I know you're allowed to take your entire group of characters into the final battle, but I know I have my top four who I keep alive no matter what, and almost always finish the game with. Here's who they are, and how they're outfitted:

Sabin - all the blitzes (duh!), all the spells learned except Merton and Meteor. Bum Rush is the main reason I use him (frequently doubled with the Quick spell). He also has a Black Belt equipped because he does a lot of damage with his counter attack.

Terra - equipped with Gem Box/Economizer and all the spells, especially Ultima. She also has the Atma weapon, but is mostly just used for healing and blasting multiple targets with Ultima whenever possible.

Celes - she has all the spells learned (except Ultima, Meteor, Merton), but her main use is her Genji Glove equipped Soul Sabre/Illumina attack, which hits for a lot of damage. I have her use Quick fairly often to double the damage of the Illumina, and it never hurts when it casts Pearl.

Cyan - He knows the strongest curative spells and the most powerful attack magic, but most of the minor spells I don't mess with. He's equipped with a Genji Glove and his two most powerful swords. His main use, though, is double Sword Techniques thanks to the Quick spell. I give him a Black Belt too, because his double counter attack is very handy.

Well, that's my main four. My backups are pretty decent too, like Setzer with the Genji Glove + Dice/Fixed Dice, also equipped with Economizer and Ultima, and Shadow with Offering and Stunner, etc. The four mentioned above usually hog the whole fight, though, and the rest are just pumped up for their battles with the bosses in Kefka's tower. I can remember what it was like back before I learned about the Quick and Ultima spells, the Illumina sword, and the Offering. The final battle used to be a whole lot...um...tougher. tongue.gif

This is almost always my team:

Edgar - I give him all the best equipment: Illumina, Paladin Shield, Genji Helm, Genji Armor, Marvel Shoes, Ribbon. I give him whatever Esper bonus I feel is necessary, which should probably be Strength, but I have given him HP or Stamina in the past, and haven't played all the way through since, so I haven't had the chance to properly boost him, yet. I give him all spells, too.

Celes - I give her the Excalibur or Scimitar and the Genji equipment. I give her Economizer and Marvel Shoes as relics, and I give her Magic Power as the Esper bonus. I give her all spells.

Locke - I give him 2 Wing Edges (+14 Speed!) and the Red Cap and Dark Suit for additional speed. Then I give him the Genji Glove and Marvel Shoes. I give him the Speed boost (obviously), and I also give him all spells.

Sabin - I give him 2 Tiger Fangs, the Red Cap and the Red Jacket. I give him the Genji Glove and the Marvel shoes, and I give him the Strength bonus, as well as all the spells.

I also usually get everyone to Level 99 before facing Kefka. I like being uber-powerful. happy.gif

Okay here is my Final 4:

Edagr: Aura Lance, has the chainsaw and uses Ultima most of the time, no need for ethers in FFVI, I just use osmose to get back my MP, and everyone has it, also I have every tool but the air anchor. and he has around 9000 HP

Terra: All Magic, has 999 MP, Knows every spell but merton, and when she transforms her phys. atks. hit 9999 every time, the genji glove rocks.

Mog, Master of the dance, double Pearl lance, and is powerful.

Lastly, Gogo: knows every spell and is more reated as a reqular char.: Fight, Magic, Mime, and Item.

and my favorite magic combo is: Haste2, then Quick. Ultima, Ultima, then Ultima Ultima. Very powerful.

The 4th slot in my party is always a wildcard slot. The first 3 slots are locked in stone. I will be talking about my experience from FFVI Expert Version because it's more interesting.

Gau: By the time I reach the end of the game Gau blocks almost everything, is almost invulnerable to physical damage (Snow Muffler) and is invulnerable to all magic attack elements (Paladin Shield). Plus I have him hyped up with Marvel Shoes and Hero Ring (Detah's suggestion smile.gif). Ok even without this junk the guy does extreme damage with Leo's Shock and Catscratch. I just put him on auto-pilot and let him do his work while I concentrate on controlling the other 3 characters. In the event that Gau dies he'll be on Life 3 status so when he's revived I can have him help heal the rest of the party if needed. Many times he's the only guy left alive so I have to quickly revive the rest of the party. This is usually possible with Gau's 60 speed stat and haste via Marvel Shoes. His ATB fills up fast.

