I use my Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad for all my favorite 2D console emulators. Do most people use keyboards or what?

As I posted in your blitz issue thread, I use a Gravis Gamepad Pro USB that I found for $9.99 on sale. The directional pad is a bit touchy, but it's laid out just like an original PSX controller and works well for PSX, SNES, and NES games in my experience.

It depends on if I'm feeling lazy or not. Most of the time I use my PS2's Dual Shock 2 through a USB converter. If I'm feeling lazy and don't feel like going up to my room to get the controller, I just use a Logitech WingMan Extreme.

SNES, NES, Sega, I use the keyboard. It's just what I'm used to.
PSX and N64, I use a Logitech Dual Action controller. Works very well. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? Two Gravis Gamepads of the Pro, USB variety. In theory, for two player games. In practice, the second one is mostly a spare.
The D-pads aren't very robust, as R51 said, but they do the job unless you're trying to do hard Street Fighter combos. |

I use a keyboard. It takes me forever to configure the keys the way I want, though because it's different for different keyboards.

I use a keyboard because I refuse to spend either time or money on any other equipment. I intend emulation to be a cheap, convenient method of enjoying great games, and going out to get a controller would not only attract my parents' attention; I wouldn't want it myself. Although Super Metroid is nearly impossible on a keyboard...that's why I pretty much play only RPGs with menu-based battle systems (not even Secret of Mana).

As of now I use the keyboard for all emulation, but some day when I'm motivated, I'll buy a controller.

I use a keyboard. For my setup, I use WASD for up, left, down, and right, and this setup for the buttons:
SNES Insert\(numpad)7 - L Home\8 - X Page Up\9 - R Delete\4 - Y End\5 - B Page Down\6 - A Enter\+ - Start \\numpad Enter - Select GBA (numpad)8 - L 9 - Select 4 - B 5 - A 6 - R + - Start As I haven't used an SNES emulator in ages, I can imagine that Super Metroid might be a bit of a pain, but the GBA Metroids are pretty easy to cope with with my setup. But anyway, keyboards are the way to go for emulation. -------------------- "N'GHAAA! This is heavier than I thought! It'll take me 5 more minutes to drop it!" ~ Ultros |

Keyboard.
Nothin else too it really. Just a matter of configuring it to your liking, and since my Emulation "focus" (for better words) is the Genesis, i do the 6 button controller setup like so; A - A B - S C - D X - Q Y - W Z - E Start - Enter Mode - / Works wonders ![]() |

I really only play RPGs from SNES with emulation, so I just use a keyboard:
(all keys after the first 2 are on the number pad) Start: Enter Select: ' L: 4 R: 5 Y: 1 X: 2 B: 0 A: . -------------------- "I was using a metaphor. Keyboard is what I use. I have more than one gamepad, but I usually only use them for racing games (NFSU, Midnight Club 2, Track Mania, etc.) and the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series.

Eh, baby boomers will never take video games seriously. Anyway I'm quite surprized at the poll results. They just don't feel like console games without a console-ish controller. Controllers only cost 10-20 bucks and they're well worth the investment. That's like what, 2 or 3 hours worth of work? Come on guys.
