That is, do you ever type in "lol" in IMs or chat but actually have the straightest, most blank poker face in the world? My mom does this, and sometimes my sister, too. They'll have the most totally flat face in the world and be all like, "lol yea i no" or "lol tahts funy".

Sometimes, but rarely. I just don't laugh at little things, but if I feel that I should, then I type lol. Most of the time, I'm laughing hysterically, though.

I only use lol if I am actually laughing. Many things may cause me to smile, so I use ":)" instead. When I do use lol, people know it's true because I use it so rarely.

The phrase "LOL" is something I've always disliked, because it makes me think of people rocking gently, which clearly isn't the intended effect at all (and I dislike the nonsensical lowercase "lol" even more for pretty much the same reason). I do sometimes stick in a ROFL, but no, I certainly don't roll on the floor, or even laugh usually. Most commonly you'll get a "Heh" out of me as an acknowledgement of humour, which I feel is the best representation of the slight smirk and minor sniffle I'd give as acknowledgement to all but the greatest hilarity in real life.
But I might not do that at the same time in real life. You don't always react that way, do you? Don't you sometimes hear something funny, but it doesn't quite make you laugh? You wouldn't want to offend the speaker by looking blankly on, especially as it was somewhat amusing, so you consciously muster a chuckle for the occasion. I see "LOL" or whatever as a simulation of that, personally. But hey, maybe it's just me. |

I see a lot of things that make me smile and chuckle a bit, and that's a LOL to me. Something that makes me burst out is a ROFL. But a lot of times I'll just throw in a "lol" or a "rofl" to be polite.

Being very poor with my grammer, I make a concerted effort to write correctly online, so that I'll improve. To this end, I try not to use abbreviations, though emoticons have started to creep into my vocabulary <3. Also, I don't like abbreviations because I read them as sounds (lmao = Lame-o, which is the opposite of how it is intended to be taken). In the rare case that something does make me "laugh out-loud", I normally say something like "Actually, that did make me laugh out-loud."

I null voted, because I've never used "lol" before. I say "*laughs*" or "/me laughs." or "/me laughs!" or "/me laughs profusely" or something of that sort.
Well, I've used it before, but only to mock those people who do it. The only IM abbreviation I sometimes use is "ttyl", and only sometimes. I prefer "cyalater". -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! I most often say "lol" when i'm being really sarcastic and spiteful. "Lol, i can't believe you'd say something so stupid."

Guilty.
I accompany a lot of my statements with "lol" or "rofl". Of course there's an intricate system of laughing in chat rooms. Start with "lol" or whatever, and work your way up to "ROFLWSETMML", or something like that. If I really do laugh (which I have a few times at CoN, for sure), I'll usually type in three consecutive lines of "ROFL". -------------------- SPEKKIO: "GRRR...That was most embarrassing!" |

Yeah alot of times I usually type a "lol" or even a "haha" when it wasn't even funny just to make the other person feel good. Only a few can acutally make me laugh with what they type.

You can tell if you've gotten a good laugh outta me if I pull a 'lol' out long after the jokes been said cause I been spending all that time laughin to the high heavens (hmm...ltthh...nah). I don't 'rolf' since it far too much resembles puking and it's dirty to boot.
If something typed gets on 'o those loud short HAH!'s outta me, then I pull a LOL, otherwise I stay away from the rest. -------------------- |

I lie about it most of the time, although it's not really lying. Most of the time I appreciate something is funny but I laugh inside. It would be weird to see a guy sitting at his computer 24/7 in total darkness laughing insanley.

Quite guilty, actually.
You see, my system is that if something is said with the intended effect of making a joke, I will politely put lol in lowercase or just hahax, or something of that sort. When I use caps, though, I really mean it, in other words I really find it funny. -------------------- Student of CCS, Grandmaster of Alternative Literature and Musical Passionista at your service!!! |

I don't know what to vote for since I almost never use "lol." I've used it more than I would care to admit, but I'm stopping it.

I like to keep my 'loling' in check, (over use just makes i meaningless) so i'll only type if i'm literally laughing. Unfortunately I'm quite easily amused, and I can only go online at work so I end up having to fake major fits of coughing regularly.
I also went through a phase of trying to slip in different abbreviations. you know, just to mix it up a little. e.g. ROFCMLFO (Rolling On the Floor Cos My Limbs Fell Off) I was amused (for at least a day) -------------------- oooooooOOO you guys'll like this http://cgi2.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?...46477&items=250 |

I don't talk to people often on IM. However, the people I do talk to are usually hilarious, so I mean it most of the time. But my mother seems completely unable to say anything really funny online, so I have to just lie about that. When I say lol though, I usually mean it.
