I remembered a long time ago that someone was playing through their FF6 game without equipping any weapons...so I decided to steal that and add in another little bit of fun. I'm now playing through the game without equipping any weapons or espers. So far, nothing's given me any challenge except for TunnelArmr until I realized I had picked up a Thunder Rod in that cavern...then I used it and it did over 1700 damage, instantly killing it. I'm heading towards Maranda now to get Green Berets for everyone before I go to the Magitek Research Facility, which will be, without a doubt, a really difficult place, since enemies there are weak to magic, and weaponless people aren't going to do squat. Locke is even more useless than he is in the regular game since he can either attack with his weak strength, or steal a useless item. Gau has proven to be a great party member in this game because he can use specific Rages to pull out magic spells, but unfortunately I didn't realize that and spent no time on the Veldt getting new ones, so I'm stuck with the ones you start the game with.

Ack... sounds like that will be tough, with only Terra and Celes being able to heal. I'm guessing Gau and Mog will be VERY valuable there... though.... I shiver to think what it will be like to fight Kefka with almost no spells, and no weapons. *shiver*
Paladin Shield might work to get Ultima, and have them use X-box and Hairpin though... Hmmm.... -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

It's difficult, but not impossible. Special Skills and magic-infused items (like Rods and the Paladin Shield) make a weaponless, magically deficient quest relatively manageable.
Edgar's Tools are a great replacement for physical attacks, as are Sabin's Blitzes. Gau's Rages can add variety, although your lack of control over him makes it a bit frustrating. Healing can be replaced by Mog's Dances (Sun Bath), Sabin's Mantra Blitz and the Healing Rod up until very late in the game. Gem Box/Economizer will still work, since the aforementioned Paladin Shield will be available, and Terra learns Ultima at high levels anyway. It's even easier if you consider Throwing as within the parameters, since Shadow's Stars and Scrolls will be an extremely useful source of elemental and non-elemental damage, and later in the game a few Imp Halberds will make any boss fight a piece of cake. Interceptor's random counterattacks will be a useful source of heavy damage, as well. Strago's Lore Blue Magic would help too, though being able to use it would be stretching the rules a little. Gogo's ability to take on useful Skills will be helpful, as long as he's on high levels. Of course, Cyan is entirely worthless, since SwdTech won't do a thing without a Katana equipped. Likewise, Locke is even less relevant than before, since his attack won't help, and Stealing just isn't reliable or useful enough to merit him taking up one of your precious party slots. In the end, it's quite possible. It just requires a whole lot of work. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. You know... I just realised this will be EXTREAMLY hard to accomplish.... considering to get the Gem Box, you need to fight through the tower w/o using any physical attacks, and survive Ultima on the boss. You can't cast Life 3, so your only choice is to have ALOT of HP. -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

i agree with Fadien, (yes, it will be paintful if you don use terra or Celes...not only Kefka though...)
-------- lol, i was going to start this topic for a different reason ![]() The one i meant to say is also a challenge and mainly testing your FFVI skills. Direction are simple, if you don't know the Japanese version, try Japanese version. When you get an item, you don't know what kind of item you got (unless if it says numbers, then you can assume it's potion or tincuture...or something.) and you don't know what type item you stold from monster, when someone gives you hint, you don't know what his talking about. The only advantage you have, is your experiences in American FFVI. Japanes version has few more stuff (i don't know, that's only reason i first started playing Japanese version) so it's easier to get confused because you never even have seen them in American version. I got it three months ago, but never tried it, until this Monday. WIth ZSNES turbo speed, I'm already outside of Narshe (before Figaro castle) anways, if you watn to try it, ask me to send it. I have it on computer. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â <--------- hope you don't know what you are doing and equip a cursed shield and ring ![]() ============= it'll still be easier than neal's challenge ...trust me -------------------- I will be there... |

