I've been spending the last week trying to get the stone gun from dark behemoths and the dragon whisker from red dragons but all i've been rewarded with so far is Salty Rage (not bad but not what im looking for) and Wizard Rods.

I believe it's random, but just keep trying. Sooner or later you're going to obtain your ultimate goal...what I like to call..."The Stoner".

i am not sure but im just guessing but it might be the answer. you see brave effects move find item so if you have high brave you will get the items thats rare or the one you get less amount of time. so i poached with ramza 97 brave i poached a wilbow trying to get my collection of ribons and i got an fs bag or something i went back and poached with my dancer brave 45 or something and i got the ribbon (common ) everytime. so just try to poach with someone with extremely high brave if it doesnt work i might just be lucky.

Sorry about that, but what you get from poaching a monster is random. I've tried several ways to improve my chances, including the Brave stuff. Sadly, the only conclusion I got to was that it's random, with a higher probability for the lesser item.
My advice would be breeding , possibly more than one monster of the type you want to poach, enter a battle with one character equiped with Secret Hunt, one Wizard with Math Skill and Chameleon Robe, and 3 monsters. Poach them and then blast the ennemy away with a good Holy. It works wonder. By the way, about poaching stuff, breeding is the only way of obtaining a Wildbow, wich RacistAgainstChocobos mentions in his post. Just thought you ought to know, if you didn't already..
