I'd have to say classical musicians are the hardest working, followed by jazz. Jazz musicians are impressive, no doubt, but I think underneath the veneer, classical musicians go through hell.

I respect the improvisational abilities that jazz musicians possess. I also respect the discipline involved in being a classical musician. This of course is not to say that jazzers don't have discipline or classical people don't improvise, these are just my uninformed layman's impressions.

That said, the kind of music I'm currently most into is collegiate and professional a cappella singing.

I voted rap, although I feel the word brings a pretty negative connotation nowadays. People think immediately of Nelly or 50 Cent, or the Lil' Jon skit from Dave Chappelle in which he doesn't say anthing but "Yeah," "What," or "Okay." And to be honest that's what a lot of the pop-rap on the radio sounds like to me, too. What I enjoy is typically referred to as "concious" hip-hop, which concentrates much more on lyrics and some sort of message than a catchy hook.

I voted for metal, which got a slight nod over classical and game music. Just as a disclaimer, I can't stand nu-metal. One thing that's always bothered me is the stereotype that metal bands just bang on their instruments to produce sounds...while this is occasionally true, listen to Blind Guardian or Nightwish or Dimmu Borgir for a few minutes and it'll become quite apparent that the artists know exactly what they're doing.

I chose Other just cause I like alot. I am into rock and metal (pre-1994 thank you), oldies, game music, soundtracks, classical, blues, Irish folk music (especially when I am drinking) and orchestrated. The only thing I hate is rap, techno (if you call that music), and especially manufactured crap pop. I have no respect for anyone who does pop music, except for Michael Jackson (before all the "issues") cause "Thriller" is one of the greatest albums ever.

i also voted "rap" and to give a perspective (i'm not hating on your choice of music, i just want people to know that "conscious" rap is most certainly not the only good rap out there), although i also generally tend to really dislike everything played on the radio, for the most part in my circles "conscious" rap (or hip-hop) is seen in just as much a negative light as radio trash for a few reasons. it's often very pretentious and it is almost always difficult to relate to. also, people who enjoy that kind of music *usually* (not pointing fingers) have this feeling that rap which is based on reality and involves a lot of cursing or description of real but illegal or detrimental activities is somehow much less educated than their preferred musical style -- even when there is just as much (and often more!) feeling and lyrical content put into these songs as there is in this so called "conscious" rap, which, many times, is little more than a bunch of dictionary words strung together to sound educated. examples of excellent, lyrical, and still REAL and RELATABLE rap can be found in the lyrics of z-ro, jay-z, and especially the late 2pac, to name a few.

I null-voted this one. I Have no favorite genre. I listen to everything from Bill Withers to Sublime to Bob Seger to Tool to Outkast. I like any genre, as long as the music is good.

I agree with those of you who say jazz musicians are very valented. I voted for jazz though I'm into smooth and contemporary jazz which is much different from regular jazz. It seems like most people don't even know what smooth jazz is. Lately it's been taking on a pop sound and a new genre has sprung up called "pop instrumental". Whatever you want to call it I've been listening to this music for over 10 years. It has been a great musical journey with some fantastic guitar, piano, horn and vocal progressions. It's a lot of fun.

My second favorite genre is dance/techno/trance/house/euro followed by hipHop, rap and alternative rock respectively. It's a shame that dance music doesn't get much attention here in the US like it does in Europe. Chicago had a dance radio station for 2.5 years, one of the only ones in the country. This station was a blast to listen to and I've collected most of the music played during their regular programming. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights they would play music live from the local dance clubs for like 6 hours straight. Man it was so great... I was always tuned in. They also had a top 10 songs of the day program at 10PM. It was fun keeping track of the movement of each song. A year ago the station was bought out and was turned into a Mexican station when we already have at least 4 of those. sad.gif

some healthy difference in views, here but lets all find some common ground. i think (hope) we can all agree that nobody here likes a flock of seagulls.

there. i said it.

on that token, i think we can all find common ground in that everyone likes the gilligans island theme song. how can you not? its peppy, its upbeat, and it tells a fantastic story about an adventure at sea that went terribly, terribly wrong. songwriting at its best, my friends.

According to my Audioscrobbler list, it looks like I skew more toward the generic "rock" genre. But I think genres in and of themselves are utterly stupid. As has been mentioned, there is no real "rock" genre, and for the most part, there really never was. There are hundreds of subgenres out there, mostly because any shmuck can come along and make one up as long as he can get someone else to start using it. "Emo", anyone? Ooh, or let's go into "Screamo", even better!

I like bands that are considered rock, like U2. I like bands that are considered post-rock, like Sigur Ros. I like ska like Save Ferris or Catch-22. There are artists who are considered very pop these days but have a terribly unique sound, such as Dido and Nelly Furtado. They're pop with an ethnic flair, but they're lumped into a generic top 40 category because genres are stupid. I like some sorts of synthrock like Postal Service, or even a band like Blur, who gets more interesting as time goes by. I'm a sucker for good piano work. I'm a sucker for good acoustic guitar, like Tim Reynolds. I'm a sucker for a fiddle or a violin.

