Like all of you, I am an avid FFT fan yet there is a problem: I have exhausted all of the secrets in the game. I have played as every possible combination of classes and have acquired every item and now I need a new adventure . . . desperately.
Does anyone know of any game - a tactical rpg - that is similar to FFT? Some have said that Hoshigami is the sequel to FFT. I strongly dissagree with that. Hoshigami pales in comparison to FFT. I could go into the reasons if necessary but, for the mean time, does anyone know of a good FFT-like game? Please respond . . . I'm desperate. |

How about Ogre Battle 64. Its an old game for the Nintendo 64 that has the class changing system. It has a buch of secrets and side quests. Also a good plot and many characters. This game is probably your best pick if you have not already played it.

Thank you, Vicks. I have not played Ogre Battle for Nintendo 64. Unfortunately, I don't own that system but I have a cousin who does. I'll try to to borrow his system and try out the game.
Does anyone else know of another game like FFT? A game that does justice to the Tactical RPG genre? |

Well, you can always get Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. But thats for the Game Boy Advance.
If you have a PS2 go for Disgaea. There is a thread on here somewhere about it. They are arguing whether Disgaea is better than FFT. I personally haven't played the game. But I'm going to buy it once I get enough money and some free time. It is pretty similar to FFT. It even has similar graphics even though it is a PS2 game. Do a search on the web about it you'll find something probably. I might have spelled it wrong though I don't think I did. Off hand I can't think of any other good tactics game. But I'm pretty sure Disgaea will satisfy you. -------------------- -- You're Gonna Carry That Weight -- |

I myself had a lot of fun playing "Tactics Ogre : Knight of Lodis" on GBA, so I would strongly recommend it.

If you want a good strategy game that is like FFt than why not play the game that FFT was based on. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together for PSX and Super Nintendo. It is a part of the Ogre Battle series and the prequal to Tactics Ogre: The Knight Of Lodis. It has a good story with multiple endings and important decisions to make. In stead of using only 5 or 4 characters in battle you can use 10 and even have training sessions with your army and switch to 2 player mode. But the graphics are poor and the story doesn't compare to FFt complex mix of genres. Another game you might want to check out if Final Fantasy 12(That is when it comes out.) It actually occurs in the world of Ivalice and is setted before the forming of Ivalice in the Golden Age with multiple races vast technology and much war. That's all I know about it now though.

Whats wrong with Tactics Advance. I'm not going to shell out $70 to get a GBA but I don't see anything wrong with the game itself. *kicks* Red Mages Kick in the shin. Thank you Blackhyral and Red Mages kick. I will look into Tactics Ogre: the Knight of Lodis. What an unusual subtitle for that other game. "Let us cling together for PSX and Super Nintendo." I'll try to find it though. Thanks.

If i were you i would try the vandal hearts series. vandal hearts job system isnt as good as FFT each character has 2 promotions most split into two branches for first promotion. VH2 has no definate job system but rather 4 classes of armor (light, heavy, robes, winged) and 8 classes of weapons (sword, ax, spear, throw, bow, staff, knife, special) and a shield class which anyone can equip, so basicly there are 32 differnt clases. All special attacks/magic are equiped on the weapons that can be moved to other weapons after it is learned.I also think you will like the story cause it is close to FFT. to sum it up, a war between two countrys and a church that holds an evil secret

I was going to agree with the Tactics Ogre games, obviously, they have "tactics" in the name....
as well as Vandal Hearts, one of the hardest rpgs I've ever played. try Eternal Eyes, also, not as good, but worth playing through once. -------------------- look into my eyes tell me what you see someone real? this is real! what you wish to be! ...O P E N Y O U R E Y E S........ ...open your eyes, open your eyes.... |

Hey, after you finish Tactics Ogre, play Hoshigami(sp.). It's almost exactly like Tactic Ogre, but a different title (makes sense).
Front Mission 3 (PS1) is another great tactics game, though mecha rather than swords and sorcery. It's predecessor, Front Mission (Super Famicom), is ROMed and translated, and good. Tactics Advance is goes alongside FFTA when shopping. If you don't mind top-down view 2D tactic games for older systems (emulation, eBay, etc.), try these: Military Madness (Turbografx 16) - there is a PS1 remake of it also Master of Monsters (Genesis) - also remade for PS1 with much improved graphics/gameplay SD Gundam Super Gachopan World (SF) - hardly anything needing to be read, just figure out buttons and read numbers Any of the Fire Emblem titles, though no translations is a problem. Advance Wars 1 & 2 available in stores Shining Force 1 & 2 |

Personally, I've occasionally run across a few ideas in my mind about making up a characters-based-in-reailty Pokemon+FFTA-like game, where various characters control teams of tactical units and you go around battling them between people over pure challenge, tournaments with prizes, personal conflicts, and to 'defeat evil'. Of course, that's been done before so darn many times before...and I still have yet to finish the RPG I'm already working on.

I LOVED the Dynasty Tactics game for PS2. It was a great strategic game with lots of neat realistic and non realistic battle options.

Some people have recommended Vandal Hearts. I would have to disagree with that. Although the class system is fun and all... you can't fight random battles. It's basically fight battle after battle after battle... 10 hours of gameplay I got out of that before I beat it. I never played the second one but hopefully they changed it from the first.
Arc the Lad: Twilight of Spirits was an alright game (PS2). Awesome storyline in my opinion, gameplay was alright. If you're someone who enjoys a good storyline I highly recommend this game. -------------------- This is my world: (Got my second chapter up, 3rd Chapter about 80% complete) http://www3.sympatico.ca/daniel876/homepage.html |

Here's the breakdown IMO:
FFT>Fire Emblem>Tactics Ogre>FFTA I highly, HIGHLY recommend Fire Emblem. It is a whole new world of strategy (meaning its different). It is more like full-scale war rather than skrimsihes. I prefer FFT, but FE is a close second. -------------------- "Dance, water, dance!" -Demyx, Kingdom Hearts II "I met my love before I was born..." -AFI, 'Love Like Winter' from 'Decemberunderground' Currently Playing: Guitar Hero, Shadow of the Colossus |

I second Tactics Ogre, mainly Knight of Lodis. It's so FFT-ish, you'd think you're playing a direct sequel. Were it not for the un-Final Fantasy-ish universe. Otherwise it's exactly the same: same sprite/tile art style, same combat behavior, same world map movement; there are very few differences.
The Front Mission series are pretty good too. The first one was my favorite, personally. Think of it like a futuristic FFT with mechs; it's a little different, but very good. Personally, I loved the first one's story and REALLY got into it (can you picture a 20, well, 19 at the time, year old guy cheering wildly after beating the last boss around 4-5 am on a weekend?) FFTA might be a letdown. Then again it might not. Either way, it's very different from FFT. For one thing, the job system is considerably different (you equip and fight with items to gain skills instead of spending JP to unlock a skill tree) and the storyline much less serious (personally I thought the story was incredibly stupid). The game unfolds through jobs you pick in bars as opposed to events. The world map is... very different, and more like a board where you put new areas as you unlock them instead of exploring a world and arriving at new areas yourself. The overall flow of the game doesn't feel very FFT-ish, though it DEFINITELY is a tactical RPG; the changes are something you might find yourself disappointed by, though. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

A lot of what's already been said is solid info, but I have to give another shout-out to Disgaea. That game is awesome for alot of the same reasons as FF Tactics (fun job system, entertaining combat, great story) and for alot of very different reasons (awesome and hilarious dialogue, not taking itself seriously in the best way possible, taking overleveling to a new ridiculous extreme and making it seem normal). I borrowed it from a friend because the price has refused to drop despite being out for nearly two years, and it will suck up your time like nothing else... except perhaps the original FF Tactics....
