...In under five months!
According to a press release today from Sony, 40 million total Playstation 2 consoles have been sold worldwide. Naturally, the United States has seen the most, with nearly eighteen of those forty million units. Let's look at that from another angle, shall we? There are rougly a quarter-billion people in the United States right now. Eighteen million of them have a PS2. This is a taste over seven percent of the population as a whole - a staggering number for a video game console, especially one that is so young as the PS2 still is. With ten million pieces moved in under half a year, it appears that the PS2 is just now hitting its stride in a way that the PSX started to do soon after the release of FF7. It seems more than feasable to believe that the PS2 could overtake the NES as the largest-selling console ever in a few years. Just because they're in the U.S., doesn't mean they've been sold to consumers.

That's pretty crazy. Makes me feel weird not having one!

Yes, unless someone rushes the next generation of video game systems into the market too soon, killing the momentum. Actually, I agree with Rubes. As much as the PS2 might sell, remember that not as many people had video game systems as they do today. Everyone has them nowadays. NES is still king.

Eh, I don't know that I agree with that... the PS2 was in development long before it released, and the more complex the consoles get, the longer it is going to take to develop them. I don't think it's overconfidence so much as it is trying to maintain a jump on the competition. I would be surprised to see PS3 within the next three years, myself, but what do I know? -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |
