Moderator Edit Note: this topic has been split from Quietus' topic Final Fantasy 6 and a half. Please refer to this topic if some material seems out of context. Isn't that stealing? Ya pretty much, but i'm not selling the game for $ or anything. Modding a game or taking the sprite is also stealing if you think about it. I don't really see any harm being done. That and people isn't going to not buy ff6 because they played my game if it does come out, so squaresoft isn't getting any less profit. Though i could be wrong.

But it's still stealing. You have to get permission to start a game off of Final Fantasy 6. You as so much as try to sell a game like that, lawyers will be all over you in a heart beat. It's not meant to be mean or anything. But I don't think you understand about copy rights.

Oh opps, I didn't see that you didn't want to sell it. But you still need permission. I bet this website got permission to make the sprites based on Final Fantasy characters.

Ya, it might be a good idea to ask square first, though i thought i shouldn't ask them until until the project is at least somewhat underway. ( I mean code for graphics can be easily changed if it's sprite based.) Thanks for the heads up though.
Might be a good idea to tell the Sasuke over there too lol. This post has been edited by Quietus on 17th April 2004 00:41 |

Well, then by now something would have gotten back to the company and they would have shut this site down a long time ago. It happens all the time. So believe it.

Quote (Quietus @ 17th April 2004 06:42) It's going off topic ![]() Yeah, this is supposed to be a topic about your game. But this is an issue I think we should address, so I'm going to pull the copyright posts into another topic. Quote (Wind-Dancer @ 17th April 2004 04:45) Well, then by now something would have gotten back to the company and they would have shut this site down a long time ago. It happens all the time. So believe it. Square Enix's official policy is that you can't use any of their stuff on any Web site, and they won't grant permission no matter how nicely you ask: the privilege is only granted to business partners. A quick glance over oh, say, just about any Final Fantasy site will show you that they certainly don't uphold that rule. FFOnline's legal page suggests that if you make sprites etc. out of screenshots you take yourself rather than directly pilfering material from SE Web site works around their rules, but I wouldn't know if that's legally credible (if it is, we're fine; if not, they're in as much trouble as us, and FFO is certainly big enough that Square knows of its existence). In any case, damaging fan projects which, in the end, only generate publicity for their own games anyway (and don't include anything they sell themselves to begin with, e.g. game ROMs or soundtrack MP3s) is just going to make you unpopular, and a company trying to sell something doesn't want to alienate all its fans. So unless you start making money off it, you're probably going to get away with it, but take care just in case. Best of luck with your project. |

Thanks for the luck, though what i need more is time lol.
As for what you said, it's very true, why would they want to take down fan stuff, most companies won't and don't (look at counter strike for example, it's a mod, and i don't think they had permission in the first place). Secondly, i don't think they would really care for material that's 10 years old, though FF6 might prove a little different because it's so much better. Anyhow, thanks for addressing this ![]() |

I for myself also plan to use Square's stuff in my own game--music, plot elements, character design, graphics, plot themes, and possibly a few other aspects. Since I'm planning to post this game up for free on some website, while noting on that same website that this game is NOT a Square game but rather a fan-made game that is intended as a respectful tribute to Square. I definitely hope they don't sue me for it, and in fact I'd be happy to work with them on RPG projects myself; I'll probably end up defending myself (if the need to do so arises) by saying that my actions would only serve to popularize Square's work and would most probably increase their company's performance.
I wish the best to your project, Quietus, and I hope that one day Square designers may enjoy playing through it and finding some of your ideas (as well as mine, potentially, although I'm just reusing old ideas mainly) quite interesting, useful, and/or good ideas to implement in their games. In any case, I hope that Square doesn't view us as infringing on copyright, but rather condones such behavior, since it would be catering to its fans in a way. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing.
