Another tiny mystery?

I'm playing through FF6 right now, and I just finished the banquet sequence. Wandering around Vector with Locke and Terra, I walked into the Cafe where the guy tells you earlier about Kefka being Cid's first guinea pig. At this point in the game, Gau is in the room, and he says "Smells like parents' house here...why so familiar?"
Basically, I'm wondering if anyone knows what he's talking about. I probably just forgot some plot detail from later in the game that explains this, but I'm not positive. -------------------- Sabin: ... to Mom... and to Figaro. "A true classic never goes out of style!" "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.... You're way ahead of me. I never even knew about that little bit of dialogue. I suppose it gives me yet another reason to play through FF6 again.

are you playing i90's patch version of FF6..I know he added and changed some dialogue involving gau in particular..not sure if this is one of those instances..perhaps he can clear it up.

I believe this is what is called a plot hole in the business. In Nikeah (World of Balance), we hear a good chunk of Gau's backstory - the guy in the house at the start of Sabin's scenario is Gau's father; Gau was a "problem birth" - I presume that his mother died during labor, his father freaked out, and abandoned him on the Veldt. Thus, Gau never should have lived in a house.
This is canon dialogue (it's in my version anyway, which was a pretty early release). I am just calling it part of the whole "Gau the orphan" backstory. |

I think it has something to do with the fire in the old mans house and the fact that Vector was on fire (burning smell?)

He says that at a bar in Vector. I always thought it refered to the smell of alcohol. His dad being a crazy drunk and all. They tend to leave details of stuff like this out of American versions but I'm pretty sure that is that piece of dialouge's intention.

Can you give a specific example...I just can't remember one. Also, wouldn't being ANYWHERE near alcohol get that reaction not just that one particular bar?

His father thought his baby was a demon child. He mistakes your party for clock repairmen, etc....That bar happens to be the one time you stop and talk to Gau where we can be fairly certain alcohol is present.
