Question: Is Square music in any way copyrighted, or anything? My mom downloaded this screensaver with drawings of Native Americans or whatever, but to my odd surprise, the FF7 theme from Cosmo Canyon is playing in the background. I don't know, maybe square didn't make it to begin with?

Maybe it was just very similar.
Or maybe the person who made the screensaver completely ripped off the Cosmo Canyon tune because they thought it sounded cool. Or maybe the guy who actually composed the tune decided to do more things with it. -------------------- "Luck is my middle name. My guess is that it was ripped off. Or "borrowed", as I would say. I come up with ideas like that--incorporating videogame music (especially RPG music) into non-game scenarios, in movies, TV shows, novels, and even real life.
But who knows? Maybe he did actually write it, or maybe he had permission from Square/Uematsu. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. It was probably just a fan made midi. All of the FF or even VGM Midis you find on the net are made by fans.
No problem with that. This post has been edited by ffpianomaster on 13th April 2004 23:58 |

It was copyrighted by ART-TLC.It is basically a screen save compilation of different Native American artworks and pictures (drawings/paintings) depicting NA's in their tribal societies. Ex. Two Native Americans hunting a buffalo. They all come from the Heard Museum.
That's why I said as such. It's a copyrighted screensaver by art-tlc.com. Yet, it has the soundtrack of Cosmo Canyon (no, not similar. the exact track.) on it. I don't know, maybe Square gave them permission, but it just seems like that'd be an odd pairing. -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |

Is there a slight chance that the song was not originally written by Square and was just borrowed for FF7? Maybe it was a popular Native American tune?

Ive heard the cosmo Canyon theme other places to. I don't recall where though. This is interesting indeed. Maybe it isn't an FF7 track.

Cosmo Canyon WAS composed by Nobuo Uematsu. If it were not it would have said that he arranged it, which it doesn't. Mr.Uematsu composed that piece himself.
I'm sure someone just put Cosmo Canyon into the screensaver. They might not have even asked if they could. Oh well... |
