What's the significance of the machinery books in Cyan's dwelling in Mt. Zozo in the WoR? I know he dislikes technology and machinery when you first meet him, so I assumed it was so that he could come to understand machines better during his free time in the mountain cave. Is there any bonus to getting the books? Does he actually benefit from them at all? I highly doubt it, but it never hurts to ask about these small things (I didn't know you could keep Cid alive by feeding him the fast swimming fish either! laugh.gif).

Well, there was an old programmer's rumour that in a very early alpha, he studied the books, but lost his skills with his sword. He lost SwdTech, but gained the Tools command, and by doing the Cyan's Soul sequence, you got his SwdTech back, and could change between those commands like Gogo.

Oh, don't even get me started on this one. I remeber looking in a lot of FAQ's and they all said that the Books on Machinery was going to be something but then later got canceled during creation so they just left it like that. Then again, thats all I heard.

Well the Book of Secrets was called "Porno Mag" in the Japanese version..that's why Cyan freaks out so bad in that scene, it's funny to see such a man of honor have such a dirty book....as for what function they had, I have no clue.

What's your source on that? It's the first time I've EVER heard that, so I'm more than a bit skeptical.

Well, if that's really what it was in Japan, I'm sure Cyan just read the porno mag for the articles...or maybe that's where he got the material he put in the letters he wrote to Lola...otherwise the "thou"s from his own writing would have been a dead giveaway...laugh.gif

That's weird, Tony--I've never heard of that one either. I HAVE heard of the one whereby Cyan should get the Tools command by learning from those books. As for what would happen to Swdtech after that, I don't know, but what Aron Figaro said here would be pretty cool. Especially since his Swdtechs take forever to charge up...

That tools command info screeeeeams false rumor. I think Cyan is the type of purpose who always seeks to quietly better himself, hence while he is holed up in a cave writing to Lola, he is also studying machinery, something he had always found foreign til his normal life went into upheaval.

Proof:

This is located at Gamefaqs

It's at Gamefaqs, under the "Changes" Faq. It's towards the end of the FAQ under micellaneous changes. Here's the actual excerpt, Completely intact:

Misc. changes:

-You can rename Cayenne's Special Sword Technique attacks, but only in Kanji, no kana.
-Customize controls option, in Config menu.
-No black and white title screen when beginning, goes immediately to the regular title screen.
-Title screen says "Final Fantasy VI", also theres an Amano-ish Tina on Magic Armor between
Final and Fantasy, it's awesome.
-Characters had a Job/Class name (see above).
-While equpping things, it shows the quantity you have left.
-Item names are limited to 8 characters, unlike FFIII having been expanded to a limit of 12 (13?).
-Cayenne in FFIII had Machinery books, in FFVI, he had a Machinery book AND a porn mag! SeX0r
-Ted Woolsey isn't in the Magic Armor mode7 credits screen.
-Money is Gil.

This person's translations are more than dead on consistently throughout the fact, so that leads me to believe this is true. I mean, there was a porno mag in FFIV so why not in FFVI too? Plus, if Cyan is in your party when you open the treasure chest, he freaks out for no apparent reason in the US version....if a porno mag was in the chest, he'd have good reason to be panicky...

I think it's true.

There is something like that in ff iv. If you go into the secret developers room you can find "smut" hidden on a shelf and get it by killing an enemy that looks like a bomb.

Let's not forget the dirty magazine Irvine leaves out for Rinoa and Squall also. tongue.gif

Square is clearly not afraid of adding a little "porno" here and there in their games. My brother, who's currently spending two and a half years teaching in Japan, tells me that their standards of what is acceptable and what is not are much different in their culture, and it's not uncommon to find such magazines lying around the houses of respectable and nice people, and they are not ashamed for them to be seen. He told me one gentleman was browsing porn on the internet with his elderly prudent grandmother right there by him, and she didn't care in the least. It's just a cultural difference. It's sort of taboo to most folks in the US, obviously, which is why if it were really there in the original version it was taken out.

PLEASE NOTE I am not speaking ill of Japanese culture here. I am just pointing out that there is a difference in cultural standards of acceptability.

Hentai...URK!! I LOVE EVERYTHING about Japan AND it's cukture, but the mention of that cursed name makes my skin crawl...! HORRID stuff, that!! Drawn exclusively for perverted nuts like themselves...

I do hope I haven't offended anyone by saying that. I do realise tt sometimes nudity ain't all about perversity, but unfortunately, it seems that most of the time it is. *Sigh...*

I found a screenshot (http://www.rpgclassics.com/shrines/snes/ff6/walkthrough/walkr5.shtml)of that scene with Cyan's books at rpgclassics.com: the FFVI walkthrough. It shows that the chest contains:
"Machinery Manual"
"Book of Secrets"

The second one is actually suspicious. But, whatever...

By the way, I've also seen a "Playb..." screenshot from FFV, so I guess this stuff is rather common. The screenshot is from the library, where you reshelve the books.

Majik Monkee suggested that Cyan might have picked up his "Book of Secrets" in order to learn how to write "normally" (as opposed to the "Mr. Thou" style). I agree with that suggestion, since that's because learning a different style would be the only way he could have fooled Lola into thinking that he was her deceased boyfriend.

I would really hate it if Cyan learned to use Edgar's tools. For one thing, it would be pointless. For another thing, it would be ridiculous. Why would the creators make it so 3 characters could use tools?

Who uses them besides Edgar? He's the only one I knew of in the game who was able to do that to this point...

Sorry for digressing, anyway...

Yeah, and Iggy, I don't mean the Japanese only, I mean everyone who does this, should they be Japanese, European or anyone else. As I said, I love EVERYTHING about Japan-except that.

And about what the Machinery book might do: In the WoR, I talked to Cyan and founf him in the interior of the Falcon, examining it and saying, "What an amazing device!" Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you don't find the Machinery Book, he will be doing something else-something unrelated to machines. However, other than this, I don't thnk that the books might do anything else.
