I don't fancy saving him - it just wastes time for nothing. Whereas if he dies, it takes less time, and Celes survives yet another near-death situation, even though this time it was of her own making.

The first two times I played the game I just let him die and wondered what's the point. The third time I played(why yes,I AM slow) I figured out that I can save him.Disappointing experience really, but I start to feel bad if I just let him lie there...lifeless..cold..dead.

When I first played the game, I didn't know where the beach was so I could find the fish, so he died, and it looked great. It fit the mood at the time. However, now that I know how to save him, I can't get hyself to kill him, so I try to keep him alive.

The first time I played, he died, and it looked to me as it was something written in the game script. It was my little sister (yes, FF VI is a family tradition) that found out he could be saved. Always listen to your sisters if you can...Anyway, since the first time, I always let him die just to see the scene with Celes.

One of my friends who had already played the game clued me into saving Cid, so I did the first time. Since then, I've let him die just to see what happens, and I have to admit I like that version more.

I agree with Mr. Thou, it does look like he was meant to die (he serves no purpose for the rest of the story too). Furthermore it's definitely more dramatic. The suicide scene establishes a forboding atmosphere that you're not able to shake off until you have the whole team back together and are ready to jump into Kefka's tower (or maybe when you find Locke).

Lately I've been playing through FFVI with a focus on story elements instead of, um, randomness (like I used to). So, Celes is always my leader in the World of Ruin, because I think that half of the game is really her story; I keep her and Locke next to each other, etc. Since the story is about 800 times better when Cid dies, I kill him. Without remorse! Because if you don't kill Cid, you don't see the scene with the bird, which is one of the great FF metaphors. A bird wearing a bandanna revives Celes? She asks why he didn't let her be? It's wonderful.

Hmm. Â What I like about it is that it really doesn't have to be Locke's bandanna. Â She just needs a reason to hope, and she gets one. Â I don't think the bird "nursed her back to health" or whatever that nonsense was, it just shows her there might be a chance, and that gives her faith. (There's a great fanfic about that, actually, called "Locke's Bandanna" by D.N. Austen. Â It's at RPGamer, here, but I don't think they permit direct linking. Â Anyway.) Personally, I think it's a bit more ridiculous that after you save Cid's life, and you get an airship, you don't take him off that depressing island. My first time through I didn't know how to save him. Now that I know I always end up saving him, even though I hate doing it...not only is it an annoying process, but the cinema for him dying is much cooler. What do you do?

I let him live because I felt sorry for just letting him die, even though I found out from the internet that you could let him either live or die. But later (through save-state) I let him die just to see the scene that would ensue, and I thought that that was more interesting (although the Cid dies scene really shouldn't be playing Celes's theme).
He is useless, even if he lives, though, admittedly. I never even wondered why they didnt take him off the island if he lived...I dont think any of them (Celes excluded) really cared about him at all. The way i see it he is the problem and the island was the solution.

I just can't let the guy die. Even though he lives a miserable existance through the rest of the game, I still like knowing that at least he's alive. I really wish that Square would have rewarded you more for saving him though. Even just having him on the airship to heal your guys or something would have been cool. I didn't know you could save him the first time through.

I must say that saving Cid = a lot more work than letting him die with no apparant reward. The game goes to such lengths to drive Celes toward despair, from the gloomy island with no land in sight, to the putrid music, dying monsters, and dark waters that seemingly make up the rest of the known world...heck, I was about ready to give up all up myself! Then the old fart kicked the bucket, and that really was the last straw, especially since I couldn't find the raft, even with his letter. That depressing cut scene where Celes jumps off the cliff really does add the icing to the cake of depressingness, and when I learned you could save Cid later on and did it, I felt kind of cheated. I was robbed of the sensation I had the first time I played the game of being the last human alive in world that wasn't worth living in.
If people say that Aeris' death scene was sadder than Cid's, I'd say it's just a matter of preference. Actually, what got me when Aeris died was in small part the dramatic musical score and vivid cut scenes, but more to the point, the fact that she was one of the playable characters, and had become a big part of the game. Cid was an agent of the enemy for most of the game, and there wasn't much time for attachment or character development when he joins the good guys, so while I felt very sad for Celes, I didn't feel the sense of loss about Cid biting the dust as I did about Aeris. Being a true fan of all that is FF, though, fancy visuals and music don't dictate for me whether one scene is better than another, story and emotional attachment do. ![]() I actually find Rachel's brief resurrection one of the most depressing scenes in the game, easily on par with the death of Cid. If I were Locke, I'd go jump off a bridge after that...I don't know how he can say he feels "lighter than air"...what a cold hearted snake! ![]() This post has been edited by Majik Monkee on 19th March 2004 01:43 -------------------- You know me, you just wish you didn't... Hohoho....actually, Majik Monkee, I think they are using an age-old storyline in the Rachel-Cid scene. A lover is emotionally burdened by his opinion that he “was not there for her when she needed him mostâ€. So when Rachel comes out and says “it’s not your fault,†Locke feels “lighter than air†because his burden has been removed. And although it’s quite possible that Locke could feel even guiltier because of that since he firmly believes it’s his fault, the whole storyline is AWFULLY unoriginal, unlike many other facets of FF6
![]() And about Cid…I make a deliberate effort to save him. I’m like that, see, I don’t want 2 see someone die if I ca help it-EVEN THOUGH it might be in a video game. And I am REALLY pissed that the makers of FF6 had to let his story end just there. How come the people who kill him get a better scene than the people who save him, despite the fact that saving him requires more effort? UNFAIR!!! ![]() -------------------- Student of CCS, Grandmaster of Alternative Literature and Musical Passionista at your service!!! |

Let him die! As most people have said, it is a waste of time to save him, and the storyline is better if he dies.
But I don't think anyone has said this part: If you save Cid, are you really doing him a favor? He walks around an island for the rest of his life, knowing how to say only one line. For the love of God, he's probably going insane with boredom! Do him a favor! End his life! -------------------- Little miss Muffet, sat on her tuffet, Eating her curds and... Sorry if this straying off topic, but...
In reference to that whole Rachel/Locke thing, I find it strange that she knows he's felt burdened by guilt...wasn't she dead right after and ever since the accident? For all she would know, Locke went off and got married after she died and has been whooping it up ever since (that wouldn't explain why he would bother to bring her back, but you know...). She seems to know a lot about what's been going on in the world for someone who's spent so long preserved by herbs and lying in a bed. Back on topic now... I still don't think Cid's death is worth crying over, or preventing for that matter. Back when I was playing through for the first few times, my girlfriend, who didn't play the game, but watched me play, saw both the Cid scene and the Rachel scene in the game. Without any knowledge of who the characters were, the Rachel scene caused her to cry, but she was unaffected by the death of Cid and Celes' subsequent suicide attempt. Years later, when she watched the death of Aeris in FF7, the waterworks came on again. Cid is just kind of an unimportant old fart, and I couldn't even remember who he was the first time I woke up on the solitary island. I don't think he makes enough impact in the game to be worth saving or crying over. Sorry, Cid...better luck next time... ![]() -------------------- You know me, you just wish you didn't...
