Kefka is a pretty cool villain, but I think a close runner up for favorite villain of mine in FFVI would have to be Ultros. I love his stupid wise cracks and his cheesy grin, and though he can be annoying at times, I usually get a kick out of fighting him.
I got to thinking, though, that he's not really a chief bad guy as far as the plot is concerned. Yes, he shows up over and over to fight you at inopportune times, but who's side is he on, anyway? My theory is that he was at the wrong place at the wrong time at the Lete River, and every encounter after that is to pay you back for that first battle. I originally thought he was some kind of wierd servant of the Empire, but why would the Empire want him to attack you in the Espers' hiding place before you'd accomplished your mission there? True, he does show up to fight you along with the Empires' air guards on your way to the Floating Continent, but I think that's just a matter of coincidence. Being relatively new to FF forums of any kind, I've never really heard anyone else's thoughts or theories on Ultros, if indeed there are any, and I'd be interested to hear what you think. Who is he? What is he? Why is he? ![]() -------------------- You know me, you just wish you didn't... "Uwee hee hee! Don't tease the octopus, kids!" -Ultros- "Don't let the smooth taste fool you..." |

I think Ultros was placed intop the game for one of several reasons.
1) They needed/wanted a boss who would re-appear several times. 2) They needed/wanted some comedy relief. 3) Having to fight a giant Purple octopus is VERY original, so why not? While these reasons do not sound flattering, I think they are most likely. Oh, and I am a HUGE Ultros fan. I had made a Favorite Boss thread a LONG time ago. I went for Ultros, as did many other members. He's great. This post has been edited by Spoony Bard on 17th March 2004 16:01 |

i'd have to say he probably had a pretty bad life and just looks to be mean to people, and the returners represent good to him. Because he is soo evil, he feels the need to get in the way of good. At least thats my take on it.... Cool topic

Ultros is one confused character. He wants a pure evil image, be he is just a big softie. Like in the cave, when he becomes Uncle Ulty(or wichever), he seems very sentimental towards Relm. He is just a big priss ment for comic relief, but does not achieve his goal. Overall, I say he is a waste of time, but where would we be without him?

Well, let's see. In the third Ultros fight, he does mention something about Siegfried. I have no idea how those two are tied up, but there is a connection.

That would be amusing to have Ultros in your party, sort of like an Umaro or Gau. Maybe he could have had automatic rages, but done unique stuff like blind the enemies with ink, etc.
FF4 wasn't very funny, and I applaud the risk taking effort to put some humor in FFVI. That's part of what I love about it...it's in depth and emotionally driven, but it doesn't take itself too seriously all the time (see also Kefka). It seems very well balanced overall. With all the Seigfried (sp?) plot related stuff, I expected some kind of conclusion or climax involving him, but there never was any, which surprised me a bit. Maybe the developers started down that road and then forgot halfway through development. Or maybe it's just so well hidden we'll never find it in our lifetime. ![]() -------------------- You know me, you just wish you didn't... "Uwee hee hee! I think Ultros and Siegfried had some band of thugs who were just around to mess people up and find treasure for money, but that whole sub-plot was never completed. Plus Ultros just likes to cause trouble for his own entertainment. He tends to be where the action is to stick a wrench in the gears. He definately makes a significant presence and does a lot to lighten up the game. FFVII could have used some comic relief badly. Ultros is just another reason why FFVI is so great. Him and Kefka make the bad guy side humorous, something missing from most other FFs.

Yeah, I've always thought that Ultros hounded you because you beat him that first time on the river. But, how that octopus learned how to walk, climb, and even fly is beyond me.

Ultros was mainly for comic relief, but I guess while Square was at it they decided to do a great job with it. So there you have a highly intelligent (ability to talk, walk, run, negotiate, work as receptionist, etc.) but extraordinarily foolish (inability to recognize when he's being a complete @$$hole and is extremely annoying to everybody). His role is just to get into your way, and I'm pretty sure that's because of that Lete River battle that he's mad at you. For an octopus, he's exceedingly intelligent, but still too dumb to act like a sensible human being.
Nevertheless, I get a kick out of running into him. Every time. Maybe it's because he's so stupid and silly that it's actually funny. And of course, I feel bad for that miserable big purple eight-legged idiot. You just have to. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! I don't think he's mad at you for the Lete river incident, he just seems to enjoy picking a fight with you. He does seem generally good natured about the whole thing ("Look, I'm a receptionist!"), and never really gets mad at you. He's just playing. I think his purpose in the game (besides humor) is to provide boss battles at points in the game where there is no boss that would fit the plot. Really, who would you fight for a boss at the end of the lete river? Or the Opera house? Or the cave? These are places where you've been playing long enough to merit a new boss or mini-boss battle, yet no boss seems to fit story. So, just throw in Ultros to revel in the Chaos. That's my take.

