This thread is inspired by a situation that I'm in. You see, I've been working at the public library down the street for nearly 6 years. The library is allowing me to select a book for them to buy in my honor, something the library does for everyone who works there 5 years. This isn't a book for me to keep, but rather a book that will be put on the shelf with a big sticker on the inside cover saying something like "This book is dedicated to *first name* *last name* in honor of his/her 5 years of service to library patrons everywhere."
I'm not asking for suggestions, but rather it would be fun to see what you guys and gals would pick. Now during my time at the library, I have seen a whole lot of materials making the assumption that evolution is true, from adult biology books to children's videos and books about dinosaurs. However there are no science books explaining intelligent design. Doesn't it help to have an open mind? Certainly. I will be selecting a book on the modern theory of ID. I have read 3 books of this nature and after using this material in debates, I definately approve of their contents. Here's what I have in mind: No Free Lunch - Hard Cover 365 pages -------------------- FFXI (Siren server) Tauu the Windurstian Tarutaru! White Mage & Paladin |

As we discussed in chat, I would want to do a book about Sol Lewitt and his art. Here's one I found at Amazon that looked good: Sol Lewitt.

A copy of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook.
![]() Except of course the fact that its techincally Illegal to put that in a library unless the words DO NOT PHOTOCOPY! are on the front page. But since thats a no no, probably a copy of a Terry Pratchett book. I'd recommend any of Bevin Alexander's military strategy books.

Geez, I wonder what most libraries don't have.
A book of the artwork of Hieronymous Bosch, or maybe Clive Barker's Books of Blood. Then again, maybe most libraries have those... I don't know. -------------------- Get me off this Disciplinary Committee so I can play any FF except for FF8!!! |

I would have to go with Del on this one. I would probably take The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett, with hopes that reading this one book would spark their curiosity to read the others in this extremely funny series.

I'd go with a copy of Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoevsky. This is my favorit novel, as I've stated often in other topics. Reading this book makes a profound impact on one's philosophy and outlook on life.
P.S. There is another model of the origen of life which you may be interested in being acquanted with, as it solves many of the problems inherent in evolution (though wether or no it has any bases in history is still to be seen). And just as a side note, God's "Intellegent Design" could have been evolution, the two are not opposed, as most assume they are. (If you'd like to respond, please do so via PM, or in another topic.) |

I might suggest anything by Chuck Palahniuk, but specifically Lullaby or Fight Club which was a book before it was ever a movie. I've never encountered a library that has anything Chuck has written, and this stuff is rather creative in both the story concepts and writing styles.

I too would endorse the book "Tuesdays With Morrie" by Mitch Albom. Excellent book, one of the best I've ever read.

"The Hobbit" by J. R. R. Tolkein. Very awesome book.
Another good book, or so I hear, is "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" or some title like that. I don't quite remember. -------------------- Wow. 1,000 posts. I miss you all now that I'm in boarding school! ;_; |

I love The Phantom Tollbooth. What a fantastic book. I can read it even now when I should be reading more intellectually stimulating books.

I would go for "In the Eye of the Dragon" by Stephen King (may have messed up the title a bit).
I don't own it, surprisingly, but I love that book. I've read it about 7 times, always borrowing it from the library, and there's something about it that just pulls me in each time. -------------------- I had an old signature. Now I've changed it. |

Oh yeah, another good one is "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl. Maybe a children's book, but a classic nonetheless.