Sabin: Bum Rush is just too good to pass up (although the 9999 damage cap is a severe limitation). I put a Black Belt on him so he can use his Tiger Claws and do Blitzes at the same time, along with a Cure Ring for the 255 HP every 5 seconds or so (no FFVI documentation really talks about how often Regen heals). Regen works wonders, especially in long battles. In the regular FFVI from Squaresoft the enemies wouldn't even be able to do enough damage to counteract the effects of regen. Anyway when my party is falling apart Sabin takes a break from doing big damage to heal the party with all the goodies (Life 2, Cure 3, curative summons). Sabin's evasion is well above average as well.

Celes: Here's my super sword woman and universal mage. What's important about Celes is that she plays the role of uber equipment user. She's the only character in my group who can wear heavy armor and use big swords like the Ragnarok and Illumina. Celes has such a high evasion with all this stuff. If I was playing the regular version of FFVI I'd equip her with the "OMG Offering + Genji Glove!" combo. Well just a Black Belt and Cure Ring is good enough for me. It's nice when she counters an attack with the Ragnarok and does Flare on the guy who hit her. It's so easy to pick fight in her command list because her special ability is so lousy. I gotta have at least one of those in the group. More importantly in the final battles Celes serves as the group healer. I equip her with a Gem Box. Life 2 * 2 is insanely useful, or Cure 3 on the whole party and Life 2 to revive the dead person. With the Gem Box you can really turn the tide of a battle quickly. Celes' attack isn't really needed during the final battles because I already have 3 very capable characters beating up the opposition, and keeping the group healthy is extremely important for success.

Terra/Edgar/Gogo/Cyan/Relm: I remember having each of these characters in my main party during certain play-throughs. I prefer Celes over Terra simply because Celes looks better. In my current game I'm setting up Relm for the final battle, though Control won't do much good against the huge final bosses. Oh well, I'll have to put her magic to use (current magic power is at 71). Edgar is half decent when you raise his well below average stats. Drill is his most powerful attack (Chain Saw isn't reliable) and what's the point of having Edgar just for his fight command? Besides Celes already has the good sword anyway. So during the final battles Edgar doesn't really offer anything special to the party. Due to this I probably won't be using him much anymore. Gogo does a nice job emulating Sabin's Bum Rush but I haven't used him in so long because of his weak stats. Like Neal says, Gogo does everything half-assed. Cyan has poor stats and Quadra Slice really doesn't seem to contribute much to the cause during the final battle. Why? Because most of the time he's dead before he can even use the technique. During hard battles Cyan always seems to be the first to die no matter what. Maybe it's his super low evasion. See why I haven't found a good 4th character yet? You know, I'll have to try Shadow sometime. Throw always seems to do good damage and his evasion is above average. Interceptor does an impressive job at blocking attacks for Shadow and countering. Just wait, I'll put together the ultimate party yet. smile.gif

Marvel Shoes provide Regen status. So does Cure Ring. Why waste the slot with the Cure Ring? Better to use Marvel Shoes plus Hero Ring on Gau.

As for your 4th character. I recommend Strago or Shadow. Shadow can achieve 129 MB% with Enhancer, Force Shield, Bard Hat, Force Armor, Merit Award, White Cape and he has the Throw command which is ID. This is a solid character but not real flashy and the same effect (128+ MB% + 9999 dam) can be achieved with many characters.

Strago is the more versatile spellcaster (Spells + Lores) and can achieve 137 MB% with your remaining equipment: Magus Rod, Force Shield, Bard Hat, Force Armor, Merit Award, White Cape. Altho his final stats will not be as impressive as Sabins might be. You may even want to devote Strago as the mage, swap out his White Cape for the GemBox and give Celes a Hero Ring instead. I always go with the GemBox for Strago to really optimize on his superior spellcasting abilities. Too bad he cant cast 2 Lores per round too. First Round let Strago cast BigGuard, second Round cast Life 3 x2, and by Round 3 everyone in the party has Safe, Shell and Life 3. Then let Strago do GrandTrain for big damage (should be 9999 each) on all 4 members of the 2nd Tier of the Esperoid. Not bad.

Aside: Strago starts at L8. that leaves 91 levelups to distribute. 64 go for +2 Magic Power levelups. He will easily be able to do 9999 damage with numerous Spells and Lores. The remaining 22 are split between Vigor and Speed. But no matter how you slice it, Strago is slow. That is perhaps his biggest weakness.

Thanks for pointing that out. I've only been using Marvel Shoes through the last 2 games so I'm still set on using Cure Rings.

It takes a lot of work to get Strago to be effective but those are very nice tactics. Pearl Wind is a nice healing Lore as well, so it looks like there's a lot of positive things going for Strago even though he seems weak at first. You can max out the MBlock stat but in a game where the evasion bug is fixed I wonder how high you can go with the evasion stat. Well thanks for the suggestions Detah.