And I'll listen to Flock of Seagulls or virtually any kind of New Wave music. I like the Cure. I like Madonna. I pretty much like it if it is from the 80's. I love the 80's (strikes back). OK, I've lost my mind now.

Edit
And on the subject of radio trash rap, I have to say that I find D12's song on the radio right now hilarious.

I like various bands from The Who and The Kinks to British Sea Power & The Stone Roses -

In Britain at the moment we have a really big indie scene again with new bands springing up all the time - it makes a change to see real bands who write their own music being recognised for a change.

I do try and embrace all types of music, but it tends to be what suits my mood at the time. I think it is important to like what music gives you a good feeling when you listen to it. Never sucumb to peer pressure and pretend to like something just because your mates like it.

I also DJ and used to play in a couple of clubs in Cardiff.
I play Trance and progressive (nothing to cheesy!) and my favourite labels are Bonzai and Black Hole Recordings.

REAL and RELATABLE rap can be found in the lyrics of z-ro, jay-z, and especially the late 2pac, to name a few.

Don't get me wrong, I love Tupac, I have every album, and I love Jay-Z's earlier stuff. But my problem is that for every Tupac and Big L, who can rhyme about stuff like that and make you think about it, there's a dozen rappers who think rhyming about guns and violence instantly makes you "real," and you don't need to put any real thought into the lyrics.

This is just my taste, but I sometimes enjoy a bunch of dictionary words strung together, as long as they're used right. Take this example from Jane Doe:
The church of scientology, feminine biology
Manic depressive psychologically, A.D.D. alive and we
Polluted by technology, the fumes and its ecology
While your thought you was out of copy I get nastier than sodomy
Probably an oddesey, started back on robbery
Was the degree of the economy that do the sovereignty
Regarded as a prodigy, leery in sociology
Let the wallabees always conceal my gynecology
Rhymin' pathologically, that's how it gotta be!
Never makin' no apology, worshippin' my anthropology
F*** modesty, studyin' microbiology
Causin' verbal lobotomy, it's in my geneology
Six months of sobriety, movin' very methodically
Like a unicorn, more waves than oceanography
Guard technology, rip shows antibiotically
True thugs bionically, give birth to criminology

And the concious rap I enjoy the most are the songs that make an intelligent point over great music, like J-Live in Satisfied (just a little after 9-11):

Hey yo, the air's still stale
The anthrax got my Ole Earth wearin' a mask and gloves to get a meal
I know a older guy that lost twelve close peeps on 9-1-1
While you kickin' up punchlines and puns
Man f*** that s***, this is serious biz
By the time Bush is done, you won't know what time it is
If it's war time or jail time, time for promises
And time to figure out where the enemy is
The same devils that you used to love to hate
They got you so gassed and shook now, you scared to debate
The same ones that traded books for guns
Smuggled drugs for funds
And had fun lettin' off forty-one*
But now it's all about NYPD caps
And Pentagon bumper stickers
But yo, you still a n****
It ain't right them cops and them firemen died
The s*** is real tragic, but it damn sure ain't magic
It won't make the brutality disappear
It won't pull equality from behind your ear
It won't make a difference in a two-party country
If the president cheats, to win another four years
Now don't get me wrong, there's no place I'd rather be
The grass ain't greener on the other genocide
But tell Huey Freeman don't forget to cut the lawn
And uproot the weeds
Cuz I'm not satisfied

*"had fun letting off 41" is a reference to the Amadou Diallo shooting.

Anyways, I like music that makes me think about things, and while Pac and Biggie do that, more of the people that do that for me tend to fall into the concious rap bracket.

i said other cause i like like super uber heavy stuff that gives me a headache. its sort of metal/hardcore/rock.

stuff like slipknot where you cant understand what they are understanding and lots of drumms. i also like Korn, Disturbd, Tool, Staind, Whtie Zombie over Rob Zombie, Slipknot, Rage Against the Machines, Rammstein, System of A Down, and Godsmack...

but i also love the lyrics to rap. why? they crack me up!!!

i love stuff by lil john (duh) cause he says three words in all his songs. Yeah, Okay, What... Luda is tight, and ofcoure Jay-Z and Youngbloodz. And ooh yeah 50 cent!!!!!!

but heavy stuff is the biggest part of my life!!!

I like a bit of rock and some game music, like from Final Fantasy, a rock band that I do like is Linkin Park, and no it is NOT Rap, a few people say that it is rap, but it is really alternative rock, and my do listen to some of my friend's Christian Rock whenever I am at his house, which is usually about twice or three times a week, but mostly when it comes to music, I like game music, and NO Offense anyone, I do not like Rap and Country, again no offense.

