I'm sure you've heard it in some form or another. Parodies of popular songs. It's what Weird Al does best, and it's made him famous. So, what do you think of this type of music? Some say its not original, but I believe it is very original. Also, what is your favorite one of these type of songs?
My favorite is by Weird Al: "It's All About the Pentiums", a parody of "It's All About the Benjamins" -------------------- Wow. 1,000 posts. I miss you all now that I'm in boarding school! ;_; |

Eh, as long as they're not taken seriously they can be considered original I suppose, although all it is is remixing the words. Eh. I haven't heard too many of these but Amish (sp?) Paradise was pretty good. It's funny how Weird Al got in trouble for that one.

Not a huge fan, but the music's generally catchy so I listen to it on occasion.
My favorite would probably be that horoscope song, I'm not even sure what it's based off of. -------------------- Sabin: ... to Mom... and to Figaro. "A true classic never goes out of style!" "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain..." |

What most people don't know, is Weird Al DOES write his own music too, the "That's your Horoscope for Today" is just one of those. I love Weird Al. Yeah, for the most part, he takes other music, but he does sometimes write his own music. Another example is his polka mixes. I LOVE those!

Actually, I think it's more of a 50-50 ratio of originals-parodies. Maybe leaning a bit to the parodies side. After all, it's what he's most famous for. Smells Like Nirvana(Smells Like Teen Spirit) and The White Stuff(The Right Stuff - NKOTB) are some of my favorites. Both were on his "Off the Deep End" album, which I think was his best work. Yall remember who NKOTB was right?

I like a lot of Weird Al's old stuff.
Fat (Bad) Lasagna (La Bamba) This Song is Just Six Words Long (I've got my mind set on you) I actually sang Fat in front of my entire school back in the 5th grade talent show. It was exceptionally badass. |

Huzzah for Weird Al! I have to give it up for "Headline News" (I think that's the title) which was based on a Crash Test Dummies song.
Here's a quote from another fav. "It's hard to bawggle nawddle zous with all these marbles in my mouth" Smells like Nirvana.... great lyrics! -------------------- Get me off this Disciplinary Committee so I can play any FF except for FF8!!! |

I used to listen to him a few years back, but I've grown out of his humour. My favorite track of his would be the Star Wars episode 1 Resume with the beat of American Pie. I used to know it by heart. I was a bored child.

So far, I've only heard one of Weird Al's songs, which also happens to be the one by which I heard about him: He did a polka-style Pokemon listing (similar in idea to the Pokerap), and called it Polkamon. I like Pokemon, but I'm not afraid to say that this is extremely silly, lame, and stupid, but in such a way that it is SO hilariously funny.

I love Weird Al's songs. I have one album of his, Bad Hair Day, but I have heard a lot of his other songs, such as Angry White Boy Polka, which is one of my favorites. I've also seen his movie UHF, which was hilarious. Anyone who is a fan should go rent it. It features a pre-Seinfeld Michael Richards, and he did a great job as well.

I've been a Weird Al fan since shortly after the release of Bad Hair Day (the best Weird Al album IMO), and I like most of the stuff on his albums. My top 10 favorite in no particular order are:
Angry White Boy Polka (off Poodle Hat) Dare To Be Stupid (off album of same name) The Saga Begins (the famed Episode 1 song, from Running With Scissors) Money For Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies (from TV album) Polka Your Eyes Out (off Off the Deep End) Everything You Know Is Wrong (off Bad Hair Day) Albuquerque (got the spelling off the album, Running with Scissors) The Night Santa Went Crazy (Bad Hair Day) Since You've Been Gone (Bad Hair Day) Amish Paradise (Bad Hair Day) -------------------- "I was using a metaphor. Someone shut him up before I do it with a knife."- Black Mage, 8-bit Theatre "I found out what zombies are weak against......Point Blank Annihilation"- Black Mage, 8-bit Theatre "You'd be paranoid too, if everyone was out to get you!" |

Weird Al is awesome! I mean, even if he didn't write his own music, listen to all the song styles he can imitate! He does Creed's lead singer's voice, he can to the boy band's voice, he can do... I dunno, it's just really impressive that he can imitate so many music styles so well.

Upon thinking about it, what Weird Al (according to Goobers's post above) does is very similar to the FFV Mimic class and FFVI's Gogo. Rather interesting coincidence that a Weird Al topic would be posted here, in an FFV and FFVI (among other FFs) forum

"that's your horoscope for to day" (from his album, running with scissors) those are the most prominent in my mind. i know almost all of his songs word for word. i am absolutely shocked about what was in the news last week. his parents found dead in their house... it's absolutely depressing. i have a feeling that this will affect his career, and on his next album (if he has a next one) the quality will probably not be up to its ussual standards... and if he does retire from music because of this tragedy (<=SP?)... i believe i can safely say he will be missed by many oh and DC8 the real name to the star wars episode 1 song is call "the saga begins" This post has been edited by Zechs on 18th April 2004 23:32 -------------------- ~ A Hero Is Someone Who Stands When Their Legs Are Gone~ |

Being a Star Wars freak, my favorite is "Yoda" (originally "Lola", by the Kinks I think). The Saga Begins is pretty good too, but closer runnerups to "Yoda" are "Albuquerque" and "Living With a Hernia." The latter holds a special place in my heart because I'm a James Brown fan.

"Al's hurting deeply right now, and this is his way of honoring Nick and Mary," Karl Tuft said of the song in which a subdued Yankovic sings, "First you lit some flames / Then the smoke stopped your breathin' / Carbon mono's th'way you went... / Up to heaven" over a somber, minor-key accordion melody. Tuft added that the best way for Yankovic to give voice to his pain and loss was by altering the voice of Clapton's pain and loss.
