It's a fantastis anime series
I'm looking at 'Jungle wa' for a project and I'm trying to get peoples opinions on the relationships between the 3 main characters (Hale, Guu and Weda). If any one has seen this anime it would be a great help to hear your views, particularly if they relate to this anime in japanse culture and gender stereotypes. For example: Weda does many masculine activities (drinking and hunting etc) yet she still comes across as very feminine whilw Hale does a lot of chores and still comes across as masculine. Any thoughts as to how? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease help I've been to loads of forums and hardly anyone replies :S |

Sorry, can't help you... my good friend raves about this series but she's not available for comment right now. "Jungle wa.." isn't a terribly popular series, if you take my meaning. But I would suggest you do research on gender roles and stereotypes in Japanese culture first, and then apply the research to the anime. Another point you might want to consider is Western and Japanese ideas of what is masculine and feminine - I wouldn't say that drinking speaks to masculinity or femininity so much as morality or social depravity. Try JSTOR for academic articles or "Learning to Bow" by Bruce Feiler for an overview on Japanese society and Japanese middle schools in particular (since I think the main characters of "Jungle wa..." are teenagers?)

Thank you for your response. I get you mean about it being not very 'popular', not many people have heard of it. The project I'm doing is more speculative than thorough research but your suggestions were helpful.
How about your view on how magical worlds in anime can help to get across serious issues or to convey charaters feelings and relationships (and humanity in general)? Any comments welcome. ![]() |
