OK, what's your favorite black elemental (or maybe just mental) spell? The people want to know! Or, rather, I want to know... kinda. Anyways, vote and post. That's all there is to it.

I like Pearl the best. I mean, how many oysters had to dye* so they could cast this spell just once?

Oh yeah, in case you hadn't noticed, the spells that use these elements are in parenthasees (source)

*Bad pun, and I'm not sorry at all

Edit
OK, I realized that water is only in Blue magic spells, and that W.Wind isn't a Wind spell. Thanks, Master ZED and Shirrow for pointing these out for me.

Hmm, for me it was a toss-up between fire and lightning. Fire 2 looks fantastic but Fire 3 looks lame. However Bolt 2 looks good and Bolt 3/Giga Volt looks awesome. So lightning is my choice!

I've always been partial to wind element. Fire/ice/lightning always seemed to basic, quake didn't work on anything that floats, and besides, merton is (in my humble opinion) the coolest magic spell used by a playable character. Not too sure about w.wind though...

I liked Lightning most, basically because I didn't like fire and ice. Ice hurts fire monsters... or was it fire hurts ice monsters? I can't remember, just lit3 them.

Wind, however, looks the best, I think.

Just a couple quick notes.

* Ice 1, 2, 3 are not Water elemental attacks. Ice and Water are different elements. There are 8 elements in FF6. Ice 1/2/3 are ice elemental attacks. AquaRake is both Wind and Water. Trident is a pure Water elemental attack.

* W Wind is not a Wind/Air elemental attack. It takes a flat 91% of a targets current HP in damage to anyone, even someone who is immune to Wind attacks (Paladin Shield wearer). Stamina can block the attack.

* Demi and Quartr are not Earth elemental attacks in FF6. Not that you said it was, just wanted to point that out. I prefer that these HP cutting attacks are not elemental in nature. Still wanna block that nasty Raid attack? Get a high stamina. I think Stamina of 128 will block all the stamina blockable spells.

To add on what Detah said: those fractional attacks don't have an element. They were given one later in VIII (maybe VII, also. I don't know for sure) under the name of gravity.

Anyways, my favorite element is Holy. It just seems appropriate when you are supposed to be the "good guys."

Well, my source for determining the various elements was this very site, and it only had these seven element icons for all the black magic spells. I wonder what criteria CoN used for dtermining their elements...

Isn't aurabolt another source of holy/pearl damage? I know it has some element because it can heal certain monsters.

Where is Darkness and Gravity? And why is Water and Ice in the same spot?

Anyway, I voted for Lightning, because that element, with Ice and Pearl/Holy, are my favourites, and after thinking, I decided that electricity was the coolest one. Kazapp!

But, I don't think we should choose elements from how well they work. I mean, some people have chosen an element just because a certain spell works better than another. Just my opinion, though.

Darkness is a status ailment in FF6, not an element.
Gravity is not an element in FF6 either. Earth is roughly the equivalent. Strange, but thats how they have it set up in FF7.

Check the source if you distrust my criteria, for goodness sakes.

Um... have you ever taken science class? I know that some may consider Ice to be cold and hard and water is gushing and generally not very cold or hot, when it all boils* down to it, they're both H2O. And besides, my source of info (CoN, if you haven't been listening) doesn't have a category for Water, so I paired it in with Ice to please people who like Water, and might be disappionted if it wasn't there. And to be totally honest, there wasn't even a real Water-element black magic spell in FFVI blink.gif Shocking, I know.

Not many people did.

And I don't mean to be nit-picky, but I still would like to know where CoN got the info on what spells are what element(s).

Perhaps it would help if I just listed all elemental Black Magics?

Fire:
Fire 1/2/3

Fire and Wind:
Merton

Ice:
Ice 1/2/3

Bolt:
Bolt 1/2/3

Poison:
Poison, Bio

Pearl:
Pearl

Earth:
Quake

And Water doesn't exist in the Black Magic list. Since this is a Black Magic poll, Water shouldn't be listed, and Wind should be in the same option as Fire since it only appears in Merton.

Detah: Raid isn't one of the 13 spells affected by Stamina. In fact, no drain-type spell is affected by Stamina.

If you really think I'm wrong, try Vanish/W Wind (or just W Wind) on an Evil Oscar, then Merton. If W Wind is Wind-elemental, it will absorb both spells and not just Merton, as it absorbs Wind.

Yes, I know Ice and Water are both H2O. mad.gif

And while you're right about the extreme lack of water-elemental black spells in FFVI, Ice and Water ARE different elements in the game and are treated in different ways. A monster weak against Ice isn't always weak against Water, and vice versa. That's why I mentioned it.

I voted fire... I like the look of fire spells, and they've always been my basic offensive magic.
Flare use to be a fire spell, and even when it's non-elemental, it looks fire.

Strong second goes to ice.

OK, I think I've finally figured out part of the conflict here. I should have put down useable black magic spells when I posted this topic. My bad. Anyway, it's up there now, and hopefully this will clear part of this up.

You're right, there is a water-element, but only in Blue magic spells.

I liked the Ice spells the most in FF6 (especially Ice 3, it's all chunky). Overall, the spells in FF6 were very well done.

I usually love Water spells, but true, there are none on the Black Magic list. Don't forget, guys, that Water does exist in Blue Magic and in the summoning of Bismarck. Also W. Wind is a purely %based attack although it sounds weird, but in FF7 White Wind was a curative spell that would do damage to enemies weak to Holy, otherwise it increases anyone's HP by that of the caster, and there it had nothing to do with the Wind element either.

It's alright! happy.gif

Oh, and I can admit I made a mistake too. I'm sorry for mentioning "Darkness" and "Gravity", I messed FFVI up with FFVII. blush.gif

But anyway, it's a pity there is no black magic water attack in FFVI. Yeah, Bismarck and all that, but I want to cast "Water, Water 2 and Water3" on the enemies as well! Stupid Square! dry.gif

Come to think of it, I don't think any Final Fantasy has had Water 1, 2, and 3, except Final Fantasy 10, and that's only because the central theme of FF10 was water.

There are probably others, but CT, FF8 and FFTA all have basic water and ice magic in them. Edit: misread the last post a bit. Out of these three only CT has multipule levels.

By the way, while one cannott (directly) see what elemental each spell is in FF6, you can check your equipment by pressing A twice (I think) while in the item list. Check your flame shields and you will see it is weak to water but is immune to ice and absorbs fire.
