Alot of talk has been going around since i90east's HV has been released. Alot of people have been talking about how good Gau is, but I have never bothered to to use him.
So, I'm playing through again, and I am at the Veldt now, and I had a question. Which rages make Gau such a good charecter? Which Rages are a MUST HAVE? Both WoB and WoR. I want to see what's so good about Gau this time through. I just usually get Gau, and leave him sitting in the airship the rest of the game. -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

Most people like Stray Cat the best (including me) which uses CatScratch, a very good attack indeed. I also found, I think it was Templar 's Elf Fire to be useful for a while, too.

![]() I'd just make a record of random encounter enemies which are a decent challenge in the game you've passed, (especially if they have effective moves or neat-o ones). That's what I did my first time through in the WOB, although that was a CES and Sabin game, so I didn't put him to his full potential. ![]() -------------------- "Luck is my middle name. When you first get Gau get Stray Cat (Catscratch), OverMind (Elf Fire), and Templar (Fire 2, Safe). Brawler (Stone) is also pretty good. Right after the Narshe battle go back to the Veldt for the Aspik (Giga Volt) rage. This will roast Ultros in the Opera House and every monster in the Magitek facility beyond belief.
If you're having a difficult time on the floating continent, go back down to the Veldt and grab the Behemoth (Meteor) rage. This should be all you need for the WoB unless you need an ice attack, which you can get from the Slamdancer (Ice 2) rage. At this point Gau can just learn Ice 2 from espers though. Also consider the Rhinox (Life 3) rage which you can get after the Magitek facility. In the WoR you'll definately want Tyranosaur (Meteo), Retainer (Leo's Shock), Io (Flare Star), Vectaur (Pearl Wind) and Spek Tor (Blaster). Lesser but still good WoR rages include Prussian (Land Slide), Chaser (Plasma), Tom Thumb (Step Mine), Harpiai (Aero), Rhyos (Surge), Enuo (CleanSweep), Toe Cutter (Shrapnel) Didalos (Merton) and PowerDemon (Flare). -------------------- FFXI (Siren server) Tauu the Windurstian Tarutaru! I always use bomb for blaze until I get aspik, and then afterwards when I need fire until I get Io. Blaze may not be quite as powerful as Elf Fire, but it attacks everyone (sometimes) and does a good deal of damage.

Dahling and (I think--can somebody check this for me?) Nohrabbit rages make Gau cast a free Cure2 about every other round. They can be useful for lots of non-boss battles.

I have revised my answer with a very high level of detail, and you can find it here:
FFVI FAQ Thread I'll add Nightshade to the Q&A (see Zed's post below). Thanks for the information. This post has been edited by i90east on 14th February 2004 22:51 -------------------- FFXI (Siren server) Tauu the Windurstian Tarutaru! White Mage & Paladin |

Because no one else is going to suggest it...
NightShade (Charm) Charm is like Muddled status, except you can never be immune to it and the only way to heal it is to either a) kill the caster or b) kill the affected. It has a low hit rate, but since monsters typically don't even have M.Block that's not much of a concern. This spell can work on anyone who isn't carrying 128 M.Block or is vulnerable to Clear status (off the top of my head, only Cactrot is invulnerable). The rage itself has the same status immunities as Magic Urn and can absorb Water. The only weakness is a weakness to Fire, but it's not like Flame Shlds are hard to get. You can meet NightShade by talking to the flower painting in Owzer's house when you go to retrieve Relm in the WOR. Quote (Griever_128 @ 18th February 2004 19:10) Can you get Rages of Ultros and Ziegfried? They're bosses. Bosses don't appear on the Veldt except for a few exceptions. I'm not sure if they exist. They definitely don't appear on the Veldt, but whether data for such rages exists is another question. Chupon, Allo Ver, Pugs, and another enemy (I can't remember it) actually have rages, but never appear on the Veldt, for example. That's why it's actually possible to get their rages if you hack into the game. Now if somebody could tell us something about whether rages for Ziegfried and Ultros exist...

It's actually Siegfried, not Ziegfried. The fake one you fight on the Phantom Train doesn't have a rage, but the real one in the colosseum does (which is Flare, nothing too exciting). Ultros has no rages.

If we can't have the Allo Ver rage, it's just because the battle in Cave of the Veldt isn't the good enemy formation. The Allo ver that we fight is in the formation 515, but the one that can appear on the Veldt is the formation 126. Anyway, the rage is just Quake, which spell that I don't use often.
For the Pugs, I already fight them on the Veldt BUT even if Gau dives in them, I don't have the Rage. This makes me mad ![]() ![]() -------------------- «À l'aventure compagnons, je suis parti vers l'horizon! J'aurais mieux fait de rester au lit, ce donjon, il est pourri!» - Pen of Chaos |

On top of the mountains at Narshe when you fight Kefka, well that enemy you encounter right in front of Kekfa - Brawler kills that with just one stone. Life is easy with Rage qiute often.

The White Dragon rage is about the only one I ever use in the small amount of time that I use Gau. Simply said not enough things do pearl elemental damage, which is effective against many enemies.

That's not always a reliable principle. For example, Intangir gives Pep Up, a lore, but a rather useless one.

My favourite rage was probably Rhinox - great early source of Life3, which was quite handy in a lot of places. Gigantos being a prime example, if he decides to go ape-shit on your party and take out two or three guys.

Is there a code to give Gau all legal rages that you can obtain normally through playing the game?