Same as always: Terra, Sabin, Shadow, Mog.

Terra's got Ultima, Morph, and possibly Gem Box and Economizer if I'm feeling cheap that day. Sabin has all of those awesome (and free) Blitzes. Shadow can throw Imp Halberds and Heal Rods for a quick 9999 each round. And Mog has the Snow Muffler to make sure that I'll never, ever die.

I tend to teach them all every spell, too, if I can.

Well, at that point in the game, I could beat Kefa with just about anyone. The ones I do use are Terra, Relm, Gogo, and Strago.
There are 2 reasons for this.
1) I like the color red. That's the main reason.
2) I like all of their specials!
Everyone has all of the spells, Lores, etc. I usually have gogo with Lores and Tools.

OK, here's my combi:-
1) Sabin-for reasons already explained.
2) Cyan-I just like him. QuadraSlice'll kick real ass since it's a 4-stroke attack and can break the 9999 damage limit per turn. Never mind about the wait-I have my ways of combating that.
3) Relm-Kicks real ass with Ultima.
4) Can vary. Either Celes, Terra or Shadow.
The thing, however, is that Kefka still dies easily. And my characters are only like...Lv.50+! What about the people who have lv99? sbq92, Kefka must die in like, 6-8 hits when you fight him!!! What a walkover...unfortunate that super-powerful monsters don't exist for stat-maxers sad.gif

As pointed out in the FF6 Trivia thread, you can max out MagicBlock% on 6 chars simultaneously. Of course, one only needs to max out 4 for practical purposes. And that changes the optimal setups considerably and gives you more options for which 4 chars to choose. I suspect (but have not confirmed) that you could choose any 4 of the 12 equip-able chars and max all 4 out. For 2 chars, I chose to exchange some MB% in lieu of more powerful attack abilities and more spell options.

All chars are at L99, have optimized Esper levelup bonuses and have all Spells/Skills learned. I have listed my first 2 or 3 rounds of commands for each character.

Terra
Illumina
Paladin Shield
Mystery Veil
Minerva
Hero Ring
White Cape
129% MB
Phoenix
Morph; Ultima versus Tier levels, Fight versus Kefka, Phoenix's Rebirth if Strago and Sabin or Strago and Locke die, otherwise, Strago casts Life 2 twice.

Sabin
Magus Rod (change to Ragnarok after stealing from Girl)
Force Shield
Bards Hat
Force Armor
Merit Award
Offering
Golem
124% MB
Golem's Earth Wall; 4xFight, BumRush (versus Tier critters only) or Mantra

Locke
Magus Rod
Force Shield
Bard's Hat
Force Armor
Merit Award
White Cape
Fenrir
132% MB
Fenrir's Moon Song, utility functions (Remedy, Cure, Support spells), steal Ragnarok from Girl

Strago
Magus Rod
Aegis Shield
Bard's Hat
Tao Robe
GemBox
Economizer
Kirin
90% MB
BigGuard;Life 3 (Strago), Quick, Life 3 (Sabin), Life 3 (Terra); Life 3 (Locke), Quick, Haste 2, Osmose; Kirin's Life Guard; utility functions, Grand Train or Forcefield

Note: by Round 3 I have simulated 3 of the 4 statuses (Safe, Shell and Haste) from the Marvel Shoes for each character. By Round 4 I have all 4 statuses applied. I've found that devoting Strago to defensive casting for the first 4 rounds and freeing up 4 Relic slots is superior to having 4 Merit Awards equipped. The downside to this strategy is that none of the statuses are protected from Kefka's Revenger (aka Dispel on all). This is a rare special attack, so I find it is worth it.

in my top series, all my characters are on lvl 99, and learned every magic spell...so kefka is a cakewalk now and i havent rly played that one in so long, because there is nothing for me to do on it anymore, but i went to kefkas tower and fought that final battle with many combinations, but i found the best 4 are:

Edgar ~> his effective battle tactics draw you to use him frequently thoroughout the game so his levels are usually high

Setzer ~> Offering and fixed dice is a deadly attack, in some cases, depending on how much you use him and the dice, his lvls, ect... this attack can be the most devistating in the game

Gogo ~> S/he can obtain any other characters abilities, so thats a plus, also if all of your characters havent learned all the spells yet, he knows all the spells of the people in your party at the time so thats another big +

the last character depends, my personal preference is Mog, becuz mog is just sweet, i love that he has such a big role in the final fantasy serious, and i think he shoulda been in the movie! i heart.gif mog

I haven't finished it yet, I'm heading off to Kefka's Tower soon though.

1-Setzer: My dedicated magic user, and best character. For Relics, I give him either the Exp. Egg (making his level climb ever higher) or the Safety Bit (I really dont want my most powerful character to die at an unfortunate time) and the Gem Box from Fanatic's Tower. Equipped with Doom Darts (killing some enemies no matter their level or their HP) and Paladin Shield (I've passed it and Ragnarok round all my main characters so they all learn Ultima fast). His arsenal of spells is impressive: Flare, Ultima, Quake, W.Wind, Quartr, Cure3, Haste2, Slow2 etc. X Magic often sees me casting Haste2 then Ultima, from then on dealing around 12000 damage a turn just with Setzer! I never use Slots much anymore, Setzer's just become my magical powerhouse.

2-Gogo: Apart from Mimic (which I use to repeat Setzer's double Ultima - 24000 damage from just two characters!), I've set Gogo to Tools (Chain Saw and Air Anchor - yay), Magic (everyone's spells....drool...but his Mag.Pwr. isn't as high as Setzer's) and Sketch, but I've given him the FakeMustache (since I never use Relm) and Sprint Shoes since someone has to have them. I use Gogo as support basically, either using Mimic to repeat a particularly damaging attack or having him Mimic Umaro's Storm as covering fire. He's also my caster of status-spells. So basically Gogo picks up the slack.

3-Locke: Every party needs a healer, and Locke is it, although he has been outfitted with Fire3, Ice3, Bolt3 and Ultima. Locke's got Life3, Cure3, Regen, every single healing spell in the game, plus Float (for when Setzer's Quake might hurt my own guys) and Warp (for quick escapes). Given him the classic Thief Glove/Sneak Ring combo for better items when using Capture. He's outfitted with the Atma Weapon (he's got the highest HP of any character) and Genji armours.

4-Umaro: And finally the power, completing my set. For Relics Umaro has the Gauntlet (doubles his Bat.Pwr., meaning he does close to 4000 damage just from a normal attack, and also the Blizzard Orb, since the Storm ability it gives you is definitely worthwhile). By far and away the most physically strong, and 80% of enemies often go down after only an attack from Umaro.

My final four characters are the ones I take special pains to keep alive in the beginning rounds, to make the challenge a little better, and use them all the way through.

Sabin He's my favorite character, and the one I use the most, although I don't level him up dramatically over others. Bum Rush is sweet, and a variety of elemental Blitzes doesn't go amiss either. My party is usually lvl 40-55, and packed with all of the Esper skills.

Edgar What would Sabin do without Edgar? I never keep these two apart, it's habit, and Edgar's tools are usually the thing that finishes off Kefka. After Edgar runs out of MP for offensive spells, he goes crazy with that chainsaw!

Locke The world-famous treasure hunter has a spot here too, since he's usually a lvl or two over the others, and a bit faster, as well as being very handy in healing.

Celes Celes is usually my offensive/defensive girl. Once Edgar runs out of MP for magic attacks, she casts and recasts support spells and doubles my healing efforts if i need it, otherwise, she's attacking while Edgar's casting.

My characters are around lvl 50 with no esper stat boosts and only Celes, Terra, and Gogo know magic. Yes, that's right, a no esper group. Most of them have over 100% mblock.

Terra: With gem box + econimizer, along with morph and ultima, she is my main magic user.

Celes: Atma+Illimina+genji glove. She is a good attacker, and she can heal.

Gau: Wind God + 100+mblock = awesome. What, so i use Wind God Gau, I'm not using espers, so some level of cheapness has to be allowed, right?

Setzer: Fixed dice + offering. Need i say more?

I usually need more than 4, tho, so here are the other's i tend to use.

Gogo: In a no esper game, Gogo doesn't have such a disadvantage.

Mog: He's always in my party, cus random battles r teh suc, and for boss fights he has snow muffler with dragoon boots and flying dragon horn.

Locke: Speed is good, ya?

and Strago: Y'know, when regular magic is mostly unavailable, Lores are VERY handy!

i shall use espers no more forever, unless I do a solo or a CES.

Yeah! I have no idea what I'm doing!! (so new)

ooo. For my final four I have...

Edgar: He's by far my strongest and his tools just work so good. Plus he knows all magic (well almost all)

Cyan: I equip him well, plus he knows a ton of magic (i hardly use his swrod tech. too slow!!)

