Are you sure you know what the word "literally" means?

Some of these responses seem more intolerant than the actions of any Youth Pastor, Priest, etc. I've ever met.

You have to consider who you're asking here. You went to the internet for a question relating to religion. You went to a site devoted to the object in question. This kind of makes me question if this is actually happening or you came just to stir up trouble (or worse - both).

I stick to my original suggestion. Examine your life and how much influence FF and God each have (and how much you want each to have).

4. I'd say it's not necessarily a bad thing if FF takes God out of your life. I have oodles of FF and not a drop of God in mine, and I'm uber happy like this

That's not a good thing to suggest to an already religious person. Are you suggesting he drops his faith?

No. I'm suggesting that he reassess it. Though FF is not my belief system (duh) a conflict between your current religion and something else that's beneficial in your life is a conflict that can support the idea of changing your religion.

... and by the way, everyone is "already religious" because everyone has beliefs, and there's nothing wrong with my explaining that I'm happy without God.

I see what you're saying, but even if I worshipped toilet paper, I'd still say that my religion is a bit more important than a video game. Hell, a whole lot of things are more important than video games. If anything, if he does decide to do something as drastic as change his belief system, I think he should have more reason to change it than just a video game. Hell, even if I was atheist (not knocking any here) I'd still put the fact that I didn't worship anything on a higher rung than my like for video games. Video games are fun, yes indeedy, but they alone shouldn't make someone totally change their faith, or anything else important.

Dude, you're misinterpretting my post. I was saying that the conflict between the game and religion can help build a case against the religion. I wasn't implying that it was a stand alone defeater for Christianity (remember how I used the word "support" in my last post).

My point was more aimed at the fact that I'm perfectly fine without God and with playing FF, so it might not be bad to not have God in your life since it works great for me.

...and Tidu-who, I am doing just fine on air and water. tongue.gif

Look, very frankly, do not listen to your pastor. It's evident, perfectly clear that FF does not contain any demons and that he is exaggerating the whole thing by more than a bit. You are an independent person and you don't need to be told that something must be burnt because that person believes it should. He has no authority over you, and the church in general does not either. You are a believer in God, so worship God. I have a problem with the church because of things like this, they take the liberty of interpreting things in a general and biased way. Even if they personally interpret something, they often still come to the same interpretations because of the way they are instructed, and this is the important part. They are, to put it bluntly, "blinded" by their faith.

All of this is just to say, go with your gut instinct. The guy just wants to make sure that you stay devoted to God and that you don't lose sight of what is important. However, don't take his word literally. The demons are "real" in that many people are addicted to video games and lose sight of anything and everything else in life. The demons are not REAL. Burning your games will serve no physical purpose. It will only weaken you and hurt you in the long run, because you are giving up your independence for another man's word. Stand strong and decide what is right. I think you can get by without burning your games. I don't know how much you play or how much it deters you from reality, but it doesn't seem major, and moderation is key.

of course its a bit of an exageration. I just have no motivation to persue religion any more.

back to topic
The only religion i know of that actively is against magic or anything else magical is christianity, are there any others?

there are demons in FF but they are always at the recieving end of your sword(the pointy stabbity part)

Very well put. Easily the best advice so far.

Actually, Christianity is plainly founded on magic. You guys all know that, but maybe never realized the word "magic" applies. Ya' know - parting the Red Sea, a few loaves of bread turning into hundreds. God actually summoned both Leviathan and Behemoth so Job could see them. ...um, doesn't that sound a tad FF?

This isn't off topic I'm thinking. Christianity does include magic, so there's another case against GC's pastor.

Job? In the Bible? Never heard of it?

Quote
The issue in the book of Job
Scholars argue that the book is a vindication of the justice and goodness of God. Although these divine characteristics are seen in the story, its purpose may more directly demonstrate integrity. Job is blameless and upright at the beginning and, although discouraged, nothing is able to move him. He proclaimed, "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him." (13:15). Satan was allowed to test Job and was unsuccessful. We know this but Job didn't. So the issue of the integrity of Job demonstrates the greater truth of the integrity of God Himself. As trials came to God's children through the ages, Satan's claims would be broken, case by case, as they prayed for the the power to overcome through the merits of the slain lamb.

yo geuss what, i found out that the pastor does have some basis in his claims, due to the fact that FF uses many names of demons in christianity for summons in FF, such as Adramelech and Leviathan

Edit
I would like to thank the caves of narshe crew for remembering my birthday, thanks(i know it's probably automatic, but it's nice anyways)

Personally, i do believe in demons...and angels...and spiritual warfare. Maybe it helps that im christian but i honestly believe that angels in demons are battling for souls in both subtle and not-so-subtle ways...if anyone is interested in that sort of thing then they should read "piercing the darkness". I forget the author's name but it's not really that important. Anyway, you can't say their aren't demons in ff (although most references are the differing mythologies including norse, roman, and oriental). And there are several other religions that are based on the same entity (christianity, Islam, Judaism(sp)) and i'd assume that since they all worship the same entity that they all have the same "enemies".
whats more this topic has almost completely been unraveled...and should be renamed or moved (although like regular conversation, message board topics tend to evolve into other subjects). As for AL you'd be surprised to find out just how interesting the stories in the bible can be (at a younger age, a lot of the bible is censored or read in excerpts to reinforce the goodness of it when in actuality there are parts that depict monsters, violence, etc.).

I don't think there has been a post in the last eight or so that is actually relevant to GamblingCat's topic here. Maybe I'll come back later and split the off-topic stuff into its own topic, but for now, closed.
