Okay, well this topic is mainly about what everyone else thinks a FF Fighting Game would be like. I however have been creating my own ideas for this project but I won't tell about them until next week.

I guess that would be appropiate, by that I mean by not making the FF series seem to be used alot. If you know what I mean, I don't think i made that clear enough. Anyway, I remember when all those Dragonball Z fighting games came out and then they made an RPG of it. I think it is fun to experiment with these kind of things.
That reminds me... since they have lots of RPG-Makers, do they have other makers that would do that sort of stuff. I'm using a public computer so I can't exactly search for that. This post has been edited by Fezzness on 3rd March 2004 17:13 |

If such a game was made it better include all FF characters from all games. Heck, I'll take any new game that has the SNES characters in 3D.

Well, the closest thing is Ehergeiz which is an awesome game, but not what you're thinking. I think that an FF fighting game would be as good as they made it. Persoonally, I think that in a good fighting game, you should be able to replace all the chars with identical wire-frames and still have a good game. Then, insert FF chars and, awesome!. But, if they rush it, like so many games seem to be now adays, then it maay be another highly hyped game that just plain wasn't very good.

Yea they had Fightermaker for the PSX but it was really hard to use and the results weren't very pretty. Plus the acctual fighting in the game was really really bad 3d style fighting. -------------------- <Nealio> Seymour sounds like evil Winnie the Pooh |

I think they should go 2D like Street Fighter, except weapon based, and on a console. Just imagine Terra and Auron swinging swords at eachother or Tifa jumping in with a kick to Sabin for a combo.

I've thought Square should make a FF Fighting game for a few years now. Each character could have special moves that would stem from the abilites they had in the game.
Cecil could have some sort of protect move and natural cure magic. Terra could have Morph and some fire magic. Cloud would have his Limit Breaks. Other moves could be thrown in to fill in gaps. As for weapons each character starts out with their starting weapon and you can un-lock more. Maybe about 5 weapons to un-lock per character. And some characters can equip the same weapons, like the Excalibur. The weapons could improve strength but might decrease speed or some other attribute. Or the weapon could be weak but improve speed. And have Accessory slots for each character so you can give them additional abilites. Like magicite or materia to give them extra magic, moves, or summons. But have restrictions on what some people can equip. Also have some actual equipment to put in the accessory slots to raise stats instead of giving abilities. Like shields and helmets for defense, or earrings to raise magic power. I think the game would do better in 3D, with the ideas I have. But a 2D game would no doubt be faster and more intense. I'd like the fighting to be a combination of Evil Zone, Tobal, Ehergeiz, and Guilty Gear X2. Evil Zone - good ideas and flashy. Tobal - nice combo variety, good counters, throws, dodging, good blocking, RPG-ish adventure mode (run around a dungeon, kill stuff, get stronger). Ehergeiz - excellent counter system, but hard (you can counter just about anything if you're good enough), also good combo variety. Guilty Gear X2 - very fast, flashy, ultra-mega-super moves If you've played these games you probably know what I'm talking about. -------------------- -- You're Gonna Carry That Weight -- |

I'd prefer it to be 2D, but then I don't like 3D fighters anyway. I think characters should be limited to abilities that they'd learn on their own, without outside influences (ie, no Materia, Espers, GFs, etc), or else there'd simply be a lot of "cloning". That would be a problem for the magic users too, since there aren't very many one-game-only spells. Overall, I don't think it would be a very balanced game if whoever was creating it tried to stick too closely to a given character's respective RPG abilities. However, I do agree that it would be fun just to have FF characters beating the bloody hell out of each other.

As a non-fan of 3d fighters, I loved Soul Calibur 2. It would be very interesting to see this in an FF-style, and the weapons idea (power vs. speed) would be a great addition too, as would magicite and stuff.

Ah, a 2-D Fighter would be incredible, preferably with Guilty Gear-esque graphics. I can just imagine playing as Setzer and unleashing my fixed dice on my opponent--or even slot only to get embarrassed by the occasional Lagomorph

Not to mention areas in which the characters would fight. The underground or Caves of Narshe would be interesting. Wouldn't airships be used for some reason. Like retreating or something that won't give the character way too far of an advantage. Golbez vs. Kefka...

Here we go, a new board member shotgunning his ideas to you all...
You realize the game would have a HUGE roster of characters if you have everyone. You can have too many characters (ie: too many to memorize how to fight against), as well as certain trends of characters getting redundant (ie: shotokan-style, charge-style, combo-style, etc.). Instead of paying attention in class, I planned out a roster that is reduced, but still quite huge. Every FF is represented by a team of three characters, you can select such a team or one of your own of three characters you can tag in/out. Even if you stop at FFX (FFXI doesn't fit, FFXII is too new to refer to), there's 30 characters you already have. Along with those characters, you have unlockable ones (what fighting game doesnt have unlockable characters?) in the neighborhood of 14. Each team has their unlockable character, and some of the bosses are playable. I tried to balance the roster, like you'd find only one black mage, as well as give smaller role characters more air time *cough*Freya, Griever*cough* A 3D fighter would be too rushed with that many characters, but a 2D fighter can be astronomically good in the same time frame (combat frame timing instead of polygon rendering). Here's a rundown of most of the characters I grouped. Many have commentary. FF installments (III~X, not sure of I, forgot II's names) are separated by line space, unlockable by an asterisk: Sage- fights with a book Black Knight Onion Kid *Dark Cloud- has a full-screen auto-special every 30 seconds Cecil - has black knight/ paladin alter-egoes Kain Edge *Golbez Bartz - select from Mystic Knight, Samurai, Blue Wizard classes Faris- select from Dancer, Ninja, Summoner classes Galuf- select from Blue Mage, Time Wizard, Monster Tamer *Gilgamesh- Excalipur super is no-damage dizzy move, Excalibur is high damage lv 2 version of Excalipur Celes- her runic blade super lets her stock an absorbed opponent special/super Setzer Gogo- his super can literally clone opponents for a round, but lacks his own supers *Kefka- super is Light of Judgement ^^ Cloud- Aeris - she summon KoTR as a super Vincent- supers match his limit breaks ![]() *Sephiroth Squall- has Seifer backup, Renzokuken (no finish) super is 40 second custom combo Selphie Zell- combo-crazy *Griever Zidane- super is Trance, gives him round-long custom combos Freya Vivi *Fratley- totally opposite Freya in controls, has 1-hit instant KO super Tidus Yuna- conceals a quick-fire pistol ^^ Auron- can stun you instantly *Jecht- some specials and supers incorporate Sin **Bahamut- super is unavoidable **Chaos **Omega Weapon A fighting game engine most similar to the idea is from Street Fighter III: Third Strike, where you can't button mash. I'd say GGXX, but it doesn't seem to have the more precise button command input during frames. Also, it's messy to have too much 'stuff' happen onscreen like those flashes of lights from simply moving. Just so long as the game doesn't button mash, it can't go wrong as a fighting game. It may seem I favor anti-button mashing, but that's where the skill is. There's no cheap character, but ther can be several top tier ones in my list. This game has got to be a good fighting game more than a fan pleaser. |

That actually sounds like a pretty good idea,I just wouldn't use characters from only one FF game...it should be expanded over all of the fav. characters known world wide...no adding stupid one like Yuffie or something lol and they really better not put Cait Sith in it haha.

Anyone know the names of FFII's characters? I cut FFII out of the plan because I don't their names, and FFI would look out of place with FFII between it and FFIII.