I'd have to go with industrial rock, although this is the type of music I love the most:

Tool, A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails, System of a Down, Oleander, Godhead, KMDFM (sp?), Rob Zombie, Led Zeppelin, Disturbed, etc.

life's been good to me

I have a mansion forget the price
Ain't never been there they tell me it's nice
I live in hotels tear out the walls
I have accountants pay for it all

They say I'm crazy but I have a good time
I'm just looking for clues at the scene of the crime
Life's been good to me so far

My Maserati does 185
I lost my license now I don't drive
I have a limo ride in the back
I lock the doors in case I'm attacked

I'm making records my fans they can't wait
They write me letters tell me I'm great
So I got me an office gold records on the wall
Just leave a message maybe I'll call

Lucky I'm sane after all I've been through
Everybody says I'm cool (He's cool)
I can't complain but sometimes I still do
Life's been good to me so far

I go to parties sometimes until four
It's hard to leave when you can't find the door
It's tough to handle this fortune and fame
Everybody's so different I haven't changed

They say I'm lazy but it takes all my time
Everybody says Oh yeah (Oh yeah)
I keep on going guess I'll never know why
Life's been good to me so far

My tastes are fairly eclectic, although I'm not a big fan of most rap or country. Right now in my playlist I've got...

Tool, Dave Matthews Band, 311, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Audioslave, Better than Ezra, Coldplay, Evanescence, Flaming Lips, Foo Fighters, Incubus, Nirvana, Ours, Queens of the Stone Age, Smashing Pumpkins, and more that I'm too lazy to list.

Then when I go to bed I usually put on something a bit more soothing, usually Loreena McKennitt, classical, Celtic-type music, etc.

I'm surprised you didn't add Punk, in there..so i chose Other, I mostly like Punk Rock...Hardcore, Oi and some Emo...I'm not a big fan of Emo, but Coheed and Cambria is cool. My Favorite bands are Bad Religion, Pennywise and The Vandals...I also like X and MC5, The Ramones, Fugazi, Dropkick Murphys, And stuff like that...I'm also a big fan of Video Game Music, and I plan to make some MIDI file remixes of diffrent VG songs...if I can ever get around to buying the MIDI software... But...I mostly like all kinds of music...so...Leave it at Other.

what's your favorite type of music. mine is definately rap/hip-hop. i love the beats, the smooth lyrics, and i love laughin at some of the posers that get let in. my favorite rapper has got to be DMX, especially his songs Ayo Kato, get It On The Floor, and The Ruff Ryders Anthem. of course, gotta give some love to my boy YML. you've probably never herad of him. he's a rapper from Statesboro and HE IS GOOD! so waht's your favorite type of music and who's your favorite artist.

I love Metal. A loud, fast, and seemingly aggressive beat always gets me going. Mainly Metallica, Sabbath, Alice, Megadeth and hevy stuff like that. I love druming along and bang my head.

I used to be the largest metal head amongst the people I know. I still am, by most standards. I like bands like Children Of Bodom, Dying Fetus, Nightwish, Metallica, Malevolent Creation, Katatonia and so on. They have talent, and they know how to show it off.

I love old school rock n roll, Rolling Stones,The Who, Ac/Dc, Pink Fylod, The Beatles, Led Zeppellin
and so on.

I'm big on a lot of bands, Radiohead, Bjork, The Cure, Goo Goo Dolls, The Counting Crows, Tears For Fears, Coheed And Cambria, Rush, a whole lot of bands.

I recently got into the whole hardcore music thing, it's not that bad at all. Bands like It Dies Today, As I Lay Dying, Funeral For A Friend, AlexisOnFire, Atreyu,
Underoath and Norma Jean especially. They're really gifted groups, but they take some getting used to.

I agree on the blues/jazz thing, most music came evolved from that, which evolved from classical, which evolved from cave men bashing stones.

I don't really like Rap much, but I have some respect for those rap artists who display SOME level of originality and skill.

I dislike "Emo" music with a passion. Dashboard Confessionals and such...whiney boys complaining about girlfriends they never had, to people equally depressed and care even less. It's just bitching, not music.

That about sums me up, so yay!

I voted for Rock because Rush is my favourite band and I'm listening to them right now. I'll listen to just about anything, though.

My taste has been growing more broad in recent months. Last year, I was purely a classic rock, Celtic-folk, and 'classical' (using the word as a big umbrella term for all orchestral music) listener. Today, my playlists are filled with music I wouldn't even have considered before.

Favourites include:

Rush!
Dead Kennedys
Queen
Descendants
Stan Rogers
Bach, Beethoven, Bizet, et al.
Orbital
Pink Floyd
Boards of Canada
Bob Dylan
Dream Theater
Faith No More
Mr. Bungle
Soundgarden
Bad Brains
Loreena McKennitt
The Rankins
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
INTRO5PECT
Various showtunes/Broadway stuff
Big band music (Buddy Rich was God!)

And of course, the greatest musical genius of our time . . . "Weird Al" Yankovic.

Edit
I deserve to die for leaving out Zeppelin.
