Coulda sworn I made this topic before, but it's simple enough. What are some of you're current favorite songs? Songs of the moment, or songs that you could just listen to over and over and still never get sick of. And hey, if you see see a bunch of bands that you know you like on someone's list along with new ones you've never heard of, try checking them out. Exposing people to music they may like where they'd otherwise never hear is always good.
Mine: Brand New - "Failure by Design" Brand New - "Seventy Times 7" Brand New - "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" Fallout Boy - "Grand Theft Autumn" Fallout Boy - "Chicago is So Two Years Ago" Saves the Day - "Sell My Clothes, I'm Off to Heaven Ben Folds Five - "Brick" Ben Folds Five - "Rockin the Subarbs" Taking Back Sunday - "Summer Stars" Taking Back Sunday - "Great Romances of the 20th Century" Taking Back Sunday - "You're So Last Summer" Yellowcard - "Ocean Avenue" Yellowcard - "Rough Draft" D12 - "My Band" -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |

I won't mention classical music here, since this was intended as a pop music favorites thread, and classical music pieces aren't usually referred to as "songs". I will also exclude video game music tracks, except remixes.

It's an especially old thread, I know, but over the past few days I've been compiling a list of my top ten songs. It's been quite suprising, looking it over, and I've had to not only look over songs by bands I'm into right now, but songs I've loved in the past and I still appreciate to this day. I haven't got around to ordering them yet, but I'm confident in the tracks I've chosen and will provide a (very) short synopsis as to why.
Soft Machine - Moon In June. This is, in my humble opinion, the most complex song I've ever heard. Spanning a considerable 19 minutes, this song encompasses elements of every genre I've ever liked, including metal, jazz, pop, rock, prog and alternative, and tops it off with the stunning vocals of Robert Wyatt, without a doubt earning it a place. And You Will Know Us By the Trail Of Dead - Relative Ways. When I first heard this, it was completely different from everything I was listening to at the time and everything I'd been listening to before, and I loved it for that. Over time, however, I've come to appreciate how cohesive and, most importantly, passionate song it is. Comprising of three of the most incredible riffs and melodies I've ever heard, that along with the vocals earn it a place in the top Captain Beefheart - Owed T'Alex. I talk about Beefheart entirely too much, so suffice to say this is simply my favourite song of his, encorporating everything I love about his music. Sends a shiver down my spine every time I hear it. King Crimson - Starless. I always found prog rock a bit pretentious until I heard these guys. They've stripped away all the pompousity but kept the complexity, and this song features their most perfect melodies and, after one of the best build-ups ever, slams into full distorted bass & mellotron jazz-metal. Kings of Leon - Talihina Sky. What a pleasant suprise this hidden track turned out to be. Airy piano, beautiful guitar, Caleb's vocals - It's one of the most beautiful tracks for just chilling out, emotive but in a humble country sort of way. Frank Zappa - Peaches En Regailia. While it's a great song musically, it doesn't mean as much to me personally as a song as much as the memories of me and friends dancing to it do. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah. When I first heard this, I was honestly rather overwhelmed by the soulful power of it. The Leonard Cohen version I always pretty much despised - a good idea, executed excruciatingly - but this was the song that really made me more open-minded about what I'd consider worth listening to. Kula Shaker - Hollow Man Parts 1 & 2. This is really stretching back: I first got this album at age seven and it was, really, my introduction to 'real' music, and that earns it serious points, but even now, I remember this being the first time a song really moved me. It's an enchanting song that really blew me away, and listening to it now, I can really appreciate the intricately woven melodies and vocal parts. Even if it weren't so awesome, this would get in on sentimental value. North Mississippi Allstars - Shake 'Em On Down. I believe this to be the single most innovative song since I was born. Going to territory few people have ventured and even fewer people have been successful in traversing, Shake 'Em On Down is, for me, the definitive mix of white and black music. Incorporating blues, alt. rock and even rap-style drum samples and beats, it earns it's place both for it's innovation and complexity and for some of the best guitar solos going. Sigur Ros - Hoppipola. Most of the time, I'll buy an album and I'll play it through whilst sitting on the computer, not really paying much attention until a specific riff catches my ear; however, as soon as I got this, I knew it was like nothing before it, it truly was phenomenal and caught me completely offguard with the sheer power of it. This song is simply awe-inspiring. I've been especially sentimental throughout this post, yes, but my favourite songs are generally songs that mean something to me. |