Sabin: Maybe....if my sister plays with me....i can't do the blitz too well.... tongue.gif

Terra: Her magic, baby, is so bomb! I worked hard to get her there

So its all mainly for their magic, except edgar.......tongue.gif
ok im done

Here is who I used:

Locke: Because he was my fastest character, as well as the one who did the most damage. Plus, I always used Locke whenever I got him, and he was almost mandatory in all my parties, which means he knew most of the magic there was to learn.

Celes: She was mostly my mage and healer, since she knew all the spells there was to know, plus she has Gem Box/Economizer combo.

Shadow: Shadow was my third person due to the fact he could throw all those spare weapons, plus he had some magic I could whip out if I needed it.

My fourth character is always a toss up. I usually put in either Sabin, Gogo, Edgar, Terra, or Mog.

Well, my "final four" usually kinda sit out the final fight because the characters before them haven't been used yet, but as for the last ones in my 12-character lineup:

Shadow, Sabin, Strago, Terra. Shadow can be throwing just about anything in my inventory at Kefka, Sabin will of course be blitzing, Strago will deal in mad magic, and Terra will do the same as Strago except plus Morph.

i shall use espers no more forever, unless I do a solo or a CES.

[possible stupid question]What's a CES?[/possible stupid question]

For me, the Esper-equipping-magic-learning stuff was something extra for me to get more interested in the game.
Do you neglect the Espers (and their corresponding level-up bonuses) for the challenge of beating the game without?

That's kind of off-topic, but yeah, I'm not the kind of person that levels up people to the max, so I really don't care about miniscule bonuses and just give people Espers based on what spells I want them to learn; at the end of the game if someone has all the magic (usually just Terra, because of Drain), then I'll give her Zoneseek or Bismark permanently for the bonus.

And now, so my post is actually on topic:

Terra: she has Ultima and stuff, but my ecoomizer and gem box are for Celes, so I generally give her the Excalibur, Atma Weapon, Offering, Genji Glove, and Morph, and then start attacking away.

Celes: Sure, Terra's the best magic user in the game, and in FF VI magic owns, but Morph is better utilized on attack power than on magic power, as Ultima will always deal straight nines. Celes is my black mage with the Economizer, Gem Box, Quick, and Ultima. So much damage.

Strago: statistically he's not a very powerful character, but I am the biggest fan of Big Guard, White Wind, Force Field, and Grand Train. A lot of his time is spent casting Cure 3 and White Wind, though.

Cyan: Again, statistically he isn't so good, but when you use things like Celes casting Ultima x5, Terra on one of her Offering runs, and Strago casting Grand Train, that's usually enough time to charge up for a Quandra Slice and close to 30,000 damage.

My team is depends on who really i have worked up the most but the team i usally find the most effective is as follows.

Locke: I useally have him with the paladin sheild,Atama weapon,Gingji aromor/helmet. Useally i will have him with the sneak ring and the theif glove. Locke i usally pick as my charector so more often then naught he is my strongest. Locke also comes in handy with his speed and stealing ablity no to mention hes a strong fighter.

Terra: Her morph ablity seems to be some what essental for this battle. Usally i have her with a force armor, Agies sheild, crystle helmet and mail. I also usally have her with what ever sword i dont have equiped(she never really fights with me anyways i usally use her as a magic user)

Shadow: I never leave home with out him. I usally have the striker,Force armor(i think not sure been a long time) and his sheild and helmet escape me. I use shadow mostly for his throw ablity which i find to be the most useful in the game next to locke's steal ablity.

Mog: Him, Locke, and Shadow are always on my team if i can help it.
I always give him the pearl lance, agies sheild, force armor, crystle helm. I love mog mostly cause to the moogle charm but also beacuse he is well balanced in magic use and pyshicall attacks.

Terra -- General Asskickingness and Equipment
Celes -- See Above
Locke -- Speed and Steal (I love me an extra Ragnarok)
Sabin -- Blitzes and Physical Attacks

Sometimes I swap Sabin for Edgar. Whatever puts a smile on my face.

(Although, it must be admitted, the first three are there for story reasons. T & C are the main characters of the game, IMO, and you can't have Celes without Locke! Luckily, the gals are rox0ring anyway, and I can put up with Locke's [relative!] mediocrity.)

What's a CES?

Celes Edgar Setzer challenge. They're the only three non-optional characters in the WoR, and so the smallest possible group of characters you can beat the game with. I've done it; it's easier than you might expect, but still fun.
