Quote I don't think that has anything to do with the completion time of a game or it's difficulty, though, which was my original complaint. Well, it sort of does have a lot to do with your original complaint - the one which Detah was replying to anyway. Quote I just finished the game with all characters maxed out at level 99 and having every spell in under 40 hours this time. Just a wandering thought. ![]() -------------------- "Luck is my middle name. I think we agree there. If you'll look way up the thread you'll see that I also found the general toughness of the game, especially bosses to be weak for a normal playthrough.
You are right about Ultima. It is one devastating spell even with low Magic Power. Ultima + Economizers make the game even less challenging. 9999 damage can be attained well before 100 Magic Power. I think that is because of its high Power level and it Ignores Defense. Some interesting things come with extreme stats tho. You can 255 hp Regen per tick. You can Poison 255 dam per tick. You can get L2 spells to do 9999. Or alternatively you can get L3 spells to do 9999 damage to multiple targets. That is always nice. Death-flagged attacks miss 99.9% of the time. With Locke's 134 Speed, his ATB bar will fill up faster than you can enter commands. And look out if you Haste him. Drain/Osmose/Rasp crazy amounts of HP/MP. At L67 Cyan's Dispatch can do 9999 to a single enemy with 0 DEF And the coup d'egras, 79,992 damage with GenjiGlove/Offering. This will handily spank Final Fight Kefka in 1 attack round. Sure, its overkill. But I enjoy killing him. |

Quote (graveyardstars @ 18th February 2004 16:48) Quote You're right, you only need Celes, Edgar and Setzer. Actually, whether you like it or not, Terra shows up at the end if you haven't gotten her in the WoR. remember, she has to lead the airship out. she'll join you right before the final fight. I didn't know this piece of info myself until a couple days ago, though. I think they could have standed to cut a few people out, but I don't know who, because I like them all. so, I voted for perfection. if it's not perfection then it's the closest thing to it, and I doubt they're gonna get that close again ![]() ![]() Yes, but Terra doesn't actually JOIN the fight. You're still stuck with only three characters. She just pops up at the end. |

IMHO, FFVI is much more difficult than newer games, such at FF7 and FF8 (assuming you don't try to beat the weapons and such), and it runs rings around FFT difficulty wise because you really never get a break from the action when a battle begins. You will all probably think I'm insane for saying so, due to the already monumental length of the game as it is, but I found myself wishing it were longer. Yes, it's true...even after putting in nearly 100 hours the first time I played through, I found myself wishing to spend more time with the characters of FFVI, and was reluctant to let them go because of something silly like the end of the game. This, in my book, is the sign of a truly great RPG (which FFVI is)...that there's no such thing as enough of it. In contrast, FF8 and FFT seemed too short as well, not so much because they were so overwhelming awesome I couldn't let go, but because the games just seemed to end really abruptly, and I felt I didn't get a chance to use all the skills I'd built up by the time the games ended. I also thought character development in FFVI outshone all those that have come since, though I was impressed with FF7 on some level and at least with Cloud's story.
Kefka may not be a big ugly monster, but he's one of my favorite villains. Why? Well, because he's not larger than life for the most part...I can relate to a super annoying human enemy better than an evil being that lives on the moon, or a sorceress who can control time and space. Yes, he does sprout wings and kick butt in the end, but he always posesses the same human traits of pettiness and being just plain despicable straight up to the very end, and I love to hate him all the way through. It's hard to give a monster final boss a lot of character development, and Ultimecia had none (Sephiroth had a lot, so he's an exception), but in the case of a human foe like Kefka, the sky's the limit! ![]() -------------------- You know me, you just wish you didn't... I love the game with a passion, but there are a few things which bug me about it (note that some of the things could be attributed to Ted Woolsey's translation):
Character development - For example, Edgar is supposed to be a lecherous king, yet he only has just a few lines to indicate this about him. The glitches - There are so many glitches in the game! Sketch, Psycho Cyan. Evade%, etc. If they remake the game, they'd better fix these. Some sprites - The sprites are very well done, but a few of them have strange little errors... For example, when the soldier sprite is cheering, he only has one arm up like Cyan, and his other hand is at his side. It's a bare hand, rather than being gloved, and it is only half there! Difficulty - The game is too easy. Now, I enjoy being able to reach insane levels of power and destroy everything in my path, but it's too easy to do so in this game, since enemies can't evade your attacks, and you level up to quickly (especially with the egg). That's about it for now... I'll edit up this post if anything else comes to mind. -------------------- --sbq92 <>< |

FF6 characters are the most powerful and are given the most amount of abilities among all other FFs out there to my knowledge. I think Square was banking off of the idea that players wanted super strong characters that tear everything apart with ease. It's very easy to gain insane amounts of power in FF6 unlike other FFs. Now I haven't played any other FF more than twice, but even with a great knowledge of other FFs I don't think they could possibly be as easy as FF6. In those other FFs can you really kill bosses in two hits with no training? I doubt it.

I think the diffuculty is a bit easy same with bosses getting killed with 3-hits, though the final bosses were a bit hard my levels when I beat FFVI were: Edgar Lv. 62, Terra Lv. 61, Mog Lv. 55, and Gogo Lv. 54. With this party I practically whaped all of them (the final bosses!)

I'd say in my opinion that FFVI doesn't so much suffer from too many characters...I have no problem ignoring a surplus of so-so disposable characters in an RPG. The problem for me is that it has too many COOL characters, and I find myself wanting to use them all. How do I choose between Blitz, Sword Technique, Tools, Rage, etc? Moreover, I feel the need to master as many aspects of all of the skills of each character each time I play, making for a pretty long ride most of the time (which doesn't bother me in itself). I wouldn't give up any of the characters in the game (well...maybe Realm and Strago), and no matter how hard I try, I can't ever let myself neglect any of my favorites when I play the game through.
I actually find the boss challenge just about right for me, given that I don't spend much time wandering around leveling up. Usually, they're just tough enough to make me sweat a little, but my fighting strategy is "tight" enough that I don't worry too much about losing to most of them. Some enemies I think it was a close toss up as to whether they should have been bosses or not, and they could have passed as regular enemies instead (like that boss pirahna at Barren Falls), but just got the boss treatment to signify a waypoint in the game. I like the boss battle music better than the regular battle theme, so I'm not complaining too much. And it will be a long time before I shun Atma or Atma Weapon as being too easy, unless I spend WAY too much time leveling up the next time I play the game through! ![]() -------------------- You know me, you just wish you didn't... I voted perfect because I think it's close enough to. I don't think there are any flaws. I just want more gaming as good as FF6. I like the spell-learning. I like the variety of characters and I even like that some of them don't develop much. Old graphics rule. Kefka's great. There's a ton of cool stuff to do, and I was never not having fun.
As for difficulty, I spent 60 something hours, got my characters to level 50 something, did all of the extra stuff, and didn't have a hard time with Kefka. However, within the final area, there were still some random enemies wandering around that gave me a lot of trouble (I think around where you fight the yellow dragon perhaps) so I ran away from them. Even if those hard bad guys weren't there I'd still be satisfied with the difficulty. I had to do some levelling up and there were battles that made use my head and act quickly. Things can always improve whether or not they're flawed. I think this game is too well done to call it flawed. -------------------- Get me off this Disciplinary Committee so I can play any FF except for FF8!!! |

I've thought long and hard about it and I came up with.....
- Not being able to resurrect Leo! - I have never, ever, come across a game which has so few flaws. It is also astonishing to think that this game is 10 years old this year - and we are still finding topics to talk about! I think the only other game that comes close to such flawlessness (is that a word?) is Super Mario Kart! I disagree. I'm happier being sad about Leo (logic?). I think the major flaw of FF4 is that so many characters get resurrected. Leo's death makes the game even more poignant for me, and being able to visit his grave before finally heading to the last area puts some icing on the cake.

You have a point....I also found that if you let Cid die, the quest then has more of an edge and meaning for Celes.
The discovery of Locke's headband gives her hope. And besides, Cid does sod all for the rest of the game anyway! Go on uncle, just one more plate of 'Rotten Fish'......... The biggest problem was most definetly either too many charcters or the lack of difficulty. I took me time to beat IV, V, and Tactics, but it took me about 48 hours to beat it.
I didn't like their being to many characters because I got confused who was who and had problems managing my parties and keeping them ALL strong. There were too many characters and weak stories involved for there to be a really memerable story with all of the characters. Practicly no one of them had history except for Locke, Edger, and Sabin. -------------------- - The problem isn't relgion, the problem is religious tolerance - |

This game is about the closest to perfection as any game can really come. However, I couldn't quite rate it as perfect for a number of reasons.
1- Way too easy to be cheap with bosses ended up with 4 Ultimas (or was it 3?) at a time with the proper relics, each for 9999 without maxing out lvls/stats 2- Every character is able to gain every spell, so if you intend on using just magic, easy enough, the characters become just different numbers for MPower and MP 3- At least one character *cough*cough*GAU*cough*cough* annoyed me throughout the game, his personality just seemed truly to have the sole purpose of annoying me In the end though I figure that I voted incorrectly due to a poorly placed mouse click and a failure to check myself. If I could vote again, my complaints would be put in the order listed here. This post has been edited by Shivy on 8th March 2004 08:17 -------------------- "I was using a metaphor. Character interaction-that wins HANDS DOWN!!! There hardly is any developement or interaction between anyone!!There are a lot of avenues that had been ditched:-
-Gogo(The WORST of them all!) -Cid-I put in effort to let the nut live. Dirk Diggler, I should've followed in your footsteps and killed Celes' dear uncle with rotten fish!!! -The friendly sorta emnity between Relm and Sabin, or Celes and Cyan -The very fact that characters just don't link! Think, say, Shadow and Mog, or Strago and Sabin. Not a WORD was spoken between these 2, and this list is by NO MEANS EXHAUSTIVE! I could go on for ages... EDIT:But lest you think that I hate FF6, Well I don't at all!! I just wish that there was more developement in the literary field; the game didn't strike as loud a chord in my mind like how the other FFs did. The desired character interaction probably took place on board the airship will you were busy watching what your active party was doing...or in the tents when you camped out for the night and you thought they were all asleep...
![]() That's funny about the fish thing...I didn't know it was possible to get him to recover...I've always killed him off with my laziness. Those fast moving fish are just too darn hard to catch! ![]() Back to topic now...sorry... -------------------- You know me, you just wish you didn't... "Uwee hee hee! Hahahax...Now tt'as a good point, Majik Monkee!! However, the DARN game makers don't even bother to let you in on the scoop!! How irritating...
![]() Anyway, I play FF6 with an emulator. That means I can save and load very liberally. For me the problem ain't how 2 catch the fast fish, but rather whether or not thy appeared!! When they did I simply waited 4 them 2 swim 2 the shore, then get Celes 2 catch them. And when they didn't, I reloaded. Kept doing this till Cid got better, which he eventually did, but not after a substantial amount of saves and loads!! ![]() Hohoho...you've probably noticed I digress with u, Majik Monkee, so back 2 topic... -------------------- Student of CCS, Grandmaster of Alternative Literature and Musical Passionista at your service!!! |

The difficulty. Even without tjeesing and munchkinizing your characters out, or using lame exploits like the vanish/instadeath combo the game was too easy. I remember how much trouble I had with FF4... the EASY version, but I beat Kefka on my second try (hey... I was young when I first played it).
Everything else about the game completely rocks (although I agree with a previous poster that said the cast could have been trimmed down a tad). And Kefka could totally own Mr.I_Have_A_Long_Sword_to_Compensate with his eyes closed. I mean... what does Sepphiroth have going for him other than the big sword and the stupid hair? Nothing. Kefka has... *gumption*. -------------------- "Nothing can beat the music of hundreds of voices screaming in unison!" - Kefka |
