i think 7 was definitely the most emotionally involving FF game. theres a lot of stuff going on in it that bears mentioning, so ill do a top 5:

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
aeris getting killed is NOT on this list. i hated her. plus, that moment was ruined for me by someone anyway, so there was no shock value in it for me.

5- lucretia being sephiroths mother
4- discovering vincent's past and connection to hojo/sephiroth
3- learning about jenova's true origins and the fate of the ancients
2- discovering clouds past and his original purpose
1- understanding why clouds memories seemed false when they werent (the burning of nibelheim left a plot point that people often fail to understand, and they think its a huge plot hole)

probably the best game ever made, storywise.

Aeris's storyline in VII is definitely the best final fantasy moment, and it would have been even more shocking if some idiot hadn't decided to put a screen shot of it on the back of the ( platinum version) game case!

Although since that storyline i feel that square haven't been trying too hard in the plot twist stakes, e.g if there's something big that can float/fly it will always crash spectacularly into the earth
see the following for more examples http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html

1. Aeris dies in FF7 and Yuffie crying over it. (she's kind of cute when she cries like that)
2. Elko's Phoenix summon helped my party when they are all killed.
3. FF9 had a giant ball named Ozma who is the game's strongest monster.
4. FFT Gafgarion turned against me in a battle (bastard! betray me and you will die)
5. Algus: same goes for Gafgarion
6. FFT and Breath of fire 2 had people turning into monsters.
for me, first it was some stupied "god" that turn people into monsters (BoF) and then Holy stones turning people into monsters (FFT)

and that is just about it.

I think the most shocking event was the destruction of the world of balance in FF6. One of the most moving moments for me however was at the end of FF6 when Interceptor doesn't understand why Shadow is forcing him to leave without him. The end of the world doesn't even make me blink anymore, but tragic moments like those still hit me everytime.

like this is something to be thanked about Aeris bein' killed what the [bleep]!!!

and when Cloud had a date with Tifa/Aeris they did a play and I did it all wrong.Tifa and Aeris did something suprising in public...

and uh Cid welcoming me to his small house(well it is small)yellin' at Shera for some of that Tea while us nice guests are here he'd be sayin' cuss words and he said to me 'sit your ass down on that chair, or my hospitality ain't good for ya?!' hospitality yeah... right bad second impression...even Cid is cool he acts stupid at some times...

and Hojo is Sephiroth's father? Lucrecia's Sephiroth's mother kind off.
and what if Vincent married Lucrecia which would make Vincent Sephiroth's step father!!! this is too much.