I think of the concept going better like MK:DA sort of. 3d maps, mostly fist fighting, but you can pull out a weapon and use it if you want. MK had alot of decent combos too. I think that weapon system would go extremely well. Specials would be like spells for mages- like Terra would hurl fire at her enemies. And for like Ninjas they would throw stuff. Like i'm thinking shadow would unleash waves of shurikens, and edge might throw a sword or something. Fatalities would rock. Like X Zone maybe for an FF6 character, or cloud does Omnislash, Barret shoots them full of holes (Jax Anyone?), Kain would jump up then smash their heads on on landing. Stuff like that.

If they made a SSBM esque Final Fantasy game. That would sell like wildfire.
The closest you would get to a FF fighter would be Soul Calibur 2. Imagine Rydia with Ivy's move set. Edge would never attack because of the drooling. A ff6 fighter would work best. Each character fights the other to face the final incarnation of Kefka. |

I totally agree with Morgue, if it were like ssbm
But they should have every ff char and maybe even add in like shinra or a main boss like sepiroth or kefka or a chocobo! there should be well known weapons magic and accesories involved! Someone should write a letter to Squareenix about this and let it be known! let this letter have a lot of peoples opinions from this site enclosed too or something... -------------------- <DrkMagimaster282> MWAHAHA. How about just making job classes fight it out? Knight vs. Dragoon, Ninja vs Bard, Mimic vs Black Mage. Knights have good power and lots of defense, while Dragoons can jump and have long range due to their spears and skills, Ninjas have good long range attacks and speed, Bards can power up different aspects of themselves with their songs, Mimics can pull insane combos and use their opponent's skills, and all offensive mages can use their respective projectile skills like Fire, etc. Callers can summon a monster to fight for them (like Ifrit), but only one at a time, and they basically stand aside and control the monster (a la Shang Tsung, except he morphs). Thieves are really fast and can cloak themselves. They also have good evade. Samurai have a one-hit kill combo and can throw coins for heavy damage that also hurts them. Dancers can turn you to stone and use "Dancing Sword" which does variable damage like the sword in FFV, although there's a chance they'll absorb HP (or deal 4x damage!). White mages can cast protect or shell to defend from either physical or magical attacks (skills, for simplicity's sake - every job's special attacks) and even heal a little bit. Monks have exceptional power. Etc, etc.
Of course, like in DBZ Hyper Dimension, the life meter will be accompanied by a number to determine HP. Maybe also include MP as a sub-bar (a la Gundam Endless Duel's ammo meter). Each class has a set maximum MP (meaning mages get more because they are more reliant on MP) and MP can be increased by attacking the enemy (as seen in Gundam Endless Duel's ammo meter). Add to this a story mode for each job, allowing them to gain levels as they progress and fight every job class. Between battles, they can train by fighting "random enemies" - these are 1 on 1 battles against goblins, tonberries, chimeras, whatever. Even better, make special 2 on 1 or even 2 on 2 battles where mages can team up with monks to cover their weaknesses. While fighting through story mode, they can collect items as well, such as armor and weapons, and do side quests where they fight monster bosses to collect EXP and prizes, just like FF side-quests. Ultimately, these characters can be saved to a memory card and you can fight your friend's story mode character too. Of course, you can always use the default characters for even match-ups, but at least story mode will bring more replay value. Unlockable characters? Chocobo, moogle, moomba! Stages? I haven't decided yet. Random early-FF locations maybe, like on board an airship, Gulug volcano, underground (FF4), etc. Comments? -------------------- Lou: There's a couple of guys fighting down at the aquarium, Chief. Wiggum: Do they still sell those frozen bananas? Lou: I think so. Wiggum: Let's roll. |

Quote (Kresin @ 23rd September 2004 02:13) oh and if you tried to suggest it to Enix, they would shoot the idea down as soon as they got it. Not if they smell the lifeblood of economies in the water. Basically, you couldn't have every character: thats well over 100 people, right? So, having job classes is the way to go as every character does fit more or less into a job class. Except in FF8 but it can go and fething hang... Named characters would be 'Special' Characters, with a few unique moves no other of thier class has. The other's could be user created and special moves selected from a list. Then theres enemies. This could be a cool little game,if as hypothetical as the FF4 RTS , but one that would indeed make money. So if anyone mails the plans off Don't forget the fact that it would make money for the sake of whatever you hold dear! Mind you, some of the status effects may present a snag if you were to implement them. Poison and the like is obviously not going to cause a problem, but what of the ones a little more inhibiting to balance in a fighting game? Stop would last all of five seconds, Freeze, ditto, Sleep virtually useless (no change there then) , Confuse null and void unless theres a team mode, Insta-Death attacks and Stone probably only as finishers... Mini, Frog, Imp, Pig may be problematic also. And one last idea I had: if theres a team battle mode of some sort, leave the KO'ed members lying around? I reckon it would be a nice touch to trip over the other guy you just kicked the head of in, and get walloped by his mate. I like the SSBM idea with just FF7, 9, and 10 characters with secret characters like Cecil and Kain and a couple FF6 characters thrown in. And maybe the ability to play as a chocobo and kick people. I was gonna suggest mugen, but I got beaten to it. :) There's also C++, but for some strange reason I never quite understood people always spend months looking for a 'maker' type program when they could invest that time and get complete developement freedom with a programming language. Oh well.
I think it'd be interesting to have a KoF-like game with teams representing each game. This limits the characters you can have, but let's be honest here, too many characters would suck. My idea of a roster, assuming 3 characters per team (as has been the case for most iterations of KoF), would go as follows. I've purposefully omitted the NES FFs and FF5 because character individuality isn't very present in any of them. That is, no character has any defining abilities. FF4 Cecil - Mainly flashy holy sword attacks. A rather generic character; you can't quite use white magic in a fighting game. :P Kain - Cuz hey, Kain da man, yo. Most of his moves would be triggered in the air. I figure he'd handle like Kim overall. Edge - Throw FTW. Makes for good projectile attacks. I'd see him being played a little like Hanzo or Galford (SS). FF6 Sabin - Without a doubt, this guy would play like Ryo or Takuma. I mean, c'mon, who else?! Or maybe Andy. Umaro - Everyone hates him, but he's perfect for the token Big Slow And Strong character with throwing moves. Terra - I can picture her as a Kula. Only Terra seems like more of a fire elemental character. She could have a Morph ability like Shermi/Chris/GodIHateThisGuy do when they go Orochi in KoF2k1... FF7 Cloud - ...Meh. It's so cliché it just has to be done. I feel so very dirty. Tifa - The token quick martial artists girl type character. She's just perfect. :D Barret - He completes the trio. Guns are gay in fighting games, so I'd see it just being used for projectile moves. FF8 Squall and co all die in the opening scenes because NOBODY LIKES THIS SORRY EXCUSE FOR A GAME. FF9 Zidane - Have this guy play like Chris with knives and I'm a happy camper. Amarant - Freeman (Garou), anyone? A teletubby - Because for all I care, this would be the LEAST FRUITY CHARACTER IN THIS GAME. :o Make it play like... I dunno. Iori? Iori rocked. So did Kyo. Damn do I enjoy playing either. :D FFX Just prerender a big cinematic fight scene and tell the player they won. Makes 'em happy. Also, show big numbers and make them invincible during the final battle. FFT Ramza - It'd be hard to play this guy right, since his unique abilities are all stat boosts. Well, Ultima isn't, nor are dash and throw stone. I suppose it could work. Orlandu - Swordtechs aplenty! This guy could be like an occidental Yoshitora (SSZ) what with the whole unlockable 7th move thing. ...Man, it's hard to find a decent character in this one. They all have swords. Repetitive. :/ Chocobo - Hey, why the hell not? :D FFMQ FF8's crew falls on the FFMQ characters after their rather welcomed death, crushing them to death as well. How's that? :D -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |
