Nintendo boasts, Sony counters.
Nintendo has announced that their stock of Gamecube is starting to sell out in North America. The company has stated that the demand has been so high, particularly considering the holiday season ended months ago, that it is pulling units from other markets to send to the continent. Nintendo representative Perrin Kapaln is quoted as saying, "I'd say about 50 percent of our stores are out." Last year at this time, Nintendo had to halt GameCube production because of a large overstock. What a difference time and a massive price cut can make. Sony countered this announcement with one of their own: the 25th million Playstation 2 in North America has been sold. Sony is also proud of the fact that 2.6 of these units have been used online while Microsoft has 750,000 subscribers to Xbox Live. /****/ I won't be surprised if the Microsoft makes an announcement about Xbox sales figures in the next day or two. If I were rich, I'd add a sales figure to each too. -------------------- "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." - Aristotle |

I'm glad to hear evidence that systems are selling well. Of course the main thing I care about is the quality of the games... but it just sucks when great systems (like the last couple Sega ones) go under. I hope the game industry can be more stable than it was in the late 90's so we don't get stuck paying for systems that only end up getting a few good games.

I now wonder if the continued sucess of the PS2 is to balme for the recent delaying of the PSP's European and North American release dates. I belive it is, as Sony knows that theres a major risk from trying to beat the Game Boy, so they may try and have a christmas to make cash at hoem from it, whislt the North American and Euro markets take up more money to reduce a potential loss.
Some very good news for the gamecube i think. Its so nice to see a console you can juggle that isnt a handheld doing better... -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

Maybe this will be a reality check for console makers. Remember when new consoles never costed more than $150? Unless I'm imagining things that's the way it always was before. Who the hell are they marketing $300 systems to? People who choose to go to college will be broke for the next 40 years of their lives. Kids ain't got no $300 laying around and parents won't be dishing out that kind of cash for a video game system. Well the market is saturated with these super powerful systems. If the companies want to run a profitable business they should focus on games for the next few years instead of expensive hardware. The more expensive a generation of gaming consoles is, the longer that generation should last. Games are very profitable, systems arn't. But it's a rough world and every console maker has to be the best and raise the bar again and again. This puts a lot of unnecessary stress on the companies and the weaker ones will fall out, like Sega.

Its nice to see the 'Cube is doing better. I've always been a fan of the Big N ,
and it would have been a shame to see Nintendo reduced to a puppet company like Sega. Lets hope they can release MORE original games while sticking to franchies such as Metroid and Zelda. -------------------- Chrono Triggers rock super-group: Ozzie - lead singer from Black Sabbath Flea - Bassist from Red Hot Chilli Peppers Slash - Guitarist from Guns 'n' Roses He drinks and smokes his cares away His heart is in the lonely way Living in the ruins Of a castle built on sand... Uh, go Nintendo? I'm really not very impressed with the Game Cube, myself. I was given one as an unsolicited gift by my ex-boyfriend, who bought it used. I didn't really get the impression that they were very popular. Maybe I just hang in different circles.

My question is what Nintendo's next console system is going to be like and that if it will have a DVD function, online play, and backward compatibility(play GC Games).