Bismark - the equipment part of that challenge is almost made useless because of the Optimum command in the equip menu and the ability to select your weapons and shield in battle. Otherwise, it's no different from the regular game if you've played it enough.
![]() Little challenge update...I accidentally didn't save Shadow on the Floating Continent, and I didn't feel like fighting Atma Weapon again from my last save, so I let it go. Atma Weapon so far has been the most difficult boss because I couldn't heal very much. I took Terra, Edgar, and Gau along with Shadow...Stray Cat rage, constant Drill, and almost all of my X-Potions was the only way that I was able to defeat him. Tunnel Armor would have been really difficult had I not saved the treasures in the Figaro Cave, because one of them upgraded into the Thunder Rod, which did over 1700 damage to him in one shot. ![]() -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? hey, is Sabin's blitz skills depends on his weapons? I think I heard that the XY down, up - is depends on your natual attack. ... probably rumor
---- seriously, if i would do that challenge, it would be best to use umaro, strago, realm, and gau... (which for some people, hate most ![]() -------------------- I will be there... |

i am also using the idea of going through the game with no weapons or espers and i find that sabin and edgar work well along with shadow and your original magic users. Also once u get GOGO and umaro they are a big help. I recommened gettin mog early in the game as well because of his dances. If you can master it Setzers slots are handy. I beat the game and am now going through the game buying one of everything believe me it isnt easy i am on the veldt right now.

You use his spark ability. You don't have the choice about changing his gear, so you just don't use the sword. Doesn't matter though, cause either way, he gets owned. -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

Shock did more damage, but I still attacked with his weapon. I knew that there were going to be parts in the game where I couldn't change certain characters' equipment, so I just said "screw it" because those battles weren't all that important, anyway. I couldn't unequip the moogles, I couldn't unequip Banon, I couldn't unequip Leo, and I won't be able to unequip Umaro. I guess the rule is less "Don't equip weapons" and more "Unequip any weapons where it's possible." The World of Ruin is not very fun right now because I'm low-leveled and not doing very much damage, and for some reason I've run into Doom Gaze three times already and I've barely had the airship. I'll get him eventually, not that it'll do any good...I can't use Bahamut!

/agree Divine Dragon.
Strago's Lore is like Sabin's blitz, or Edgar's tools, or Anyone's ability. The rules aren't that he can't use magical abilitys, it is that he can't equip weapons or espers. And Neal, we know you'll get Bahamut, just for the coolness factor of having him. -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

Guess this is one way not to get bored with the game. Not that I think FF6 is a bad game. It's just I've played it way too many times.
I'll have to try this once my professors realize they've got to finish teaching the stuff before having homework due. |

Wow, that was a lot more difficult than I imagined. I have to admit that it was pretty easy until Kefka's Tower but that was probably because I was so used to the game - the enemies really take a step up in Kefka's Tower since you can't use the party you're used to. I leveled my main four up to 55 and the other eight up to 50 before entering. Uhm...Atma was still pretty easy, but Striker/Inferno/Rough/Whatever was really difficult...I was lucky that they gave a save point right before him. I didn't have a good healer in that team so it really sucked. Strago turned out to be my best healer since he had a lot of HP and Pearl Wind, and the BehemothSuit was great protection to keep the HP up. The hardest boss, though, was the tower of enemies or whatever you'd like to call it right before Kefka. The first one wasn't too bad, but the last one I killed died after casting Quake, so I went into the second one really weak. I somehow killed the second one, and the third one was even worse because when one of the two heads got weak, all it did was cast Meteo over and over and over. Against Kefka, I ended up with Terra, Gau, Mog, and Gogo, which ended up being the best party I could imagine. I had Mog do the Wind dance and Gogo mimic it, so they kept Sun Bathing me for healing. Gau went all out with Stray Cat and Terra was Life 2'ing anyone that died. In the end, good prevailed over evil.

Omg, that was far, I didn't even start my Challenge file --;; and even without challenge, Atma was tough for me... I like the sound of "no espers" though, it feels more like it's real ![]() ------- Maybe my challenge isn't really a challenge, just testing your skills of FFVI, but just try it ![]() -------------------- I will be there... |
