Is it just me or does anyone else think that Golbez and Exdeath are somewhat similar? I think they look similar and have similar plot functions, and you do beat the crap out of both of them halfway through each game, and

My first reaction to Exdeath was "Oh look, a crappy rehash of Golbez". They look alike, talk alike and have similair appearences in battle and such. However, they are not similair plot wise. For one, Exdeath is the main villain in FF5
Possible spoilers: highlight to view But Golbez isnt the main villain in FF4, he's just Zemus' pawn and he redeems himself at the end so plotwise, no they aren't really the same. -------------------- Blood & Fire |

Exdeath's appearance in the beginning was alot like that of Golbeze, but not much else. I mostly thought he was more of a Zemus/Zeromus rip-off.

They do look similar but lets not forget that these two games were on the SNES platform so there is not much they can do about that. As far as plot, X-Death was much better then Golbez. I think X-Death was much more of a badass then Golbez and he was alot cooler, but not as cool as Gilgamesh though.

No they werent the same at all. I think golbez was a tool where as exdeath might be the tool man if you get the drift.

GMH,
Possible spoilers: highlight to view On an unrelated note, galuf did NOT try to kill X-Death, he tried to protect cara, if X-Death ran away or something, galuf wouldn't chase him in order to destroy him, his only goal was to protect, unlike tellah who was motivated by the desire to kill -------------------- "FLAELI!!!" --- Rune Walsh |

True Del, but I think GM Harvey found a nice parallel between the two. However, Ex-Death's goal is too much different than that of Golbez and too unique altoghether, so I have to say that outside appearance the two characters aren't similar enough.

Okay somebody brought up trying/not trying to kill the evil dude. I don't have have a save-state near Tellah's battle with Golbez, but I do have one near Galuf's battle with Exdeath. Here is the script, for reference:
Possible spoilers: highlight to view [Cara enters, and hits Exdeath. The crystal forcefields stop. Cara runs over to Galuf.] Galuf: What did you do to Exdeath...!? Cara: He shouldn't be able to move for a while...Huh!? [Exdeath revives.] Exdeath: Damn you... [Exdeath traps Cara in a fire ring.] Cara: Stop it!!! Exdeath: Die!!! [Exdeath throws Cara around by the power of the crystals/his magic (?).] Cara: G...rand..pa! [Galuf gets up.] Galuf: Ca...ra...! [Exdeath restarts the crystal forcefields. Nevertheless, Galuf resists their power.] Exdeath: Isn't this nice, Galuf? Resist my power and the crystals shatter!! [Cara falls over.] Galuf: Cara!! [Galuf takes one more step, and the crystal aimed at him shatters. He throws Cara out of the fire ring, and then diffuses it. For some reason he has a purple aura around him.] Galuf: Exdeath!! [Galuf runs up to Exdeath, and the battle starts.] [Exdeath throws 3rd-order black magic at Galuf, as well as the occasional Qrter and the physical attack. Galuf still fights, despite his being at 0 HP, and after Galuf has been hitting Exdeath for a while, Exdeath finally responds.] Exdeath: Take this!! [uses Vacuum Wave] Exdeath: You've made me mad! To the world of Death with you!! [casts Flare, Holy, and Meteo in a row--XX-Magic, anyone?] Exdeath: [surprised that Galuf is still fighting] Wh-, why don't you die! Galuf: Not yet...I can't die yet! Even if my life burns out...I will defeat you!! Exdeath: I cannot be defeated by anger or hatred... Galuf: This isn't anger......nor is it hatred...!! Exdeath: Then what is it...? [battle ends] -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse!
