for years. |

On the contrary, I consider it very tragic that someone would destroy all trace of their emotions and become an assassin, with only their haunting dreams to remind them of their past life.

*Spoilers ahead* The following is my interpretation of the events of FF6 which I present only as one person's view.
I think that the saddest story is that of Shadow. To me, it seemed that the theme of FF6 was the unconquerable human spirit; each character had a devastating event in their life, yet none of them let it destroy them. Even the world in general had a cataclysm to get over, but it rose up and chose to keep living. In the end, neither a military empire, three powerful gods, nor the all-powerful personification of chaos and hate, could kill the human spirit. When all those things pass away at the end of the game, Terra is told that she will survive if her human side clings strongly enough to something. However, Clyde runs from his past, and commits a sort of suicide by leaving behind all traces of who he was, becoming Shadow. Shadow acts to cast a contrasting image, to show what becomes of the spirit if it does not at all times chose to press on and continue living and hoping. When Shadow offers Terra (on the boat) the option of burying her emotions, of letting herself go numb, he is offering her the fundamental choice every one of the main characters faces at some point in the game. In the final scenes, when everyone is escaping to the airship, Shadow would run the risk of cementing the ties of loyalty and friendship with the other characters which have been forming throughout their journey together. Instead of reviving those old emotions, a side of himself he has attempted to destroy, he runs away a final time. His last words often confuse players, who say that he is confronting his past, or some such thing, but they most likely portray the confused feelings of a person despairing. While all those on the airship are celebrating the triumph of hope, Shadow is alone in despair and dies that way. Shadow's story is the saddest because he lets despair win the battle for his spirit. My favorite story is that of Setzer. Rather than sulking in his past, Setzer enjoys the life he has. This is not to say that he is unaffected by the death of his friend; he remembers and is true to her memory throughout... he just doesn't despair about it. Setzer lives a full life, in spite of and because of his past. He remembers, and moves on. This post has been edited by Iain Peregrine on 29th July 2004 15:22 |

I have to say that, though every char has quite a storyline, Celes' was the only one that actually caused me to cry at one point (suicide jump).

Hmmm... I'd agree with Wind God Gau, that the only time I cried was at Celes's suicide jump, however, I found the story of the wounded soldier in Mobliz the saddest. All he wanted before he died was to be with Lola, and he never got to. And if you ask me, Lola doesn't seem that sad when Cyan breaks the news to her that her loving, devoted boyfriend is dead. Poor Guy.

Locke's story was sad, and Celes' suicidal tendencies were a little disturbing, but the saddest part for me was the business with the soldier from Maranda. That's the only part that really makes me pout.

There're a lot of very-well-crafted sad moments in here--Locke and Rachel, Setzer and Daryl, Terra's past, Leo's fate, Lola and her boyfriend, Gau's backstory, Celes's past, etc. etc. etc., but the one that brought tears to my eyes--which doesn't happen often at all--was Cyan's. Cyan lost practically everything--his son, his wife, his king, his kingdom, and nearly his friends and his sanity--but he still didn't give up. Cyan remains one of my all-time favorite FF characters.

I would have to say Cyan. He was thrust into this misadventure immediately after losing his family and home. And, just after, he got to go through that pain again when he was just inches from his wife and son on the train.
I found it strange how he tried to find solace in writing those letters to the soldier's girlfriend. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

Here's a vote for Shadow. I never really liked his character from a fighting standpoint, but his story is pretty fascinating. The fact that he's killed his emotions is the saddest part, in a sense. That idea alone is bad enough.

Cyan for me. His whole focus on the honour of his family and kingdom, the fact that he has to watch it be stripped from him due to the foulest of dishonours, and his journey to come to grips with what he has lost and what he has left were extremely touching. That, and his theme perfectly complimented his story and almost brought tears to my eyes during his cutscenes.

Talking about the most emotional moments in the story: one of my ALL-TIME favorites (and the one which keeps a certain character forever out of the running for saddest story) is when Strago finally catches the Hidon. An entire life's ambition, fufilled in a moment. Whew! what a rush. And about the Hidon's attack....
