The title explains it. Â Which ability unique to a single charecter (or in Palom and Porem's case, the only joint attack in the game) is the coolest? Â Go off which you think is the coolest, not which is the most usefull, or does the most damage.
No Tellah and FuSoYu on the poll, cause both just use magic, and White/Black magic isn't unique to just them. Â Didn't include Edwards two lame abilities because.... well...... they are lame (and I ran out of room) My vote is Rydia, just cause it would be sweet to be able to summon monsters to fight for you. Â Kain's Jump is ok, but still doesn't come close to the coolness factor of summoning. Edit: Well, I have started to play the Hard Version of FF4, and it appears that Edwards and Tellah both do have some other abilitys... Edwards is still lame, and I don't understand what Tellah's does, but I'm eager to continue the game, and see how the hard version compares to the normal version. I'm also going to say just which one you like the most, and think is the coolest. I know Call and Jump are probably still going to get a majority of the votes, but oh well. -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

Call beats all of them hands down. Maybe twin is sort of close, but not really, it really isn't powerful enough. Or perhaps, Palom on his own is just too strong. Palom's fire and Porom's cure deals more damage together to Milon than twin, just figure in the conditions for twin, and that I didn't add Palom's stronger spells, and it shows twin can't live up to their individual skills.
The rest of the skills are more or less situational. Ninja magic seems to be one of the better ones, even if the elementals aren't all that useful, image is. Jump is useful, but I can get buy with just normal attacks with Kain. Maybe if lancers weren't tanks jump would be better. Heh. But as is, I prefer for him to stay on the ground to take hits for my casters unless he's jumping to smack Valvalis, an airborne enemy, or avoiding a mega-flare. Kick is mildly useful, but just doesn't deal enough damage. I don't attack enough with Rosa to appreciate aim. I'm stingy with the good arrows. Heh. |

twin magic kicks arse. it's situational, i'll admit, because it's the best damage at the time when you have them. plus, come on, they're really really young but they could probably take golbez in reality.

I agree with Sabin about Twin Magic. It was great because it gave Porom the ability to use damaging magic, and the magic was incredibly powerful at the time, too. Tellah was in your party for most of the time, too, so you didn't have to worry about wasting her ability to heal.

You're missing the point. Sure, it's decent against normal enemies, but most of them aren't a threat. A little leveling, and fire 2 gets the job done just as well. The only difficult target there gets knocked down in one shot by DK Cecil. Then on Milon, fire 2 + cure 2 > twin. More damage, more versatility. And if you do a little bit of leveling, then virus is on par with twin, and quake > twin by a long shot. If it always used the better twin skill, then it would be better, but it isn't that good for sucking up two actions, though it is much better if Palom stays a low level and doesn't get better spells.

Mithreel: Twin Magic is what i think is the coolest. It's not a matter of damage or what combos are better damaging. I have to say jump. Back row Kain, he won't get hurt (Dragoon armor + back row = 1 damage). Just jump madly.

Excuse me then. Â I merely looked at, "Best Special Ability" and "The title explains it" and went off thinking that is what the topic was actually about when it is actually more along the line of coolest special ability, which I'll say is a toss-up for me between DK Cecil and twin magic, though again, it could use just a little more oomph, or at least tone that mad man Palom down. Â =) Â Calling is cool, but co-op attacks are so cool I don't know why they don't implement them more.

Aye.. I did edit it though. Originally, I was going to go off which was the most usefull, but I think a Majority of votes would go to Call, followed by Jump..... so I decided to see who thought abilities were just neato!

I too, am jumping on the Call wagon. There's nothing Rydia can't do with that useful little technique. She can cause huge damage, revive the entire party, and after getting Odin, instantly destroy minor enemies. What more could anyone ask for? One woman team right there. Everyone else is secondary =P

It's still not good enough to let her level alone though. Sure, multiple attacks of Bahamut kill just about everything with little trouble, but she still often gets owned by stacked red dragons.

Jump. Since Kain's damage is something you can always count on to be really high, and he isn't susceptible to most damage (since he's in the air). Kain is the Shiznit.

Jump...
Up up and away! Let's just say that it's awesome that you can do double damage (double more against air target) and be immune from damage just for the price of waiting a little longer to hit. Heh heh. It's how I beat Bahamut, surprisingly enough. I can never get enough of that cool sound of him taking off, and ohhh the satisfaction when I hear him pounce on his enemies! Second place would be Dark Wave, just because it's a hit all that could looks neat and sounds neat. But, eh, doesn't really give you the satisfaction of a clean kill like Jump. |

Throw all the way. When used correctly with the right items, it could do mass dmg. More than anything else i had ever seen anyone do...

I like to use Edge's throw ability. I use the cheesy method of replicating items and produce lots of stuff to throw. The drain spear in the earlier part of the game and Excalibur in the latter part. A couple of Excaliburs in a behemoth's hide is a good thing. Best of all, no MP used!

I liked the Dark wAVE. It looked cool, and it did damage too all enemies which was really helpful in the beginning of the game.

