I saw a comment about this in the News section and decided to make a thread about it. So here it is.
There was some talk last year about Nintendo going the way of Sega and becoming a third party company. However, since then Nintendo has had great success with the Gamecube after a price cut and a couple of good applications. It now looks like Nintendo is going to be around for at least the next generation of systems. My question is this: is this good news? I was really excited that they might be going third party. I like Nintendo games, like Metroid, Zelda, and Mario, but those games aren't enough to warrant me buying a seperate system. And Crystal Chronicals, which had me really excited (and about to buy a GC) requires 4 game boy advances to play 4-player. WTF? It seems to me that Nintendo is too caught up in system gimmicks (yes, your portable system can hook up to your console. hooray) and not enough about getting support from good third or second party companies. Nintendo still makes quality games, but I think it would be better if they made them for PS2 and Xbox. What are your thoughts? I'm curious. |

Nintendo just doesnt seem to go along in the same trend as the PS2 or XBox. look at the game seletion for each...what is the ps2 equivilent of Warrio World? My point is that Nintendo seems to design its systems around the games it wants to produce and that is what makes it special. Most game devlopers work arund the system, making the game conform to it, however when Nintendo makes a system thy know what they want to put out for it and make a system specifialy for that. Not to say I wouldent like to see some Nintendo games on the other systems or even the PC

nintendo went to hell when they made n64. in my mind, they completely ruined metroid, castlevania, and especially zelda when they traded sprites for polygons and tried to make these games 3d. not that im against making 3d games, just dont try putting classics on a platform that doesnt well become them, just make new games. look how great goldeneye was.
i hope nintendo gets totally shut down, because theyre just spinning their wheels trying to keep up with sony nowadays and its just not gonna happen. nintendos still got a place in my heart because of their original NES (my favorite system), the super nintendo, and the original gameboys (the only ones i'll play, the newer ones are too small for me to hold comfortably). i still love those systems, but i think nintendo has had its place in the sun and its time to bow out. -------------------- You watch the world exploding every single night Dancing in the sun, a newborn in the light Say goodbye to gravity and say goodbye to death Hello to eternity and live for every breath Your time will come... |

I too wish that I could play Crystal Chronicles, but I agree with therandyrhoads that 2D Nintendo was the better era. I no longer take Mario and Link seriously: I feel somehwat excluded by Nintendo because I'm an adult.

Nintendo is classic. i just hope the next system they come out with can rekindle the foires in my belly. If it became third party i would be upset

Well someone's gotta go. Having 3 alive and kickin' consoles on the market at the same time is just ridiculous. All this cross platform stuff is an obstacle to game developement and game sales. Nintendo seems to be lost in the 3D age, unable to get a grip on what gamers want. It would be a shame to see Nintendo leave the console market considering the memorable consoles they've enjoyed tremendous success with (NES and SNES), but if they can't win back the 3rd party support they're done. Now even their first party titles are lacking. What else is left for Nintendo? I don't think they can sustain a successful console anymore and their games probably would sell better on other consoles that people actually own. Maybe later on down the road Nintendo will have the opportunity to regain control of the console market (or at least present a better showing). The more consoles there are, the more money consumers have to spend to get the games they want and that sucks. Having Nintendo's games on the PS2 or PS3 would be nice.

I like Nintendo and like rage I was thinking about buying a Gamecube to play Crystal Chronicals but decided not to. They will probably still be around, and I will just have to wait till the price of a gamecube, at least a used one, drops below 50 dollars so I can get one and get CC, Zelda, Mario, and Metroid.

Wow. Just, wow. The response so far has been unexpected, to say the least.
I love Nintendo personally, and their philosophy of quality over quantity and efficient innovation over unfettered extravagance has produced some of the greatest games of all time in any generation. Going the way of Sega would be a tragedy for me, since seeing Zelda or Mario on a PS2 would be uncomfortable, and seeing Metroid on a X-box would be even worse. The N64 was a stupid idea, sure, but you have to give Nintendo credit for working with such a crappy system and still coming up with priceless works like Mario 64 and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. To say nothing of Harvest Moon 64. I proudly own a Gamecube as well, and the quality of games on that system has yet to diminish. I'm not a stereotypical Nintendo fanboy in any sense, as I also own a PS2, which I love, and I consider myself a PC gamer on an equal standing. Still, the highly-publicized "Death of Nintendo" is both a myth and a sad theory. If anyone has to go, I'd say the X-box. There's nothing wrong with a newcomer, but I absolutely despise the way that Microsoft does business with their console branch. Basically, they replace talent and experience with gigantic sacks of money they have lying around, churning out mostly sub-standard products by virtue of nothing save a monumentous financial advantage. And said advantage isn't even the product of the X-box itself; they have a sizable PC-related empire that all but keeps the fledgling video game division running. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. I really want to see some 2D platformers...think of something like Castlevania or Metroind with hyped up monsters tons more wepon combinations and twice the space! It worked for SoTN for the PS1 (it was around the time of FF7 and it won TONS of awards) they can do the same for those games now only with an even further step up!

I agree with SM, I'm not saying death to Nintendo, partly because some of the games they've produced on the later systems HAVE kicked ass, and partly because of...well, they're Nintendo. I must disagree with therandyrhoades, because Nintendo did a killer job resurrecting classics such as Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, F-Zero, and Metroid. Especially Metroid. Before Metroid Prime, I would've laughed if you told me they could pull off such a monstrous assignment as making a Metroid title on the GameCube, and also make it just as great as those on the NES and SNES. But they did it, and did it very, very well. Of course, there are games that DID fail (i.e. Castlevania 64), but overall Nintendo did excellent.