Ultros was fairly entertaining but he just dissappeared after the airship area (one of the few areas of fair difficulty in the game) and he couldve stayed and really made an impact...also what was up with Chupon? He was just dragged in for no apparent reason...

Chupon is probably there to keep the Ultros battles from becoming redundant. During the first battle Ultros just hits you with tentacle and ink. The second time around he uses imp and muddle attacks in the interesting opera stage setting. The third time he has Fire 3, and you have to sketch him with Relm. So the forth time instead of simply adding more attacks to his repertoire, Square throws in a second sidekick character. Being Ultros' dumb sidekick makes things even more comical. Just when you thought you've seen your share of idiots in this game, here comes another one.

I agree...Chupon used to look kind of scary to me back in the old days, but now I realize he's pretty much just another clod there to try to muddle things up in an opportunistic way. On top of that, Ultros can do a lot of stuff, but they probably couldn't have convinced me he could fly...but by riding on Chupon, he was able to molest you on the airship. That, and Chupons ability to sneeze you off the ship for plot purposes give him a little use beyond just being one of Ultro's dumb buddies. Someone had mentioned that it seemed Ultros and Siegfried were allies...it would have been interesting to see an Ultros/Siegfried fight against your characters, maybe at a later point in the game. I don't think Ultros had truly worn out his "welcome" by the last time you fight him...I felt sort of sad when I realized he wouldn't be fighting me anymore in the WoR.
On a side note, I think Ultros' name is one of the funniest things about him. It sounds like "Ultra", which implies great things, but really, in the scheme of things, he's pretty small potatoes. I don't think I'd be lying if I said I'd never lost one of the Ultros battles (besides having Banon killed a couple of times when I first started playing), and if you get in a "rhythm", he's very easy. I think the designers may have known his name would be a little ill fitting, and probably went along with it for the whole comic aspect. -------------------- You know me, you just wish you didn't... I think they just wanted a boss for the Lete River, so they copied Octomamm from IV. But they didn't want to make it obvious, so they had him come back like an infected wart.

Hmmm...Ultros is much easier than Octomamm was, and has a lot more personality. I'm not sure the designers were trying to copy the boss from 4, otherwise they should have set it up so you have to fight all his tentacles as seperate enemies. Imagine having to do that every time you fought him...that would get old REAL quickly...

Ultros was actually Chupon's sidekick. That's why he was the receptionist at the Colosseum. Chupon was the one who oversaw all the battles.

I don't know...I always viewed Chupon as the dumb one. Ultros is pretty dumb himself, but he seems to be the smarter of the two. He also seems to operate off personal motives, rather than instructions from someone/something else. His antics at the Opera House seem to be kind of spur of the moment, and the things he says lead me to think he's operating on his own whims. I'm not really sure if the designers had future plans for Chupon, but they sure didn't use him much. Thank goodness he doesn't show up as much as Ultros.

In most games in FF, there is usually a re-occuring character, such as the turks in FF7 and Seymore in FF10, some play bigger plot roles in others though. Ultros is the guy for the job in FF6...he is just a cool boss, not to hard but still challenging the first time u play through. Siegfreds connection to the game is somewhat mysterious...But you people are overlooking an important fact about many of the rumors about daryl, general leo, gogo, and so on...Square is a successful gaming company for a reason, they leave things hanging, they dont answer every question, that drives us to want more ya know? it makes it more entertaining and ALSO leaves the opportunity to go with those unfinished lines of plot in later games, if they desire.
By the way, Chupon is the most annoying character in any game ive ever played with the exception of one in super ghouls n ghosts |

Yes, Ultros is there for comic relief, but you also need a boss battle evey now and then. It seems that even before the WOR there were several wandering boss monsters (and humans) but the meanset ones were sealed up (Phunbaba, 8 dragons). Enter Ultros. He's a boss, but not too tough, not too mean. He's self-motivated; he attracts sidekicks; he cohorts with other baddies. That whole Sigfried connection... what's up with that? Sure, he seems mysterious and such, but why didn't that ever go anywhere? That was a big disappointment.
By the time you get to the Colosseum, fighters from the world over have come together to see who is the ultimate champion. Ultros knows he isn't that good. Sigfried fights you in one battle. Chupon, that's Master Chupon now, will fight anyone for their useless stuff. He's the muscle behind that operation. Of course, that's why I like to beat him up so much. ![]() -------------------- Food is like magic in my ears. - Djibriel Ogopogo lives. |

I always consderd Ultros fairly witty...not all that dumb at all (i mean he can string sentances together better than Umaro who seemed much more...likely...to be able to talk) and Chupon is...whatever is lower than idiot, butmuch stronger so now i pose this quesion. Who would win in an ultros vs chupon fight? Note that they are opposite elements and assume that terrain wasnt a factor.

The reason Ultros is in this game is because Gilgamesh isn't. Gotta love recurring bosses/comic relief.