Dark Wave, Remember, Pray, Boast, [insert name of Porom's own special skill in FF4j here], [insert name of FuSoYa's special skill in FF4j here]: I don't have experience of these, so I won't comment on them.
Cover: useful, but not the best ability. Jump: also useful, but also not the best ability. I did use it quite often, though, since Kain doesn't have any other special abilities. (Why couldn't he have magic? It was so nice with an all-mages team!) Call: Rydia's command gets my vote. Titan helped significantly with the EvilWall. Then there was Leviathan. Then [huge booming voice]BAHAMUT, GOD OF THE SUMMONED MONSTERS!!![/huge booming voice] You can't top that. (Plus she gets black magic.) Sing: I guess it's supposed to mess with enemies' status, but it never seemed to do anything for me. I almost never used it. Hide: --- (I hope you get it.) Aim: Rosa never seemed to have trouble hitting stuff, so Aim didn't really increase her hit rate; it did however seem to make her attacks deal more damage. I used this extensively with Artemis arrows against dragons, but this is another useful skill that just isn't the coolest. Kick: A very weak (weaker than Edward's attack, stronger than mages' attack) physical attack against all enemies. Rarely used. (The FFV version was much stronger and I like that one more.) Twin: sometimes useful, especially against Milon's zombies, and pretty cool too, but not the best. Peep: So-so in usefulness. Not that interesting. Dart (Throw): Quite useful, especially if you've saved up swords and knives and are up against a difficult, quick boss. But not-as-good special effects as Call. Sneak (Steal): It got me a whole bunch of Ether1s, but other than that it wastes Edge's strong-attack-power turn. It also took forever for me to steal that Firebomb from a Red Dragon. Not that I needed it, but it's not that easy to steal stuff. Ninja magic: Weird, and occasionally the first three (Flame, Flood, Blitz) are useful against a large group of high-physical-defense enemies (think puddings). But useless against major bosses or tough single enemies. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I think call is the most graphically pleasing ability, making it quite cool. The only reason jump is cool is because Kain is cool right? The ability did work well in FF4 I must say. Palom and Porom's twin attack is also pretty nice so it was hard to decide. There are a lot of nice abilities seen in FF4. I chose call.

i loved call, squaresoft is unique when it comes to this aspect of rpging, they always made sure it plays a major role in battles, and the eye candy they made in the 3-d games are amazing, and sometime amusing(brothers rock paper scissors) and often they play a role in the story. ff3, 2, 10 and x-2 i dont know about, havent played in them, the only ff games that i know dont have summon monsters in the story line is ff-7, and ff-1. in ff4, ff5, ff6, ff8, and ff9 have summon monsters with roles.
anyways, im rambling, call for my vote -------------------- THE LIZARDSSS SHALL EATSSS YOU |

One word: Bahamut. FFIV's Bahamut is pretty unique, he looks like a skinny little worm and then BOOM!!

Call/Summon is my favourite ability. It's expensive, MP-wise, but it is usually well worth it. Bahamut is my favourite tool in the final battle since it does a lot of damage and is cast quite quickly.
My second favourite ability would have to be Jump. I love that Dragon Knight ability in all games it is featured in, except for 6 where it takes to long to do... -------------------- --sbq92 <>< |

Abilities:
Cecil: Dark Wave, Cover, and White Magic Cain: Jump Rydia: White Magic, Black Magic, Summon Tella: White Magic, Black Magic, Remember Gilbert: Sing, Hide, Medicine Rosa: White Magic, Prayer, Aim Yang: Build Up, Endure, Kick Palom: Strengthen, Black Magic, Twin Magic Porom: Fake Tears, White Magic, Twin Magic Cid: Peep Edge: Ninjutsu, Dart, Sneak FuSoYa: White Magic, Black Magic, Regen I didn't like Dark Wave all that much. I use it only when against a bunch of weak enemies, and when I'm in a rush. Cover as a command wasn't that great, but his Auto-Cover was cool. Jump sucked. Took way too long for the damage it did. I never really used Remember. All it did was cast a random spell, and they seemed to just be the ones he already had. Sing was OK, but I tended to only use it when he was a frog. Hide was very good, all things considered. Medicine rocked. Prayer hardley ever worked, and I may have as well just used a Healing Staff. Aim was very good, since arrows are so limited. Build up did twice the damage in half the time. I liked it though, since I could use it on monsters that counter, like those porcupine-rats. Endure was OK. Hardly ever used it. Kick was good against large groups of weak enemies. Strengthen and Fake Tears did so very little, the battle would be over before you used them enough times to be useful. Twin was cool. No denying that. Peep was good. Didn't really do much good for MP saving, but a good way to spend Cid's turn if you didn't want him attacking. Ninja Magic was Ok. I used it less times than it would have been useful. Dart was cool. Good way to throw away cheap, powerful weapons you don't need anymore. The items that could be stolen in this game weren't any good. Regen was Ok, but I was never in a long enough battle for it to be effective. Black and White Magic were crucial. Summon Magic was the best I voted Call. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |
