Well I just started getting into books a few years back and have only read a few good ones. Sun Tzu's The Art of War was a nice book, The Art of Zen, and Cloud of Sparrows. I've read some King novels but a lot of his "newest" ones pretty much suck. Well right now I'm trying to find the sequel to Cloud of Sparrows but does anyone else here at CoN like to read? If so what would you recomend.

I used to read books from the Dragonlance series a lot. The normal dungeons and dragons type stuff, they're fun to read.
I've also come across more than a few books from my English classes that I liked. The Outsiders, The Pigman, Of Mice and Men, Harrison Bergeron, The Monkey's Paw, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, The Great Gatsby, and A Separate Peace (I think that's the title...by the way, there's a game called Blitzball in that book ![]() This post has been edited by The_Pink_Nu1 on 12th February 2004 01:53 -------------------- SPEKKIO: "GRRR...That was most embarrassing!" |

I'd say that this other topic is pretty much the same as the one I'm posting in right here, so don't be surprised if the two are merged.
As for my favorite books, I'd have to say Science fiction (Star Trek and Star Wars), Fantasy (LOTR and the Hobbit), and comic books (Bloom County, Calvin and Hobbes). -------------------- Wow. 1,000 posts. I miss you all now that I'm in boarding school! ;_; |

I enjoy the Shannara books and Forgotten Realms books.
I never could really get into the Dragonlance series. -------------------- "The Hero I am not. I can do naught." Respect Frog... |

It would be impossible for me to decide upon one or two 'favourite' books or writers. But I can name a few recent reads that stick out in my mind.
Earlier today, I finished Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee, the most recent winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. It is a brilliant book. Coetzee has condensed all of life's contradiction into 200 wonderful, irony-laden pages. I will read more of his works in the near future. I'm also reading Wayne Johnston's The Colony of Unrequited Dreams, another great book filled with irony and a fantastic dry wit that won't allow you to stop reading. Historical fiction isn't one of my favourite things (the book is a fictional account of the life of Joe Smallwood, an important figure in the history of Newfoundland, Canada), but this one is amazig. I would say that the best book I have read recently is Life of Pi by Yann Martel. The novel is perfect. Martel's narrative voice is endearing; he possesses a wit that is both sharp and 'cute.' That, combined with a thoughtful plot and an absolutely amazing ending, make Life of Pi the sort of book I could read again and again. I recommend it to everybody. Even a person who does not usually read literary fiction could (would) enjoy Life of Pi. -------------------- Always hopeful, yet discontent; he knows changes aren't permanent -- But change is! |

Has anyone here read any books from George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice And Fire"? They are in, IMHO, the best fantasy books since LOTR. Just thought I'd ask.

My favourite, of course, is Terry Pratchett's Discworld Novels. They reel you in and keep you giggling for ages.
My second favourite books are the DUNCTON Chronicles. They're not as widely known, but they're classics. I really reccomend you search around on the web for a bigger review and see if you like them. It's set in the beautiful countryside of Shropshire in England, and it's about a community of moles in a world of turmoil, love, passion, honour and belief. Every book has a kinda moral to it, and a religious undertone. In one of the books, it's kind of like the life of Jesus but in moledom. Anyway, I couldn't put them down. Written by William Horwood. And I read the Lord of the Ring books when I was 10...many many years back. ![]() Favourite genre is Fantasy, naturally. At the moment I'm writing my own fantasy fictions which I hope will be published in a year or two.
